Welcome to the new and improved /vr/ Gauntlet!

Visit the following link to begin the challenge: http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator: http://s3kr.it/systems/

Choose ANY system you want and complete the game within the week if possible.

Here is a comprehensive link of where to find emulators: http://pastebin.com/GCVycMKw

Post screenshots, videos, high score results and others.

If any anon posts a high score of a certain game and the Gauntlet gives you the same game, aim to beat the score for good measure.

Re-rolls are allowed on the following conditions:

>The game is too full of bugs to be playable
>It is not possible to emulate said game
>The game requires cheats or hacks to complete

Let the games begin!

I wasn't given a default, so Bimmy it is.

Alright, so I'm apparently a scrub knight, and everyone is either trying to push me out the door to go fight, or they're telling me how much of a scrub I am, which makes the former camp seem like they want to send me out on a suicide mission.

There are a bunch of centaur everywhere but nobody has made any comment on it.

I talk to the king, and...

Shit, I think I am being put on a suicide mission. There are forces about to invade the city, and they can't send their knights out without them being noticed, probably because all of them are centaurs. So they want to send me.

Well, at least from what I understand I get troops. I have a Knight, a Mage, an Archer, some guy whose text I skipped over by accident (his name is Luke), and my apparent friend Bimmy, to form a party of six.

Anyway, the town is badly hurt, but the soldiers there managed to fight off the Darkness for now.

A crazy old man that I assumed was a random NPC before just joined my team after the attack.

The Darknes killed the head of the army and killed the King, who told us to go to another town to send a message to his daughter.

Well, I went to a town, found out that the bad guys bought all the boats the town had (why would you sell it to them?), decided to go look for the king's daughter, the town I was approaching ambushed me and almost wiped out my entire party, I managed to slay every last enemy by keeping Bimmy as far away from combat as possible, and they apologized to me because they thought I was with the bad guys.

I found the king's daughter, who took the news of her father's death horribly, but then joined my party.

I got turned into a hen.

Then I snuck past a guy and turned back into a Bimmy.

I went to a dungeon to find an orb, killed some monsters, found a spooky scary skeleton, the king's daughter set it on fire in a fit of rage okay I made that up but I like to give additional personality to party members so I had the king's daughter defeat it herself rather than using the whole party, I got the Orb of Light, and a goddess told me how Bimmy is the greatest hero in the universe and how he'll save the day.

I really, REALLY hate Bimmy.

I need to go to a circus to save the grandson of the one guy in town that has a boat, but I found an interesting detour; Runefaust (the bad guy forces) put up a play of them defeating the Shining Force, with production quality that rivals the Ember Island Players. The play in its entirety I added to the image for your amusement.

In a twist NOBODY expected, the circus tent is full of evil creatures!

Defeated them, the fortuneteller I met earlier turned out to be evil, and when I went to get my new boat, she fucking burned it, making the hour of playtime a complete waste.

Thanks, Bimmy. For the great hero, you sure couldn't stop a single person burn down a ship when they're right in front of you.

Now, I'm at... I have no fucking clue. This place is fucked up. I was told to look for someone, and I'm walking around here, and everyone is acting like they're zombies, and the pastor wouldn't tell me anything. I found the guy I was looking for, he screamed "It's a trap!" and the pastor appeared, turning into a commander of Runefaust and surrounding me with zombies. This seems like a simple fight except OH SHIT THE GUY I CAN'T LET DIE IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD SURROUNDED BY MONSTERS. I have to get my party to surround him like a meat shield and fend off his attackers.

Bimmy's presence is feeling less like having a protagonist and more like every battle being an escort mission. I normally just leave him at the starting point (unless he needs to level up to match the rest of the troops), but here there's clearly no choice.

That was harder than it needed to be.

Every enemy was of the undead type, which means they're weak to Blaze. I have two mages that know Blaze, but I forgot to revive the one that died in the previous battle, mainly because the friar wouldn't talk to me. I was in such a rush to protect my escort/protagonist that I blocked his path with the nearest party member, which was my other mage. I killed a few enemies with her, but she died early on in the match, so I had to tough it out the rest of the match using only physical attacks, which are weak against the undead. I made it to the end without my escort/protagonist getting hit more than once, and it was explained that the friar had been possessed.

That doesn't explain all the people walking around like zombies, who suddenly disappeared after the fight.

Anyway, I have two awesome birdmen on my team now, and Chapter 2 is over. I have more characters than my party can hold, so I'm going to have to think about what arrangement I want on my team.

Resuming.

I fought a battle and saved a quarry full of slaves. The birdmen are rather awesome. I could just go to the enemies with them as scouts, attack until their HP is low, send them back to the healers, and have the rest of the troops finish off the enemies.

>> No.1231568

>>1231450
Well damn, I just got wasted.

There was a battle to get to a bridge, which I won rather easily, but after that was a second battle. Your party regains all HP and MP between battles and nobody died, so the consecutive battles isn't a problem, but this is the first battle that had a severe obstacle to it.

There was a giant laser cannon that counted down and fired after so many turns, hitting all troops (friend and foe) in a certain longitudinal range. This giant cannon is placed at the end of an incredibly long, narrow walkway, with a couple crevices to hide, but there are enemies in said crevices. You had to hide in the crevices and wait for it to fire, and because of their size, only 3-4 troops could go forth.

I lost a third of my troops by misestimating the range of the cannon, so I escaped from battle to go revive them.

I feel like I need a break even though I can't due to the Gauntlet time limit. This game is starting to get overwhelming. I've never played a tactical RPG before, and having 12 characters to work around and manage health and MP and placement, is just hard for me.

And here's how things are now.

Initially I made a truce with the Lyle (blue union) but they broke that so I took 1-2-6 from them. Suddenly they were my friends again, but they wanted to defect but they've attempted to fight the bottom guys and 10 defected to them (I'm terrible with names). I'm going to leave them for now and fight them later - because I'm going to have to eventually.

The family that was at 13-14, when defeated, joined me which was handy. The guys at 24-27 and 26-25 both defected, I think.

The guys at 8 aren't doing anything.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get this done by Monday, so I might drop out and just continue playing this because it's quite enjoyable.

Shame the music is pretty off-putting (had to mute it).

The evil guys succeeded in taking back #10, then did a nice trick of attempting to invade #7 with #9, failing and then attacking with #10 since #7 was weak. So the Lyles joined me, which is great because some of them have some very good stats.

Though I discovered I didn't have two Plesiosauruses since they only stay for one battle. I like to think it's the same one just being indecisive because he's left twice and volunteered three times.

Wily's Capsule is mostly hidden in the darkness, and has the tendency to spawn right above your head apparently, though an easy trap for him; with the Pharaoh's sun above, although it traps you as well since of his energy ball.
Despite that the fight is rather easy, with some nice music to add.

My first gauntlet challenge so far, and completed in only a few hours. Quite an achievement for me in terms of skill; as it usually took me more than two weeks to get through Mega Man 9 on the Wii, and I did not even pass Stage 2 yet.

Despite that I've been practicing the NES games for quite a while, and I'm planning to buy them on the 3DS as well, I'll side with either 5/6 or replace 5/2, perhaps with Oracle of Seasons as well.

With that rounded up however, it's time to tackle the SNES tomorrow.

Fourth boss. IIRC, his name is Carrock. Anyway, all you do is use the magic from a nearby town to reflect his magic back at him. Wizrobes are pretty boring in this game, now that I think about it. Blue wizrobes in the first Zelda were annoying as all hell and some of the strongest enemies in the game, but in Zelda 2 all you do is use magic and they die in one hit (excluding this boss, of course. He takes 5-6).

That's a 1-Up doll. They give you an extra life. This does not stack however, so it's best to save link doll locations and then go find them before going down the long painful road to the great palace.

Not that you need them, it just helps. Kind of weird how the game doesn't just up your max life count permanently for each doll, but hey, Z2 ain't exactly perfect, and furthermore, that might be considered as being too easy by some.

Finally got to playing.

That mission was a bitch. Apparently the cannon only counts down when there's a troop (friend or foe) in front of it, which meant if I wanted my troops to progress, when the cannon was about to fire I had to place a stronger troop in the line of fire and have them take the hit. By doing so I was able to get enough troops to the cannon to kill it before it fired again. I got another centaur troop, I'm going to replace my archer with him because he isn't of any use whatsoever.

And that ends Chapter 3.

At the start of Chapter 4, I meet a general of Runefaust, the kingdom attacking, and he tells me that the Darkness has swayed their king to do the Darkness' bidding. The general disagrees with the Darkness but fights for loyalty to his king, and tells me that if I slay him in battle he wishes for me to free Runefaust from the forces of Darkness.

That sounds like a reasonable wish.

That was an ordeal. I kept my troops in files, with healers in the back and mages in the middle, yet somehow they still killed my mages before their first squadron was taken out.

After the first wave of their troops, the next ones were easier, and by the end we took out the general's support before he could attack.

The general himself went down hard, though. He had the highest HP of any enemy I've faced in this game, and he passively healed 15-20 HP every turn. Even with six troops attacking him (one for each cardinal direction, plus two of my centaurs can attack diagnolly), it took five or six turns to kill him. He wished us luck in defeating the Darkness before his demise, and I'm back in town, which I forgot to mention is entirely on wheels and rolled away before returning.

Yeah it's kinda bullshit. You have to find it by using the hammer in a secluded forest to start clearing the trees from the ground. Under one of the tiles is the village. The only other time you use the hammer is to destroy boulders so unless I missed some villager dialogue telling me about it, I wouldn't have known what to do if not for hitting the button accidentally.
Anyway, I'll continue playing tomorrow. I think I have a good idea of where the next palace is.

I said no, but it was a But Thou Must scenario and I had to spare him. Luckily Darksol killed him for me, and now I'm sailing the high seas on a boat ready to go somewhere else. I'm currently being ransacked by monsters, and haven't gotten a chance to revive slain party members, so this is gonna be interesting. I'm wondering, where would I go if I failed? So how does the NES handle ships blowing stuff up? Not GOOD.

The backgrounds flash on and off screen. Scrolling? What scrolling? Your hitbox is bigger than your ship and it lags a bit when bullets hit you. The enemies all have smaller hitboxes than you. The controls glitch sending you to the middle of the screen if you press DOWN and left or DOWN and right.

You can barely see anything. You randomly disappear behind the background. The background is destroyable in places, so sometimes it destroys the background and not the enemies. Also, the bullets blend into the background at times.

Making it worse: Your gun OVERHEATS. In a SCHMUP. You'll spend half your time dodging while it cools down (amid flashing background that you vanish behind at that).

This. Game. Sucks.

That said, I'm on level 6 now.

Hm, The game's set in World War III.
China has invaded Kazachstan and I have one tank that I control, I aim to red and shoot.

This can go on smoothly I guess.

Set up my attack, moving funds and troops around. Had to beef up #14 as well since #23 suddenly gained a massive army (but that'll be easy to deal with since #15 has a huge army as well.

Here's the guy who defected. Clearly there's something about grumpy men being the best ones in this game.

True.

One thing is that it's easy to do with the gauntlet since I've been playing most of the games, and I often had the ideas of making a youtube channel though a dozen exist.

Eh, I'll do them for the gauntlet.

Can't go wrong with a KOEI game.
Scenario 1, and playing as this guy seeing as how he's the only ruler that doesn't look like a weenie.

Only having a single region will be troublesome, but we'll see.
As advisor we're going with ZORAX THE MIGHTY.

No, no, the battles are fun, it's just the fact that with all of the losing progress I've wasted about nine hours without getting further.

I'm not letting this thing beat me, though, I'm just going to find a Gameshark cheat to auto-win the battles I lost progress on. I don't consider that cheating considering I spent up to half an hour on each battle the right way to win it.

The problem with going under the scenery is you can't see where you are. Sure, you're temporarily invincible, but the scenery is patchy and vanishes suddenly which easily results in death from the bullet you didn't see because it blended into the background or dying because you thought you were somewhere else and an enemy is now on top of you..

>Overheating gun
Did you use turbo controller? I have been. I have also notice some weapons overheat faster than others. The pattern seems to be that the more upgrades you have the faster you overheat the gun. The ship turns red and stops firing when the gun overheats.

The version I'm using says "1989" as the manufacture date. I found it here: http://www.coolrom.com/roms/nes/3810/Star_Soldier.php

just played it, it is pretty complex and long for a GBC game. it is fun but gets repetitive after a while and the unnecessary complexity of the wave system and the terrible menu screens are somewhat annoying. on the bright side, it is still lufia, there's the ancient cave, cheesy romance, submarine and airship.
