>> No.1207214

Personally I think horizontal allows for better art, since you get to see things from the side instead of top-down.

Horizontal for stage design and graphics, vertical for bullet-hell dance and reflex/twitch based games.

If I had to choose I'd say horizontal, but despite them looking similar I consider them pretty different genres.

Horizontals tend to have level design and stage hazards and the like while verticals tend not to.
Verticals tend to move fast and have tons of bullets while horizontals tend to be a slower.

I love level design, and I love go fast dodging, so... cop-out answer, but it depends on what I'm in the mood for. I can't really say I enjoy one more than the other, and honestly, if I were to make a list of my favorite shmups, I think it would come out about 50/50 horis and verts.

Verticle.
The eyes more naturally look up when scanning ahead.

The human brain distinguishes when things are farther or closer by it's location on the vertical axis.
If things are higher up in your field of vision, then the brain assumes it is farther away.

Thus, vertical displays are psychologically superior in this genre.

Of course, there's no reason you can't prefer horizontal instead.

And in RayForce at least, there's a ton of interaction with the scenery. Enemies fly out of it all the time, and you can target them and take them out before they reach you, or just shoot far off battleships just because.
Not even Silpheed had that. Interaction with the background was mostly limited to hitboxes that kill you that are synched up with something like an asteroid flying by in the FMV.

Man, really? III is one of the weakest games in the Gradius series, imo.
I, II, V, and Gaiden are all significantly better.
If IV weren't so ugly and conventional I'd say that that game was better as well.

And there's still dozens of non-Gradius horizontal shooters I'd much rather play than Gradius III any day:
>most of the Darius series
>most of the R-Type series
>most if not all of the Parodius series
>most of the Thunderforce series
>most of the Cotton series
>X-Multiply
>Xexex
>Progear no Arashi
>Akai Katana
>Deathsmiles
>Einhander
>Sengoku Blade
>In The Hunt
>Boogie Wings
>Pulstar
>Blazing Star
>RayXanber III
>Border Down
>Metal Black
>Bio-Hazard Battle
and the list goes on.

I don't know if I can agree with this.
Most run and gun games I can think of only have a level or two, or some very small sections of larger levels, with any serious platforming action.
Usually platforming is kept real simple, if it exists at all. The focus is mostly on dodging projectiles and shooting dudes.

Pic related. Pretty typical run and gun level design.
I mean hell, if anything at all makes it atypical, it's that there's lots of slopes rather than it being totally flat most or all of the time.

You're right though horizontal ones usually do have some level design, I was just saying it wouldn't be hard to do in a vertical one Elemental Master has some branching paths but they all go to the same spots. Well just take a look at any vertical shmup.

Most of them are focused on just shooting shit and dodging tons of bullets on a flat plane.

But with something like R-Type, you have not only the enemies and bullets, but stage hazards to dodge as well, which allows for much more varied and interesting level design which just isn't there in vertical shmups.

Aww, gunbird, yeah!

That's what pivoting monitors are for.

I have a pivoting 16:9 screen.

I had a nonpivoting 16:10 screen, the contrast ratio and power conversion buzz were even worse.

I also had 2 17" and 2 19" CRTs. I don't like any one of those, and not just because not any one of them was a high grade trinitron.

I missed out on some viewsonic P220s and P225.

Death to people who aggressively meddle in my tech.

Silver Surfer is a great shump once you discover these 3 details
1)know how and when to switch the direction of your second beam
2)Select=BOMB
3)in verical shooting sections, keep shooting and if you see bullets blocked, that means a wall[same applies for horizontal]
also,Silver Surfer is both vertical and horizontal and it has a seriously kickass music

I've been playing DonPachi recently and still haven't managed to clear the first loop of it, but I've been wondering: does anybody actually choose this piece of shit green ship? It has less firepower than the red ship, and is the same speed as the blue ship but its shot doesn't cover anywhere near the same amount of space on the screen. I seriously don't see any upside to picking this one at all.

That's what I'm thinking, too. I love its design, visually, but it seems so shitty. On the other hand, I'm reading now that the highest score recorded for the game was obtained with it, so who really knows.

Yeah, I haven't. I mean, I chain when I can just to work toward getting an extra life. I've also been playing it with one credit at a time. I'm really bad at timing bomb uses (I always hit the button right after I die and don't manage to save myself). I've never made it to the boss of stage four, but I've slowly been going through it.

Both names imply nothing more than that you shoot stuff.
Either could be applied to stuff Doom or Gears of War without really being wrong going by the genre name alone.

I need help with Xevious. So far I can get to the second boss before I fall apart. I have two concerns:

1: There is an extra life early on, before the first boss. After the gray tiles fly by the first time, there is a little pond. Bombing the pond will sometimes reveal an extra life, but sometimes it doesn't. Is there a way to get this consistently?

2: In the pic, what are these crystals? Before the second boss they swarm me, merge, and fly off the screen. Do they actually do anything?

>They always occur at the same point along the map, but their horizontal location can vary.

>These defensive troops are indestructable. Two will appear (the Kiyapunaito and the Sepunaito) spinning around, until they home in on the position of your ship, where they meet and join together, and fly back to the top of the screen at a high speed.

Ikeda, because Garegga is Yagawa's only true masterpiece and most of it had to do with the stark, stylized, unsurpassable aesthetic (which he didn't draw; he designed the game). Ikeda's talent endures and his formula has thoroughly stuck.
