A pretty mediocre JRPG with an awesome story that doesn't really start until 30 hours in and will probably require more than one playthrough to fully understand.

Xenogears is one of my favorite games of all time, and the gameplay of it is actually really underrated. But I'm not even going to bother because people will just say I'm wrong and the game is actually shit, etc.

Xenogears has always been a very weird game for me. There are some aspects about it that I absolutely love, but then there are other things that I fucking hate so much.

The mecha design is superb, and the story has some incredibly interesting moments, incredibly well done even. Some of the characters are also pretty great.

But then there's shit like Fei being a total faggot for like the first ten hours of the game and the first third of the game being pretty boring, and the second disc being what it is.

The game has such awesome moments, it's a shame that it's so inconsistent, because holy shit when the game is good it's really good.

Xenogears was one of those games I stuck with and I was glad I did. In had a real bad habit in the psx era of starting RPGs and not finishing them.

You lose freeroam completely. Compared to what control you had before, its kind of jarring.

Plus, disc one is so long that you expect a bit more out of two.

They ran out of money and so the first 5 hours of the 10 hours disc 2 is literally walls of text describing what the party did in cut dungeons, occasionally punctuated by a boss battle.

However, once those 5 hours are over, the remaining 5 hours of the game give you access to the world map again and are awesome.

Basically the budget ran out / got pulled and they had to finish the game ASAP. And it shows.

I really liked Xenogears from what I played. I got the sand submarine and lost my memory card. That was about a year ago and while I haven't played since, I'm pretty confident that I'll come back to it soon and enjoy it just as much.
