What if this retard had continued to stay at sony instead of going to Sega?

Nintendo would still be the king, and Sega would continue bumping heads with Nintendo.

I dunno. Write an alternate history book. That would be very interesting.

What if Nintendo actually had partnered with Sony back in the day, instead of Phillips, to make a CD peripheral for the SNES?

How would the game industry even be like today?

Kalinske likely would have still gotten fed up and left so we may have had someone entirely different in Bernie's place...

Or would we?

I think it would depend on whether Nintendo would continue to support this device rather than give up on it like Sega did with their Genesis attachments. Also, like the Famicom Disk System and the N64DD, if this thing would ever even leave Japan had it been released. If it was a success, there could be some alternate universe were Sonytendo Domination is actually a real thing.

With bernie at the helm, FF7 would never have come out in the states. Let that sink in for a moment. I'll let you guys take it from here.

I hate this kind of threads. All such speculations are going nowhere.

What if Tom Kalinske wasn't neglected by Sega of Japan after the Genesis? What if Hayao Nakayama didn't leave Sega in disgust, seeing how Tom Kalinske was mistreated?

How horrifying. On the flip side we might have gotten things for the Saturn like Radiant Silvergun, the RAM expansion carts and the games that used them, the rest of Shining Force 3, and enough Panzer Dragoon Saga to go around.

We'd be getting the Saturn versions of a lot of these games.

The Saturn bombing hard wasn't entirely his fault. Poor management and jealousy from SoJ had to do with it too.

Bernie Stolar is a scapegoat for Sega fans who still haven't gotten over the collapse of the hardware division 12 years on.

A lot of the things he did were textbook business decisions. It's just that the situation with the Saturn and Dreamcast were just really really bad, particularly with the meddling of Sega in Japan.

And he was right about RPGs. Final Fantasy VII was the first mainstream one, because it had enough razzle dazzle to get mainstream attention.

>And he was right about RPGs
Doing things by the book isn't exactly something to be praised, you have to know how to look forward and seeing how new trends are rising.
And with some success SNES RPGs had, anyone with half a brain at the time could know people were interested in these things.

>> No.1207107

>>1207090
It made business sense. Which y'know is what a businessman needs.

Also Final Fantasy VII didn't become so popular because it was a better RPG or had better RPG systems. It became popular because of its graphics and presentation.

It had enough graphical oomph and Square had enough cachet to do it (As in "We will fucking pull support if you block us") and publish themselves (Plus they had a lot of interest from US 3rd party publishers and if Sony hadn't of published it, it likely would have been EA). Sony were just smart enough to sign a publishing deal to bring it to the US and Europe first. It was always going to arrive in other countries.

Capcom, Square and Konami practically got away with murder because they would hold it over SCEA and SCEE. Konami could easily pull "Don't let us bring out Vandal Hearts? Fine. International Superstar Soccer will remain a N64 franchise then". It was the lower level guys like SNK that got the short end of the stick. Especially because of Chris Deering at SCEE who absolutely hated 2D games and RPG's and ended up blocking a lot of them till they gave up on draconian measures in 1999 due to the PS2 (And moved the draconian measures to the PS2 instead).

Stollar wouldn't have blocked RPG's, but he wouldn't have signed them to publishing deals and some other company would have reaped the rewards.

I think people forget that RPGs on the Saturn had absolutely god-awful presentation, like the Shining Force/Wisdom/The Holy Ark games, despite having fantastic gameplay.

They had no mainstream presentability, and Stolar knew this.

>Sonytendo Domination
All companies Sony partnered with were later bought out by Sony. Nintendo may have been right in walking out on the deal later on.

We may have had a Nintendo CD, then a Sony Nintendo PlayStation, then a Sony PlayStation, and then a boring notice in the media that Sony owns the majority stock in Nintendo. and Sony pictures is making a Metroid movie sarring Tom Cruise.

Man come on, you talk like FF7 looked good. The characters looked like weird lego creatures and the cutscenes art direction was all over the place, having been made by different teams the character models looked completely different from each other.
