Everywhere i look says that the gameboy color cannot be backlit, but nobody has posted any proof in the form of photos to show that it doesnt work.

Can anyone actually explain why it won't work?

LCDs have to be designed to be backlit, it's not just something that can be tacked onto any LCD screen.

can you do a front light mod on the GBC? I thought you could take the screen from a certain SP and use that

the GBC uses a simple z80 processor with custom firmware by nintendo, the GB boy just uses pirated firmware. the hardware is 'compatible'
i.e. not emulated.

Can someone show me proof of this?
I only recently found out that there are 2 types of SP, myself owning the version that is apparently "shit" though I never had any fault with how it was lit at all.

GBB Colour (GBC shape) was discontinued but you can still buy the GBASP-shaped clone with the same screen and specs. Aliexpress or Taobao should have them in stock.

It says AGS 001 on mine though not AGS 101. Bright as fuck.

I can't stand GBC on the AGS-101. The backlit brightness is nice and all but the color saturation and refresh rate harm it. Maybe I'm just too much of a purist, but this is /vr/.

I prefer the proper colors on the original GBC screen; most games were made with it in mind (hence why games released late in the GBC's life have GBA-detection modes that change to duller palettes to compensate). The GBA oversaturates the colors and when paired with the crazy-bright backlight on the 101 it's eye-searingly vibrant. Did I mention the 101's awful refresh rate? It's not PSP-1000 bad but it's still very noticeable. Good luck playing fast-paced sidescrollers on it.

I personally prefer modded front-lit GBC to backlit AGS-101. It's dimmer, but a better GBC experience.

Probably swapped out the shell. I did the same thing with mine; My beloved Famicom-styled import SP's screen broke because my idiot friend sat on it, and then I got a scratched-up blue AGS-101 for free from a to-be-trashed demo station at a store. Swapped the 101 screen into the shell to get pic related. I'm still not a fan of the refresh rate, but GBA games look great and the shell looks great.

My nigga. The GB Boy is superior to the GB Colour in almost every way, in my opinion. The only real downside is the D-Pad.

>stretched aspect ratio
>fuzzy, not pixel-perfect image
>screen flickers in some games with heavy scrolling (Pokemon)
>sound chip is severely lacking, pitch is off, tons of effects simply do not work including basic ones like vibrato (Pokemon cries are silent)
>link cable port is only capable of sending information, not receiving, which renders multiplayer unusable
>CPU is clocked slower, so games run slightly slower

Yeah, no. It's a shitty chinese knockoff and it should be treated as such. Literally its only upside is the bright screen. That's it. Everything else about its screen is shitty; it's clearly not built for GBC games. Its compatibility is shit since some major games have issues (like Pokemon). Sound is shit. It's just shit. The 101 SP is far superior. The GB Boy should really only be recommended as a cheap method of having a bright GBC screen if you're really desperate and unable to shell out for a 101.
