>PAL version of FFIX

Worthless, might as well put it into the bin. Seriously the PAL conversion on this game is disgusting.

This being said some hipster might buy it because he wants to play the "authentic console experience" in all its 50hz glory, I mean, shittiness, and the price will slightly vary depending on what language the game is in.

its as worthless as this thread

>> No.1249518

I don't know what the PAL market is like. But the case is cracked and some people are finicky about that. Although a cracked case doesn't mean the discs are in bad shape. Personally, all I care about are discs/carts that are in good shape and good working order. A good case and an included manual is a bonus but not a necessity. For some people it is though.

In the US the GH version is going for about $14.99 new on Amazon. So unless the game is scarce or highly sought after in your country I can't see it being all that valuable.

Seconding these but since I'm an autistic piece of shit I actually went and looked up the prices of FFIX on local online auction site and got this:

http://www.huuto.net/hakutulos?words=Final+Fantasy+IX&search-button=Hae
People want 40€ on average for this? That's WAY too much but thankfully only 1 retard is actually buying at those prizes.

OP, I don't know where you are from or what condition your copy of FFIX is but I'd say 10€ is about right.

This thread is now about bad PAL conversations.

Pic related, Final Fantasy X has unusually huge black bars in top and bottom of the screen. The small white bar is the top of in-game screen and the bottom part is where the blue stuff ends. Now slightly squished screen with small black bars at top and bottom were common in most PAL conversions but in FFX they took 25% of the screen.

SMB1 on NES runs about 9% faster in the PAL version

SMB3 and Blue Shadow on NES runs at correct speed too

That's the only 'good' PAL conversions I know But the aspect ratio is still fucked.

I was aware of Blue Shadow running at correct speed but I didn't know about SMB1 one.

Anyway
>be a video game collector having shitloads of NES games
>have both US and PAL NESes
>when playing on the PAL one aspect ratio is fucked in all games and speed on my US games is fucked
>when playing on US one speed on my PAL games is fucked
>minor graphical errors in some games when played on "wrong" NES for example when playing Final Fantasy on PAL NES you can only see the first two rows of text in dialogue boxes so no Garland knocking you down

Not a big deal but still annoying... I wish someone will eventually come up with 50/60Hz switch for the NES since there is one for most retro systems but since NES games are programmed in ASM 6502 and are completely hardware dependent I guess it's a pipe dream to begin with.

For PAL exclusives and for SMB1 (which I fine a lot more fun than the original due to the extra speed) I use a PAL nes. For everything else I use a famicom 2 with original NES pads (i like them better), an NES to FAMICOM converter for US games and I also have an Everdrive. That way I can play everything.

Back to >>1251449 >>1251453
I seem to recall that on PSX, Crash Bandicoot 2 and Crash Team Racing ran at correct speed (though don't take my word for truth) but not CB3.

PAL gamer here, the copy of FFX I used to have looked nothing like that. You must have your TV set on widescreen mode or something. I can put in a old PAL game with borders and stick my old CRT on 16:9 mode and get a squished screen just like that with 50% of the screen space wasted but it's not the fault of the game, it's because I pressed some buttons that would never usually be pressed.

The game itself has normal small borders, which I agree is pretty pitiful for a 2002 release.

>> No.1253432

I remember their excuse for the PAL version being so bad was because the disc didn't have room for FMV encoded for 25fps and 30fps.

Doesn't excuse the horrible borders though does it?

Maybe he's trying to play in PAL60 mode? Did that exist on the system? I'm not experienced with this but I've heard that some TVs will take a 60hz signal but display with very bad geometry.

I don't know why but FFX really does look like that on my TV, I have all possible settings on 4:3/fullscreen and FFX is still the only game with XBOX HUGE borders in it. In fact I have recently been replaying some early PS2 titles on that exact same TV and they have little to no borders in them so this "feature" seems to be unique to FFX but to be fair maybe the rest of game isn't as bad as the title screen is. It has been years since I played it and took that picture.

Speaking of early PS2 titles and PAL conversations I guess the European Extreme difficulty settings in PAL versions of MGS games should be mentioned even if it isn't /vr/.

FFX was quite notorious for having such awful 50hz conversion. Everybody was pissed on its release especially considering that Sega had started his "everything 60hz compatible" policy and people were getting used to it.

Anybody living in PAL territory and who read just a little about games online or in magazines should remember that aobut FFX's release

I do remember that, but i also remember how i was all like "what? what are they talking about? i see no problem here" cuz I, just like>>1253416 and all the people i knew who had FFX at the time of it's release, never had such a problem with it...not saying the issue wasn't real or anything, just that i've never seen it happen with my eyes-

Your TV is definitely switched to 16:9 mode there - the white bar at the top is a dead giveaway. This usually happens with PlayStation RGB SCART cables because TVs with widescreen switching expect 5-8V for 16:9 or 9-12V for 4:3 on pin 8, and the console's Multi A/V out only outputs +5V so this is usually connected to pin 8 resulting in what you see.

It looks like a Philips TV? There should be a button on the remote for changing between 4:3/16:9, or pressing up/down should also change it.

>>1251652
The problem with the NES is not just the programming, it's the CPU and PPU use different clocks and timing depending on the video standard, and this can't be changed without replacing the CPU, PPU and crystals in the console. I think most of the problem exists because the PPU in the NES outputs composite video directly, whereas most other consoles output RGB and composite video is encoded by a separate chip. I believe some games made by European devs (e.g. Codemasters and Rare) were programmed to detect the console and play at correct speeds in PAL and NTSC systems with the same ROM.

After reading this thread and doing a quick research session I'm stunned about the sheer shittiness of PAL conversations.

First of all here is an comparison video about Sonic 1 being played at 50Hz and 60Hz:
http://youtu.be/DYdHUZlb7qs
The difference really was/is this big?

Next I saw various internet pages claim that Square tried to pass the god-awful PAL version of FFX as a “special widescreen edition” back in day. Can anyone here confirm this?

Bad PAL conversions still seems to be out there on Wii Virtual Console, NoE figured that they wouldn't need to modify the European VC ROMs to run in full-screen and at a proper speed. Emulators have been able to do this for years, and yet the ones responsible for it at Nintendo think that we WANT to play the inferior versions of the games we got back in the 80s and 90s. At least, that's their official explanation for doing it that way.

Finally the worst part is that even back in the 90s we paid MORE for shittier version of the games since we didn't know any better.
Pic more than related after thinking about all shit we went trough.
