Is it me or is Master Levels mostly shit?

Like, it has a couple of decent levels, but most of them are just meh. And the idea of 20 individual level wads in a commercial release is just stupid. I mean Final Doom may have been a glorified expansion aswell, but at least it offered two 32 level megawads that allowed for progressive play.

I've been working on an alien race for a good long while that I'd really like to make into a monster wad, but there's a whole ton of work to be done in just creating the sprites alone, and I've been too busy with Samsara to really do much more than the former humans.
Still, I'd really like to turn this into a full-fledged monster thing someday.

Two things have an effect on spread with shotguns.
The load, and if it has a choke. Barrel length tends to have near immeasurable effect on shot pattern, though it will affect the velocity of the shot.

Unless you saw the barrel down to like 2-3 inches and load it with birdshot, it's probably not going to spread much. The Supershotgun in Doom 2 should reasonably not have been spreading out much before at least 50 yards. The original shotgun, while it had a strange horizontal spread, it could actually reach about 60 yards or so before becoming totally inaccurate.

Point is, real shotguns can reach across a courtyard in real life before the shot-pattern spreads out, and I'm tired of seeing them depicted as blunderbusses in vidya.

Well I know shotguns have actual range in real life, but did not know that the barrel had minimal impact.

For Doom the spread on the super shotgun was put in there for balancing reasons.

If you ever play a mod with an automatic shotgun or even a shotgun that has reasonable power and a tight spread it tends to dominate due to how damage is calculated.

Yeah, you really need to cut down the barrel seriously short to get the kind of spread they have in vidya. Of course, you could probably achieve that effect with some sort of strange muzzle-device (after all, the Germans did field that "Krummlauf" device, which would angle shots around the corner).

Duke Nukem 3D also portrayed the the shotgun decently, it had a little bit of a horizontal shape to it's spread like the shotgun in Doom, but it could still hit an Octobrain with most of the pellets across a courtyard.

If I recall correct, it was a Winchester 1300 with TacStar grips and a heatshield on the barrel. It was held left-handed when they photographed it, and then mirrored it, so that the ejection port was on the other side (the wrong side).

Really, some day, I'd like to get a Winchester 1300 and kit it out with TacStar parts, then, I'm going to have an engraver put the logo on the receiver. Because I'm a big big nerd.

The Cleric has the weakest starting weapon and strongest, but most costly, final weapon. He's mostly balanced around the fact that Wraithverge is op as fuck, making his first three weapons, in terms of raw power, the weakest compared to the others' equivalents.

The Fighter is strong all day, every day. His only real downside is that his best weapon, Timon's Axe, is melee range only.

The Mage's starting weapon is by far the most useful weapon after the Cleric's final. His other weapons/spells are strong under certain circumstances, like Frost Shards in melee and in tight quarters, or Arc of Death at mid-long range in open areas. His downsides are that he has the slowest movement speed and the highest costing weapons.

Tom Hall never completed the Doom Bible. Tom Hall never got beyond one or two levels in the Doom Bible. Because, outside of episode 1 (which has well fleshed out details for damn near everything in the scenario) I could literally just sprite replace the pistol with the alpha rifle, DECORATE an unmaker, and then literally drop in already made maps and it would still technically follow hall's design spec.

For example:
Episode 2: Lost in Hell.
Based on Hall's description, this is literally Doom Episode 3 connected together with a hub.

Episode 3: Knee deep in the dead
I could literally throw in any doom map with a tech theme, throw in a final level where there's an "attack cruiser" for me to commandeer, and it would pass muster for Hall's description. Seriously, I could snip random levels out of BTSX or UAC Ultra, stitch them together as a long, snakey, persistent hub-world, and it would meet the description given.

Episode 4: Armed Assault
You could literally get away with dropping some of the plutonia experiment's maps in, adding the unmaker, and then stitch the maps together into a huge persistant hub.

Episode 5: Base instinct
Any mapset that's "corrupted tech base" themed could be inserted here, stitched together, and the last couple maps modded to add the unmaker and Hall's "nuke hell" scenario.

Episode 6: The Final Gate
You would actually have to care with this episode, because Hall's description literally gives a combination of the plot's of Halo and Doom 64, which means there isn't something pre-fab you can "robotech" into the role.
Still, other than it being a run through a tech-base with IDFA weapons and friendly AI assistance, you have plenty of creative liberty.

I guess my point is: the doom bible is so damn vague sometimes that you could literally just drop shit that people've already made into it, tie them together as one long-ass hub, and still technically meet the "letter of the law" that is the doom bible. It's a half-finished design doc, thus it would be less of a "tom hall's doom" than it would be "just another megawad"

The best way I can describe the gameplay is Rage's gun mechanics with lots of low tier enemies to mow down.

From what I can remember there were five weapons slots with two different weapons in every slot. Guns had sights but it's not like they were required to get a better shot, they seemed to be more for aesthetics.

Yes, there was a regular shotgun and a double barreled shotgun. Neither of them really stood out as they were just your typical black futuristic representation of a shotgun. The regular shotgun reminded me of the one from the Doom 3 alpha in its styling and the double barreled shotgun was just kind of a black double barreled shotgun without any standout features.

Both of them sounded beefy and were fun to fire though. They have pretty narrow spread so they operated kind of like the ones in the old doom games.

They were all pretty generic but they were all satisfying to fire. The rocket launcher had this rotating barrel thing that slowly rolled and clinked every time you made a shot instead of reloading. I think you reloaded like every five shots and reloading times were pretty fast

Anyone play complex doom?

I feel a little pleby playing it cause its just a giant randomizer with a ton of realm monsters and stuff but I actually think its kinda fun, like a more interesting hard-doom. I'll admit it has some bullshit hitscan replacement enemies though.

Too bad I can't get the sounds to work right in GZDoom, can't get used to zandy's terrible lighting.

It helps when you use a quality soundfont with that MIDI to make it sound less low-quality.

Go git BASSMIDI and use that with the SoundCanvas-55 emulation soundfont. An SC-55MkII is what Bobby composed the Doom soundtrack on.

You'll need landmarks. Just large changes in topology, like smaller falls poking out of the main walls. Maybe blood coming from the center of the ceiling. Otherwise everything is going to look the same, and that's how you navigate.

If you don't want to do that, then I'd make every intersection different. Like have a different number of hallways in each one, or make one a circle shape, and one a triangle, or something. Or both.

I can't really fathom why you're trying to make a map homogenous but easily navigable. Weird goal.

I used to use that. Timidity fucked up the SC-55 soundfont and I learned in the end that it's actually pretty buggy when dealing with soundfonts

So someone told me to use BASSMIDI and it's much simpler to use. It's simply a midi driver to select ingame and has a config utility.
