Is there any Playstation emulator that has z-buffering?

It's kind of a technical question, but it has a huge impact on the immersion in a lot of Playstation games.

PC version right?

Those character models are very impressive.

I see. So it's inherent to the playstation architecture itself and cannot be rectified. That's pretty sad, actually. These games are not going to age well without some massive recoding done to every individual game. I noticed the "polygon popping" in a Brave Fencer Musashi video I was watching earlier.

Yeah, it's the 2012 version purchased through Steam. I'm not using any mods or anything. Just running it in 1080p on the highest settings. I find the character model mods are too much trouble for too little payoff.

Mednafen and a CRT Monitior are your friend. Mednafen runs it at native resolution. The RetroArch port adds a front end, shader suppoort and superior synch.

The games look pretty close to the originals with it.

And by running at native resolution, it reduces these issues to almost nothing. About as much as it was on the original system.

Compare to HD where there's jitterying textures and distored polygons everywhere.

That's part of the problem. I really believe that the texture jittering, imprecise floating points, and lack of z-buffering are hurting the entire playstation library immensely in the long run. I have a console, so I don't need emulation.

I just really enjoyed the 2012 PC release of FF7 and noticed how much more immersive it was with the smooth animations and without the visual artifacts of the Playstation version.

There's a bare minimum that a lot of people expect from 3D visuals. I want something visually acceptable on a modern computer. I'm not talking about fancy shaders or anything. Just fixing what is visually broken in the first place.

I suppose it has to be done on a game-by-game basis, which would be a painstakingly massive project with huge legal issues. So sad.

Play N64. It has z-buffering enabled in all games.

The gpuPeopsOpenGL plugin has a GTE accuracy button, which can improve clipping. Works for RidgeRacer R4 as far I can tell.

Character models and texture replacements aren't really worth it since they're never 100% consistent and the models keep the same animations that look silly with fancier looking designs.

The only mod really worth putting in for the Steam version is the ogg file replacement to have the original PS1 music instead of the PC MIDI based tunes. I'm actually surprised that SquareEnix hasn't made it available as an option.

I suppose the 2D would look better, but on the other hand, how can you stand the whole "hi-res 3D characters over low-res 2D backdrops" thing when NOT in battle?

Last I heard, they pushed an update that replaced the MIDI music with the PS1 music.

gpuBladeSoft's GTE accuracy option does not work well for this game. Not like it would matter even if it did, since it only works if you increase native resolution, and doing so slows the whole thing down a ton.

This is just one of the reasons you faggots should not emulate. Play the games on proper hardware as it was meant. Also, buy the games poorfags.

You realize the point of the thread is "the ps1 looks ugly as shit without z-buffering, any emulators that somehow add it to the architecture"? OP just wants to fix native problems with the PS1 that would be there on the actual system.

Get fucked dude.

It's actually not a port of the PS1 game itself, but a port of the mediocre PC port.

Ports of ports, instead of at least a graphical upgrade to meet it's sequels. My how Squeenix has fallen.

>> No.1204842

The PC port was bad originally but had a much improved translation. They fixed many problems in a patch a year later. In 2012 they tacked on a video settings manager and further improved the PC port for stability. A few months later they finally tacked on PS1 music.

It is absolutely the definitive version of the game now. Looks 20x better than the PSX, has a way better translation, accepts mods if you're one of those people, has achievements and cloud saves, and it way fucking cheaper than the actual PS1 copy. What is not to love?

I'm not sure. The playstation has the GTE to transform 3d coordinates to 2d ones, which are then plotted by the video processor. Doesn't the GTE get z information as well, or does it get everything pre-sorted?

All it did was fix grammar and spelling errors and such. The core localization is the same otherwise, meaning it's still mediocre and inaccurate.

>Looks 20x better than the PSX

High-res polygons without wobbling is nice, I suppose. Shame that the backgrounds are exactly the same, so polygons stand out like crazy and don't blend in.

So accurate. Great game. I love how they fixed the music in the PC version. I can't wait until the enhanced FF8 port comes out on Steam.
