The reason its easier is your shotgun's have an AOE blast effect (each pellet has a small explosion), you have that damned assault rifle, and the minigun is insane, as well as the plasma rifle.

Nightmare mode is cheap. It was never supposed to be balanced.

You need to reload your shotgun. Same for the assault rifle. The mini-gun has a BIG recoil and the ammo goes down fast. Primary shot of the plasma can damage you, secondary shot is powerful but it sucks your ammo in 1-2 seconds.

What? You are invulnerable but you can't do anything, not even move. You can just watch the fatality. And then enemies can mob you.


I mean, really, Brutal Doom IS harder. I can finish some vanilla Doom maps without losing 1 HP, but it's hard as fuck to NOT lose HP in Brutal Doom.

Duke's Devastators put out the most DPS over time with consistently high damage at a consistent rate.
While Parias has the advantage of not aiming, they're useless against anything high-tier, and Ranger's quad damage only is temporary (not to mention his rockets are pretty slow to fire).

Duke's got the "Crowd Control" role for a reason.

same with laz, though i play with classic laz. some dudes tell me new laz is op as fuck, so don't expect it to be 2gud for long before it gets nerf

spear of destiny is great for "get the fuck outta my face", but you can't use it for anything longer than you can piss at and has THE second worst rate of fire out of any other weaps, first place going to wmc

quad and tome make everything stupid powerful, with quad focusing on sheer power and tome making you a tank
i prefer tome because i like knowing i can take damage and breathe easy for a bit

That would be a good chunk of people here as well. I've finished HR 1 and 2, AV, Scythe 1 and 2 and a bunch of others I cant remember now. Nobles in cramped spaces can be a challenge, large groups of monsters with slower projectiles and conservative health placement can also be a challenge.

Doom is pretty easy overall once you figure out how to dodge projectiles, then you've basically erased the threat of the good majority of enemies. So it's up to things like map design or trap placement to really throw a wrench in things.

Played Blake Stone awhile ago and got wrecked basically all the time thanks to infinite plasma aliens, hitscan everywhere and no armor to shield your health. I love me some nostalgia but dying all the time got infuriating pretty quickly.

Playing RGA2 all the time made me used to the monsters feigning death and having different attacks, it's surprising how slow stock Doom II projectiles really are.

Also since there is a lot of usage of keyboard and mouse it's easier to be much more agile while staying on target. For example, try e2m8 with just a keyboard.

I remember mucking about in DECORATE with many monsters from Realm667 in a little arena I made to try them out in. It's great fun.

When you try them yourself just warp to map 32, it's a nice arena to easily test capabilities without worrying so much about dying.

That had some fun bosses that don't come up very often.

The reason Boom can run nuts and others can't has nothing to do with map architecture or detail and everything to do with how efficient it is at handling monster AI.

In the beginning the first cacoawards aka the 100 best levels (10 years ago now) were chosen basically by two guys named Linguica and Cyb. Linguica was the original Doomworld admin/webmaster and Cyb was one of his mates from the old #doom clique. He also made some wads or something, I don't know I never played them, they were for ZDoom.

After that another guy from the #doom clique named Scuba Steve took it over. He was a newschool freak and highly favoured ZDoom wads so i never agreed with any of his choices, but oh well. after a few years he began first delegating reviews to others then eventually gave up the job entirely.

After that a well-known doomworld troll named Hobbes (aka "John Smith", after his original account was banned) from a clique called #dmclub somehow managed to take it over. Hobbes wrote the thing with the help of a few other people from Doomworld, I think Janitor aka Patrick was one.

There was one year when the awards were done very haphazardly, with about 6 different people each asked to choose one wad, it was very uneven as they all had completely different tastes.

Hobbes was in control right up until last year when he did a runner a few days before the awards were due, which was why last year's was late. At the last minute some guys named Xaser, Alfonzo, and someone else who wasn't on the DTWID development team gave DTWID and a bunch of other wads awards.

And here we are now, basically you have that thread where people post nominations and then two or three guys whose opinions you probably don't agree with pick a bunch of wads you think are all right, considering.

What I always did was try to power through Hell's Arena which is usually a good enough test of whether my character is viable enough for later (i.e. had enough luck in earlier stages to survive Hell's Arena).
Make a Shotty-based character because shotguns are aplenty and pretty strong and use your Shotgun to scan areas (hint: fire it in a direction you want to proceed towards; the bullets fly through the whole map and spread, and the game will notify you with a monster howl if you have hit something, allowing you to be prepared in advance).

Also, you don't want to go on ITYTD because you will miss out on certain special levels that have items that can really help you, the BFG. You can strafe projectiles the same way you would in doom by anticipating their attacks and moving to the side, but the successfulness of that depends on your speed (REALLY useful for the cyberdemon). Like >>1261915 suggests, ammo chain is really good because it allows you to only use 1 ammo for every burst of a rapid fire weapon. Not only does that practically eliminate reloads, it saves a TON of ammo, so using the plasma rifle on everything is an option. Check the wiki for assemblies you can build and for the layout of special maps.

Mouse look makes circle strafing a zillion times easier, and frankly the AI wasn't designed around dealing with players that can turn on a dime, circle strafe and fire continuously all at once.

Try to do a circle strafe and maintain your aim at a fixed point using only the keyboard. It's very hard. Also DOOM didn't ship with any mouse controls and they were retroactively added - and even then they weren't used to mouse look. Mousing left and right strafed, and mousing forwards and backwards moved you in those directions.

If you want to play with mouselook, feel free, but you can't really claim you've beaten it legitimately if you do. You've modded the difficulty by allowing your character greater access of movement. I understand it's frustrating and feels wrong to you, but that was how it was. Some people want to re-experience that same tension and difficulty. If you don't find it fun, don't play it that way.

Yeah but you have to make sure you're not rushing products either.

Games that ship poorly are reviewed based on what comes out first and if patches can later fix these issues (patches released within a month or two) the damage is already done.
I dont even get games on launch now because they *always* ship with really stupid bugs that are very hard to look past.

Also, since I heard that Doom 4 was considered too much like COD, I'm glad it got scrapped instead of rushed to release.
