/vr/ - Retro Games

I think a lot of people would jump to Mario or Mega Man or something. But really, most people are familiar with those characters, regardless of their interest in retro games.

It would have to be someone who appeals exclusively to retro gamers. Slightly obscure, but not unrecognizable by those who are really into old games.

Okay, I have to say that I like all the characters mentioned so far, but I would be proud to have Doom Guy as the official mascot of /vr/.

I think it would be impossible for the crowd here to agree on a character. Anything immediately recognizable would be 2casual4most of /vr/, and the obscure stuff would obviously not be very representative of a significant percentage of the board's tastes.

In all honesty, I'm gonna say Pac-Man is probably the most reasonable. Everybody knows Pac-Man, and I don't think anyone would ever say that Pac-Man represents anything bad about video games. I know people who were born in the 50s who never played a home video game, and they still get all starry-eyed over memories of the cocktail Pac-Man cabinet at the local pizza shop in college.

See, that's kind of the problem though. Pac Man is so well known that someone who has never played a video game could easily recognize him. I think part of what makes /vr/ so awesome is that we don't just appreciate retro games that were popular, but also the little known games that rarely get any love. A mascot for /vr/ should represent our fondness for old video games, not just being from an old video game.

I'm gonna have to side with Cranky Kong on this one. His whole gimmick is that he hates everything new and continues to sing praises for the classics. He is everything we stand for here on /vr/

Luigi also had basically no personality in games made before 2000. Many main characters just didn't have personalities before 2000, which is why those who did (Caleb, Cranky, Q*Bert) are so firmly placed in our minds.

Why is it that the enemy is always more interesting than the guy you can play? We knew all about Bowser's family and each Koopa Kid had at least something resembling a personality, but Mario was still a huge blank.

I'm really liking this idea of Cranky Kong. He's a nice tongue-in-cheek mascot with some great lines in his own games talking about older games. He's great without being too try hard or just too specific (Mario).

Some guys were making a game called Project Hate Machine, which was meant to be a beat'em up with playable board-tans. There's a gif somewhere of /v/ doing a string of punches and several threads were made for ideas, like /vr/ having Power Glove attacks.

Knowing projects on 4chan in general, I wouldn't be surprised if nothing ever comes up in the end. Hell, I haven't even heard from /vr/'s Mega Man fangame in a while.
