It shouldn't be just for contemporary systems, but everything, or at least from the NES and up. The idorts would be in some kind of nirvana/paradise-like area. Key people of the industry need to be in somehow like Reggie, Kaz, Ballmer, Romero, Carmack, Miyamoto, Kojima, Sakurai etc. In-references for each game community like Ridley being too big, Megaman being dead, farting Bianca etc. and of course, huge guts. Lots of decorate and xwe meddling here and there.
seems like this should be it but it looks like way too much effort.

There are heaps of ideas, what were you even looking for?

Were you wanting to just make a map to kill things in or some kind of gameplay WAD?

now here's the deal

One of the ideas people threw two thread earlier was the concept of /v/.wad involved around "rescuing POWs and bringing 'em up back to /vr/"

So the first map consists of getting into the center of the shitstorm to help some comrades, once we're in that base, we must defend it from randomized swarms of consolefags.

Now, here's the deal. Once the invasion ends, PCfags will gather around us, first of all offering themselves to help us and give us enough ammo to manage to get outside that shithole. But then once we (as players) are about to clean the main pathway to the exit, a stress call from our previously rescued friends from the "master race" base telling us to go back because things got nasty in there

>> No.1223118

>>1223113

*we receive a stress call

And also

>because things got nasty in there

the explanation being that there's some cultists gathered around a temple (although I must admit that I'm personally so fucking sick of temples in Doom WADs) trying to offer our friends in sacrifice to "Lord Gaben"

Naturally all dem bustas are infected with the sickness commonly called "de gay"

No, it's my first map. I'm also not really anonymous, I have accounts on zdf and sand that I act retarded with and sometimes post updates about my other project. I learned the stuff in the map by googling stuff and reading the zdoom wiki and bugging people in irc and a LOT of trial and error.

Though it is worth noting that I played zdoom with pwads for years and years before I ever posted anywhere about it or tried making my own maps. Most of the stuff I did in that map I saw elsewhere first or saw something similar elsewhere first. You can also see my mapping skill increase throughout the map; I did detail fixes to the swamp and tunnel to the red key room second to last before release and the secret areas in the yellow key room and the ITS HAPPENING sequence were both the last things completed before release.

I probably would have made a simpler first couple of maps if I hadn't started with a specific idea in mind, but instead just reworked portions of that one as I learned more since it's not like I could release a series of pol maps, I only had one shot at it. It actually started as a simple startan room with a test to see if a happening meter could work and grew from there.

The point of posting this isn't to say "I'm so great because this is my first map" but rather that anyone can do that level of quality (which isn't amazing or anything) right off the bat because I'm nothing special.

Here is the start of a possible enemy for /v/. I didn't make it it's just a.gif I saw on /v/ and saved because it had rotations.

Also, while I don't have a wad yet, I know exactly how to make a fully working Mr. Bones' Wild Ride in zdoom. It will look better with seat and coaster car voxels but those aren't necessary. I could definitely make a Mr. Bones' Wild Ride map portion for whoever ends up making or being in charge of (if it's a map with multiple authors) the /v/.wad

While I do know that the level design in Doom and other old FPS games is superior to modern games, one must remember a key part of the old level design.
There was typically one path through it, not including secrets. You had to find the keycards to progress to certain wings and search for the new cards and so on. But there was only one general path through a level.

So in that way, the corridor shooter cut out some of the foreplay. But is it interesting from a gameplay standpoint? Certainly not.

If you want to make an argument against modern FPS games, do so without making crappy false images to do so. If map design is so bad, why didn't the person who made that image use an actual map like he did on the left?

I'm not making an argument that modern FPS games are good (haven't touched them in years because of this) but if you're going to make an argument that's worth a damn, stick to the facts.

If you make it THAT linear (because unless you're a fucking moron, you know you can have linear and even more linear) the player is moreso just shown stuff as they go along.

Playing other games though means players might miss some areas others will not because they went out to explore on their own. Part of this is what makes some sandbox games so fun, exploring at your own pace.

I completely agree with you, that is definitely an issue. The issues with modern FPS are very numerous. I'm sure this is one of the few things that people from this thread can agree with Total Biscuit about. He's made a few videos about old FPS versus the new style. But I digress.

My main issue is the lack of uniqueness in the guns. Instead of having unique weaponry, many modern FPSes go for many guns that are almost identical. Even though three of Doom's guns were hitscans, they were completely different in their uses and purposes. Four, if you count the SSG.

Yeah, it is what separates Unreal Tournament & Quake 3 games from COD.

In the former 2 you can see the other guy first and they can still win because of so much more maneuverability, "realistic health" is not an issue and the firearms vary widely.

COD is more about seeing the other guy first and not being a complete clutz at aiming.
There *is* strategy involved though if you're actually playing as a team, I'll grand it that.

Though if I want something closer to realism i'll play battlefield or ARMA.

On a side note:
I've got a copypasted reply somewhere of the main diffs between arena shooters and spunkgargleweewee.

>> No.1224948

Agreed that COD and it's ilk take the worst things from video game and real life combat and adds it together. I think the "seeing the other guy first and not being a complete clutz at aiming" thing isn't inherently bad at all, but it doesn't work at all in Deathmatch, it needs proper objective-based gameplay and maps with as many multiple paths and hiding spots as in real life.

>> No.1224954

>>1224948
It's just that COD is not even "realistic" at all. I mean, you regenerate in seconds for fucks sake.

I can respect a firefight in ARMA type games because it's trying very hard to be real so it's a different sort of setup. S.T.A.L.K.E.R too.

COD is not that though, it's just this arcade shit that fucks around in the middle and it's got a really slick coat of paint but it's not how firefights go at all. You want things to look a bit more real try having stanima, inability to bunnyhop and knowing that if you die you'll take ages to respawn and be nowhere near the guy that shot you.

I, for one, approve of using Yahtzee's term "spunkgargleweewee" in future reference to all modern FPS, since they are obviously a completely new genre from the old.
As for realism, in my shooters, I tend toward ARMA. Realism can be a great thing to play with in a game. But brown isn't realism, corridor forests aren't realistic, and neither is regenerating health.
>>1224948
The original COD was a great game for its time. Come at me. But somewhere down the line, it changed for the worse. I don't know where.

I find his personal politics (which he seems to hamfist into things) simple minded and vacuous but he at least knows his way around FPS games.

I was glad too that he mentioned Painkiller, I remember playing it in 2006 and wishing it had gotten more love and now I think it has. He knows what can make games good but you can tell when he does not really give a shit about the game he is playing so for somethings he just does not care and that goes through to the review but then his fanboys defend him as infallible.

That said, I have purchased 2 games in the past based on his praise.

>>1224974
Yes and no.
It does everything to market itself like that without being direct about it. Otherwise it would be instantly compared to ARMA II and eaten alive.

Battlefield while still arcadey is still closer to realism but the thing about ARMA is is has all the real life boredom of standing around for extended periods like a real warzone has.

Fractal Doom has been updated.

http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37815

In all versions, the pain elementals now have an alternate rocket lost soul attack, where they fire a fast lost projectile that explodes on contact (like a normal rocket.) They are also shootable. This was done partially to stop the pain elementals from flooding maps with lost souls (since they shoot faster than vanilla, and only have a spawning attack compared to other monsters) and also to change them so that they are not helpless at point blank range. The rocket lost soul attack occurs less frequently than their normal attack and the missiles can be differentiated from normal lost souls by their smoke trails and increased speed.

The zandronum and zdoom versions both have difficulty levels. The zdoom version has 7 difficulty levels and the zandronum version has 5. Details are in the link under the respective downloads.

The performance tweaks in the previous non-crashy zandronum version have been added to the zdoom version as well.

The monster-only version has been split into zdoom and zandronum monster only versions.

Fixed an oversight in both monster versions that caused the player to receive significantly more damage than intended from cacodemon and pain elemental death explosions.

He's alright when he seems to give a shit about the review he is giving, you can tell when he *likes* a game he can talk about it's mechanics and the way it works and why he thinks that's good. Sometimes even when he does not like things he can say why but there are other reviews where you know he does not care but still wants to be taken seriously. If he marketed it as "first impressions" he might be better off.

I mean, there is so much that is bad about COD and what it does but for the most part all he can do is have a whine about the crappy story and thinks any game including white protagonists is incredibly racist/xenophobic or whatever other bullshit Kotaku check your privilege garbage he's decided to spout.

Then you point this out and many of his sycophantic followers just go to the extreme and think you're the opposite end of him because if you dont agree with Yahtzee you just mad.

Because it's a thinly veiled argument used by people who are too chickenshit to admit they're racist, like immigration.

aight we disgaree but i dont get why you're so upset with me talking about something you first mentioned mate, it feels like you're upset that someone disagreed with something you were saying

the concept of privilege isn't really related to representation of different races in films and games

but even on that topic it's not really that people are upset about the levels of certain groups in films/games/whatever but how those characters are used

imo the representation of women in games atm is similar in depth to the way you got chinese yellowface characters in older films but that's me

again you are the one that started on this topic so i dunno why you are so angry that it's being discussed

Please, if women were gamers more in the same way that males are then there would be more of them and no more and more mobile gamers does not count.

I remember that image which was a comparison of "male power fantasy" comic book covers and the front covers of womens romance novels and they're the same.

Read that cesspit Kotaku and you'll hear them talking about evil white game designers excluding women and minorities from the workplace. As if Romero and Carmack were turning away black people and women while laughing to themselves while going inside to salute their Hitler statues.

Whine about women not being in games?
Go and fucking make one and support the ones that come out. The entire argument even still implies it's the duty of the white man to make you a game because minorities just seem to lack the ability.

Why Doom has an inside joke to Usenet, or
How I helped create a cheat key code.

By Seth Cohn (seth@alchemy.tn.cornell.edu)

Doom came out Dec 10th, and first I did was go looking for cheat keys for it.
Didn't find any, but I came close. My brother Dale and I had a funny feeling
(call it a hunch) that somewhere in the game SPISPOPD was embedded. We didn't
find it in the code, but turns it it was there after all.

What is SPISPOPD? Well, to make a long story short, due to all the Doom hype on
the comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action Usenet newsgroup, someone posted a suggestion
to id that the next game be named something less likely to be used as a subject
header (ala When is DOOM coming out? The DOOM beta is so cool, and the ever
popular DOOM FAQ) They suggested the unlikely name of Smashing Pumpkins into
Small Piles of Putrid Debris. Of course, someone else immediately posted that
they wanted the beta of SPISPOPD and where was it? I joined in the fun, along
with a long list of others and started to DESCRIBE this fictional game. We all
got into the fun, and it was in part a healthy humorous response to the
pressures of such a long wait for Doom.

I probably posted more SPISPOPD stuff then anyone else at first, and when
someone else posted a signature spoofing DOOM FAQ author Hank Leukhart's saying
"SPISPOPD FAQ 1.0 coming soon" I flamed them and stole the idea. I claimed to be
the REAL FAQ author and asked for submissions. I got a number of good ones, and
taking these and all of the posts up to the first mention of SPISPOPD (I saved
them all, think it was a great thread) I created a really funny spoof of the
DOOM FAQ. In the process, id became ego for one reason: I was afraid of getting
sued. I mailed Jay Wilbur and asked what he'd prefer out the range of options
(id was doing SPISPOD, wasn't, etc..) and the only answer I got from him was...
well... I used it as his quote in the FAQ. <Big grin>

>> No.1225359

>>1225358

I got LOTS of mail including congrats, flames (such as GET A LIFE!), more
submissions, and my favorite, people asking where they could get a copy of the
game.

The best for me was getting a note from David Taylor at id, one of the Doom
coders, saying how much he enjoyed the FAQ. Little did I know...

To make the matter more confusing, a bunch of guys at Cal-poly decided they
liked the idea, and ignoring whatever features they didn't want to write into it
(and I don't blame them... some of the FAQ was truly outlandish), they wrote a
game called SPISPOPD. This game is cute, and using VGA and SB, is actually
playable and well worth downloading. I am amazed they wrote it in 48 hours...

So, I logged on Dec 15th having beaten the game a few times, and lo and behold,
someone has posted the cheat keys, and idspispopd is one of them. Someone
(Patch) suggested I write a little explanation of just how and what SPISPOPD is,
to help all those folks who don't know the inside scoop.

And as Paul Harvey would say, That's the REST of the story....

(I'm also including a copy of the FAQ, posted separately. This is MUCH funnier
if you have a copy of DOOM FAQ 2.X around...)

So play as female characters.
I played every fallout game as a woman, because I wanted to see how I was treated as one.

You might believe what you believe but keep in mind that you rub shoulders with a lot of people who just hate white males for whatever dickhead reason they can think of and they blindly, unswervingly actually believe that if you point this out then you're a nazi racist or whatever.
To go back, it's like Yahtzee whining in another review about whites being so privileged blah blah blah, like I go out everyday laughing at non white people or that I invisibly took from them while my ancestors were getting murdered by Russian Tzars.

They're currently deporting non whites by the tens of thousands in Saudi Arabia as you read this. Enslaving many of them in Qatar as well in the leadup to the world cup.

Yahtzee is alright when he talks videogames, when he tries to speak like he knows world events he completely cocks it up. If he mentions this in his reviews, it can be brought up in the context of his reviews.

not much point in talking anymore cause we obviously have a fundamentally different outlooks. i don't really consider anything a "non-issue" because i'm not gonna try to discredit anyone's feelings; people speak out about the things that affect them and that's fine in my book.

the "non-issue" argument just feels like a lazy way to shut people up to me; like bad parents who cook shit food and say "well there are children in africa who don't have anything so eat it all": that doesn't change shit about the situation the kid is in. yeah some issues are more severe than others but it doesn't mean that the less severe one's don't need to be dealt with too.

I could never even hang out on video game discussion forums where you have to have a username and avatar and all that shit.
It's what makes anonymous discussion so much better, you just discuss things as they are without any "oh you have this avatar, I hate it" or feuds following you around and other drama.

It's impersonal and instead moves to talking about the games and as an added bonus there are no signatures at the bottom of posts.

Depends of the situation. You are much more likely to be considered racism purely because you are white. You are much more likely to lose a job for a non-white person, even if you have better skills. Results of anti-white propaganda, because, yes, instutionalized racism against whites exists and it's the only kind of instutionalized racism today.

> men are obviously privileged over women in so many ways
It's actually the contrary. Western women are the most privileged people in the world. If you don't know this, you are a moron without capacity of independent thinking. Sorry for being harsh, but this is the truth. All privileges in the western society are for women.

You have probably met an exception to a general rule because of all the ones I've met they're usually uni student protestor fucktards who think the world owes them something.
I'd have them go apeshit at me and seriously accost me when I asked them to have their protest marches in Saudi Arabia (where women cant even drive) or India where they're treated not even with hatred but worse, total disengagement. However they're afraid they'll get called the magic R word or get met with serious resistance (physical assault or even imprisonment) and so they back away.

Fact is most feminists in the west have it easy and any of them who disagree are invited to move to parts of the world that they think have better track records with women.

Yes it got. Feminists have a terrible double standard since they accept and applaud women who shoehorn their sexuality in public.

"Seeing sexy women wherever you go" is men's ultimate life fantasy. You got brainwashed by feminists to feel guilty about this, sorry pal.

You can argue that violence in Doom is silly and uncessary, but you would be wrong. This is a BIG part of Doom, just like sexy girls are a big part of the games where they exist.

Brutal doom had this, now people make maps with Brutal in mind.

It doesn't have to be a carbon copy of Dark Souls, or even have any assets from/based on it. What's needed is a fighting system that approximates it's core gameplay in a first person environment, and a souls/stats/leveling/weapon scaling system. After that, making the actual map is relatively easy and fun to.

Yeah, all of Barlowe's hell-themed stuff is absurdly detailed to the point where trying to do anything more than a vague recreation in the doom engine would either be incredibly difficult or impossible.

It's a real shame too, because whenever I imagine what a fleshed out version of doom's hell would look like minus the guns and technology I always imagine it looking exactly like his paintings.

And do not forget about Beksinski, man! Those "hell" threads in /v/ really got me interested in their works and their concepts about hell

I must confess that one of my projects I'm focusing on is totally inspired by them. All this twisted and eerie stuff and no-one has done something related to it? Gotta take the chance to be the first one!

I'm starting with monsters first. I want to see how much I can stretch this feeling of wicked imagery onto Doom. Add some bits here and there and removing certain parts, stuff like that. And then I shall focus on textures, maybe. Some bone/skin brick walls, Faces and mouths covering technostuff, I don't know.

I dare to say that the concept of "brutality" in Doom hasn't even been explored to the maximum yet. Yeah, you can preach about how ludicrous amounts of blood covering up the battleground can provoke a frightening sense of danger, but it doesn't really compare to fighting certain enemies which you're not quite sure what the fuck they are or where they come from but you're damn sure you won't let 'em kill you, y'know what I'm sayin?

>I mean, there is so much that is bad about COD
I wouldn't necessarily say the games are bad, I've played them all since the first game (though I regret buying Ghosts and Black Ops 2, since I just can't really get into them anymore after having played Battlefield 3 and the other Battlefield titles). The game is like Angry Birds, so to speak, I generally don't hear many valid criticisms from those who rag on it other than merely because it's popular. Not that I'm saying the game is without flaws by any means, I'm just saying it's not this horribly cancerous game like people make it out to be, I don't much care for it anymore, but can understand the games appeal for some people.

Honestly, I don't mind the "shitty realism" of CoD and other games like it. That part of it is whatever. Not everyone wants an extremely detailed simulator with a quasi-realistic setting.

The main problem is the horribly made multiplayer. It's designed to have a low skill ceiling with very small skill gaps. And some weapons are intentionally designed to be overpowered. This is so new players can jump right in and maybe manage to scrape together a few kills. And you also get rewarded for every little thing you do.

It's a terrific way to attract people to your game and to keep playing them. Unfortunately, it's not exactly good for competition.

Honestly, I don't think there's anything offensively bad about CoD and the like. It's how they are presented and how fanboys view them as being the hardest of the hardcore games. And of course how they're being milked to death, but that's the publisher's fault, not the games.

He doesn't hate first person shooters, he hates hates modern military shooters. His response to people who say he "just doesn't like shooters" is, well:

"I suppose Warfighter (Pahahaha!) exasperates me because after I declared Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare as the twin bollocks lords of Shit Mountain, there were dissenting voices dismissing my opinion on the basis that I 'just don't like shooters'. Oh, you ignorant little bastards, stick your balls up your arse and clench yourself castrated! I was into shooters while you were sucking on Wiimotes, you cover-loving, health-regenerating, murderer come-latelies; you don't even know what a shooter is! A shooter is fast-paced, circle-strafing, wits about you, rocket jumping, last grasp of health, toodly fuckpies, organic excitement in a fancy hat! It is not riding a conveyor belt to the next chest-high wall and resting your head on it until you get lulled into a lovely little sleep by the other people's gunfire.

Perhaps this calls for greater clarity of language. Doom 3 and Painkiller and Resistance 3 will be called shooters and we'll come up with new names for Modern Warfare-style games, like "spunkgargleweewee". I'm perfectly fine with people telling me I just don't like spunkgargleweewee and Warfighter is bad even for spunkgargleweewee so gargle something else!"

Hey, it's this guy >>1224260

Okay, after some last minute touch ups, I finally got a download up for my first mini .wad "Escaping Death." It's not my very first set up maps, rather just the first set I'm "releasing." It's not bad, but it's not the greatest either. It's only been play tested by myself on UV, so I'm not 100% sure how other difficulties will play out or how people will take on certain parts of the levels.

Download:
mediafire download / skbuh6m989gh76m / EscapingDeath.wad
(Sorry, had to get around the spam detector)

I tried making the maps difficult through the level's design & resource management (well, sorta,) rather than a slaughter map style difficulty. While there are rooms that are filled with enemies, most of the time it's the room's design that gets you killed. The secrets can be pretty obscure sometimes. Just look for shit on the walls & floor, I tend to mark secrets with gore splatter. There's 5 actual "connected" levels with two intermission levels, a bonus level & a "oops" level. The first map is on map 22. Because I don't know hot to change the level's sky texture, music, name, etc. I had to work with what I knew how to do... The levels that are skipped over as intermissions are because I wanted the next level to have the specific music for muh atmosphere.

Continuing in the next post.

>You were fighting hell, but got captured in an ambush
>You were taken to hell's best prison, which is in the farthest corner of hell in a huge mountain
>You gotta break out of the prison & get to the Tower of Babel sorta nearby
>From there you can teleport over to the part of hell you want to be in
The levels are:
Inner Prison
Outer Prison
Sewers
Demon Valley
Tower of Babel (Not a copy of E2M8)
Walking the Arch-vile (Bonus)

That "oops" level I mentioned earlier is in the map 31 (Wolfenstein) slot, & I didn't know how to delete it... So, oops. Sorry for being new to the technical sides of mapping with that shit. Hope you guys enjoy, give me some feedback. If you have questions or need help, I'll try to respond in a timely fasion.

>>1227432
>>1227434
I think monsters only telefrag you when they're from a spawning cube, not just a MAP30 exception. & PEs only spawn Lost Souls when you're at a slight distance. Hugging them makes them do absolutely nothing, if I recall.

May not have mentioned this in detail; the secrets within the maps are either really obvious or really obscure to get. Pay attention to gore piles on the floor, hanging human props, stuff like that. I don't like to use the whole "offset/slightly different texture" trick to marking a secret too much. I rather use gore piles to mark a secret or hidden threats. In the second level's case, the wall "decorations" were the only hint to make progress at one point, while now there's gore piles marking the hidden way to go. Sometimes there will just be a doorway hidden behind a regular looking wall, though.

Again, I'm tired & trying not to get people too pissed off at my level design choice. Here's a pic of a part of the Tower of Babel map. I use some pretty annoying shit in the map. I'm sorry.

you didn't change the ceiling height on the other sectors. you need to do that too. modern source ports will draw it correctly though. however, you need to change this if you hope to go higher later either with or without a 3d floor

This is how it looks in game. But in Doombuilder the (!)'s are still there, the lines are also blocking, I cant shoot a rocket over this structure for example.

>> No.1228275

>>1228261
ceiling height is too low. make it the same as the outermost sector.

>can't shoot a rocket
because it's hitting the wall which is invisible because there isn't any texture set.

is it that hard to install or is it a drag n' drop affair?

does it actually make gzdoom features easier to implement or just possible to see inside the builder?

Drag and drop.
>does it actually make gzdoom features easier to implement or just possible to see inside the builder?
Oh god, you wouldn't even believe. It draws 3d-floors and dynamic lights right in visual mode, and you can select the actual 3Dfloor and move it's floor/ceiling or change it's textures just like a normal sector. Also, it renders slopes and you can just click and scroll to change them too.

so there is way less fucking around with dummy sectors?

>so there is way less fucking around with dummy sectors?
*way* less. You still need them of course, and if you know what values you want it's faster to do it in 2d-mode right away. But stuff like railings, tables, middle floors and whatever is much faster and more comfy to make.

i see, got any download links?
i get the feeling the latest-latest version is not the ones ill see in the gzdoom thread

also, can you have doors on 3d floors?

A quick google search gives you

Yeah, you can. It's a bit of a hassle, but certainly possible. This elevator and counterweight are made 100% of 3d floors, same principle.

i'll check that link out later but thanks for that
as for the doors it seems i can convert them to platforms and they open downward

that said, making a 3d floor has just fucked with my forcefield on/off switch

You need to have yet another two dummy sectors next to your first one. They should have no tags at all, and one should correspond to the door in it's shut state and the other to it's open state. Then you just use Elevator_raisetonearest with the first dummy sector as it's target.

Holy shit, map 11 takes the runner nearly an HOUR to finish. What. The. Fuck. How did the creator, much less the player, finish maps this long without becoming bored or hating it?

There's also an alleged UV-max run of a Holy Hell map which lasts 3 hours

oh and also that's not a "speedrun", it's an UV-Max run (I'm assuming you're watching Okuplok's Sunder runs)
