Can we take a moment to appreciate how great music for the Genesis was? Games like Earthworm Jim, The Ooze, and Sonic Spinball had music that actually benefited from being on the Genesis, and wouldn't have been as good otherwise. Sure, the snes had great sound, but it was much better at "bright" sounding stuff whereas the Genesis was better at "dark". Any thoughts?

Genesis sound card was pretty shitty, but yeah, it had some good tunes. Probably in spite of that, though, not by virtue of it.

>music that actually benefited from being on the Genesis
Please stop this nonsense, the Genesis was mostly LIMITED by its failure to adopt DSP when not only the arcade industry had embraced it but consoles were catching on too. It had a fast sound chip, but that's about it.

FM synthesis has much potential, but in the wrong hands it rapes your ears. Unlike samples or subtractive synthesis (NES, C64 etc.), it takes quite a bit of skill to make good sounding instruments.

Yeah, no. In 1988 most arcade games were using YM2203/YM2151 and occasionally a PCM chip with a Z80 as a sound mpu. Sound familiar?
The main design flaw was using a serial bank register for streaming PCM data through the Z80.

I actually wasn't aware the Mega Drive launched that early. Still you would never find a game sound like this on it. The SNES could at least make an admirable attempt thanks to its forward-thinking inclusion of DSP. Around 1990 or so or even the late '80s, arcade developers had definitely starting taking advantage of DSP for audio.

I'm a huge fan of the SNES soundchip but what Sega game that stands out for me is Streets Of Rage 2. The sound on that game is amazing , really showed what the megadrive could do

excellent taste

and also, totally agree with you, having this kind of quality on the megadrive would send manufacturing costs through the roof. I'm happy with what we have though. I love how devs always paired the YM2151 up with something like the OKI or a proprietary chip for sound playback because 2151 didn't have any.

But even when it's not pushed to the absolute limit like that video the sound card was really damn good. The issue was devs were just too fucking lazy and usually did half assed conversions of the SNES version making the music sound bad. Most of the really good Genesis music is on the games either developed originally on the console and ported to others or is a Genesis exclusive.
