Not him, but the only thing that's "unique" about Mother is the setting. Gameplaywise it's as much a DQ ripoff as possible.

Pic unrelated to Mother, but related to thread

Yeah but the setting is what makes the game. I will totally agree that the gameplay is not ambitious at all but the universe is beyond ambitious for an NES RPG.
I'm a little biased about this game though. It totally made me cry. I wont even call them manly tears.

Not to sound like an insensitive asshole but I seriously can't think of anything more cry-worthy in Mother (well the entire series, actually) than in any other "sad scene" in other media.

Nah you don't sound insensitive. We are talking about video games here.
It's all about your own emotional investment. When I played Mother 1 I got so into I just played it day in and day out. I would talk to every NPC and examine every bit of text to try to make sense of the game, and by the end when you have a very clear image of what's happening the impact of the dialogue really hits home. If you don't dig the game then they probably wouldn't hit you as hard.
It's a bit of a cop out response but really it just comes down to "I like it more than you, so I got sadder at that scene than you did". But I can see how the game wouldn't appeal to someone. Not everything is for everyone.
I just get very impulsively offended whenever someone first says they don't like the game. I guess I just need a moment to calm down and go "Hey, everyone has opinions".

I always liked that the Mother series used miniatures for character design assets. Anybody know any other games that did this?

Doom -- a lot of the monster sprites are photos of miniratures, as well as several weapon sprites being photos if various toy guns

came in to post this, you're mah nigga.

Lagrange Point looks interesting for being a purely space RPG by Konami (unlike, say, PS or SO, which merge high fantasy with sci-fi), but I cannot understand any of it because it's all Nipponese.

Love them too, I wish there were more of these banpresto figures, we know the originals exist as they were exposed on that Mother 1+2 event back in 2003 in Japan... man, all dem figures.

Metal Max series

Open ended JRPG series that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. Doesn't take itself seriously in the least. The only two games in English are Metal Max Returns and the not retro Metal Saga. Customizing and driving tanks into battle is a big part of the games. Just beware that it's not for everyone.
