Far from it. Toriyama was a superstar in Japan with Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball. One of the driving forces for Chrono Trigger was that it was a game made by "all star" staff members - the creator of Dragonball, the creator of Dragon Quest, and the creator of Final Fantasy, together on one game.

Maybe the game would've looked better, but it wouldn't have been as successful for sure. And Toriyamas art is pretty iconic anyway.

Not that guy, but I get where he's coming from. There aren't any characters in that game, just caricatures. No one had a fucking personality, nothing to relate to. On top of that there were just too fucking many of them. How the hell are you supposed to care about...what..30, 40 something fucking people that don't act like people but rather like walking bundles of cliches? I can't even imagine how people give any kind of fuck about the cast of games like Suikoden what with the 108 characters. They just become names on a list to me when there are that many. By comparison, one of my favorite RPGs is FF6 and I think even that has too many characters in it. You get more than about 6 or 7 characters in a game and you're overdoing it.

Trigger has two things going for it on this board as far as art direction: anime styled characters and designs and nostalgia of the 16 bit Nintendo consoles.

Cross has nothing going for it on this board: not anime styled and released in 32 bit which alienates many people. Not to mention it is a rare instance of a sequel that actually changes everything but keeps the spirit of the original. Gamers want more of the same, especially gamers who prefer Japanese games. They want more of it and usually they want it to be anime styled. I am sorry but you know that it is the truth.

The fact of the matter is Toriyama really does have the most retardedly copy paste character designs ever. This is indisputable. Whether or not you like the art direction of Cross, even a retarded autistic child could realize that Cross has a more original art style than Trigger.
