He is not though. I was heavy into fighters back in the day, specially SF and MK and in my opinion the best was MK3/UMK3/MKT (basically the same game). MK2 and MK4/Gold are okay answers and Shaolin Monks was loads of fun. The rest of the franchise is trash. The 2011 game was a pleasant surprise, very good overall, I keep playing it often with some friends.

I have two friends, one dismisses old games completely out of hand, the other does a 180 and is willing to try anything even though he doesn't like most of them nearly as much as modern games.

The only game the first one would play that's older than the PS4 is Final Fantasy VIII since he nostalgias so hard for it. He's the kind of guy who bought every next gen console at launch despite having only one game for each.

The second guy played SMW and finished it with me last month, played Contra 3 a couple of times, and did the complete treasure portion of KSS with me. I don't think he really had much fun the entire time, he just enjoyed playing with a friend.

I agree that the music in the Tony Haw's games was more well-fitting, but I don't see how players wouldn't know who the artists were. I'm 18 now so I must have been younger than 12 when I was most into Tony Hawk and I knew who pretty much all the artists were in the games. I also think the THPS games were exceptionally good in terms of the soundtracks and not really indicative of the era, they just happened to be great.

For THPS1-2 I couldn't name a single artist until I looked the soundtracks up online around 2007. In THUG however by listing the song in the pause menu I familiarized myself with the soundtrack more quickly but I had still never even heard of half the bands in the game.
And yes the soundtracks are just all around great. I just got THPS4 the other day, actually, and I've never played it before. Is it just as good, do you know?
