My scariest retro moment was like this: It was a Windows '96-'98 game about eating healthy. One in a million educational computer games, right? There was a special junk food mountain or cave on the map. In it there was a floating, sinister face on a black background. I don't remember what it said, but it sure fulfilled the idea of scaring kids out of eating too many sweets.

I've been trying to remember the name of the game for years to no avail. Occasionally I'll google it, but I guess I don't have the right keywords. Anybody remember this?

I'm partial to NES version myself but I'm not sure whether or not it's the best one. However is the only version to have a full soundtrack.

Speaking of Uninvited and Shadowgate anyone else love the death descriptions in them? Just thinking about these games while drinking a nice cup of coffee here I can literally see the following text coming up:
>The liquid in the warm cup you are holding has a pleasant odor.
>You decide to take a sip.
>The liquid you drank was hotter than you imagined and quickly dissolves your mouth, throat and internal organs!

Posting on a phone sucks so no image but when I was 4 Dragon Quest one came here and I enjoyed it (my mom helped me through the game). And so one year later 2 came out and as soon as I got into my first battle I nearly screamed. That black background with some pretty weird looking creatures scared the fuck out of my 5 year old self.

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.
It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).
You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.
The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.
Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.
tl;dr: if you believe hipsters exist, you are a plebeian.

This entire level, and the boss. A lot of stuff in this game weirded me out as a kid, I couldn't shut the Genesis off fast enough the first time I died. The fortune teller's theme was creepy, the giant hole and appearance of the cyclone were unsettling, Leviathan's palace felt disturbingly isolated, and the final boss gauntlet was just weird.

After playing the GBC version on a emulator for a while I can say it's pretty much the same as the NES version and the only real difference I found is that the torches lasts much, much longer in the GBC version. Whoever I also found out the hard way that if you actually let one ran out, get a game over and then continue you can actually be permanently fucked if you don't have any torches in your inventory and start from a room that doesn't have one available as your torch goes out after just one action. In the NES version torches wear out at a much quicker rate but after a game over they also start out about halfway full giving you lots of time to fuck around making the whole point of having torches in your inventory pretty pointless to begin with.

While I haven't played it myself but I have heard that the PC version of Shadowgate includes one extra "goblin room" but apparently it doesn't really add anything to the game. Finally here is a link to the hardcore gaming article about Shadowgate which may have more information about the different versions of it:
