hey everyone it's me again, munckeyz, one of the contributors to the chu-teng thread a few months back

i'm not sure if anyone on here even cares about it any more (by the way translator anons hows the translation going)

but! i have stumbled across one of osamu sato's other works that has even less documentation online than chu-teng did way back when; it's apparently some sort of interactive DVD called 'the esoteric retina' and i think i've found somewhere where it can probably be bought for around ~$44

http://books.rakuten.co.jp/rb/THE-ESOTERIC-RETINA-%E4%BD%90%E8%97%A4%E7%90%86-4988009010496/item/7496514/

btw, i also got the sato album "equal" recently from a link someone posted here, so thanks

Tong-Nou anon from one of the earlier threads here. The part in the middle should probably be translated as "Magatama Planet" or something similar, because that was how it was referred to in Tong-Nou. A quality translation is important, sure, but it's also important to retain consistency with previously translated source material, which is also why I'm tending to agree with Munckeyz in that you should also turn Mid-Heaven into Chu-Teng. It's a little nitpicky, sure, but Chu-Teng is referred to as such in the ending of Tong-Nou as well as being the title of the game.

I'm also glad to lend my proof-reading and grammar-checking services to polish the final product.

I feel that it's important to note that The Esoteric Retina is purportedly a video CD, not a DVD. Not to nit pick, but the difference between a video CD and a DVD is about the difference between a PS1 game and a PS2 game in terms of storage space (~700mb vs ~3.5gb) and general release date (1990s vs 2000s). Localising effort here.
After going through all the text and knowing whats exactly going on everywhere, its a political fight against three powers and bad guys from outer space and you play the role of Rin from eastern mind to restore order, by finding the pieces of 'Nanshus' face that was lost in an attack from the imposters, and to eliminate the enemies. Its a dungeon style and very restricted, but there is a lot of story and detail in everything, and looks more nice than scary. Eastern Mind was much more jacked up, this feels like a real in-circle follow through of Eastern Mind with some cut corners, some graphic tethers, that didnt seem to bother them? A small error in graphics glitch with someone you wake up you will always see asleep when approaching.

The small numbers of the copy explain it, not only stoked that some japanese dude ever released it, but actually got a copy for myself.

The detail of the game is slowing it down from being finished, but its actually really relaxing.

I know there's already a link, but I wanted to upload it to what.cd and they're asking for a rip with a cue sheet and a 100% log, that is, a perfect rip, which you can only achieve with EAC.
EAC is a program to rip CDs and it's recommended by a lot of people because the rips you can get with it are granted to be of the same quality of the CD (those damn audiophiles).
It takes about an hour to rip something with it and it's only something that can be done by someone who has the CD though, so if you can't make it it's alright.
Here's a guide on how to do that, just in case:

And how does it being an EAC rip at full CD quality make it differ from a WAV/FLAC rip when those formats are meant to be CD quality already?

EAC forces a retarded extreme amount of re-reads though. I had it crack discs before.

It is only the de-facto standard because no one bothered writing a better app... and because it has gigantic compatibility with thousands of drives. If you limited yourself to 1 specific type of drive chipset, such as Plextor PX-712, you could do equally good ripping much, much faster.

>>1169530
It differs because EAC can make sure that 1. pregaps are ripped more accurate than many (any?) other ripping apps, and it can make sure that there were no read errors when ripping the disc, making sure that your files are indeed full quality.

CD Audio has no high level error correction like CD Data tracks, so the only way to make sure you've read CD Audio fine is to re-read it lots of times and making sure you got the same results. Most ripping apps just read the tracks once and get done with it. EAC re-reads everything, making sure they are read in right.

According to their logchecker, it's because you did not set up offset correction and did not have AccurateRip installed for EAC (it is basically an automated offset correction finder plus an online database for ripped track CRCs).

Also, this isn't Roly Poly related, but I uploaded a few Osamu Sato videos to YouTube recently. One is a demo video for LSD that I got from the game's official site, and the other two came from the "Alphabet 2001" section of the old OSD website. Here are the links:

There are 3 versions, one for 14.4k modems, one for 28.8k modems, and one for ISDN. I chose the ISDN version of the video because it had the highest quality.
HOWEVER...
There's really no way to watch the video in a modern browser because it uses an outdated and unsupported format called VIVO (.viv). The only way to watch and convert this video (to my knowledge) was to download Mplayer and a frontend for Mencoder called Lincoder. After fiddling with the settings a bit, I was able to successfully convert the file to AVI and upload it to YouTube. So that's the story of how I found and uploaded the LSD demo video.

Also if anyone is going to send Mr. Sato emails I volunteer to give rough translations. I've been studying Japanaese for about 5 1/2 years and have a reasonable amount of experience conversing with Japanese people.

Jealous. But a sprawling megalopolis of 35 million people metro (or whatever the statistic is) is too much for me. I can't imagine trying to navigate that place without a GPS. It's good to know that there are people on this board who are willing to help others using their knowledge of Japanese. I was wanting to ask Sato if he still had any copies of Compu Movie, and what the price would be for it. I'm also curious about the music cassette he made, and would like to know its title, as well as the publisher. I'll try to make a draft soon.

By the way, I got these screenshots of Osamu Sato's bio from the BEAMS website (they held an exhibition in Hiroshima last month where he displayed some of his work). Looks like he's aware of LSD's cult following.

I think I've changed my mind about making a draft. Compu Movie was released 19 years ago, and the current OSD website doesn't say anything about purchasing a copy, so to me, sending an email seems like a waste of effort. If you guys are still interested in contacting Sato, then go right ahead.

>> No.1189770

OK guys, I've changed my mind again. There's always that chance that Sato may have something interesting to say. Anyway, here's my draft:

Hello Mr. Sato,

I am very interested in your work and would like to ask a few questions about it. I understand that some time ago, you made a VHS tape called Compu Movie, and that copies were only sold through your company. Do you still have copies for sale, and if so, how much do they cost? Next, I'd like to ask about some of your other work (games and books, to be exact). I have searched several shopping and auction sites for these things, and they are either out of stock, or don't have a listing at all. Do you know of any other places that might have this stuff? Finally, I read somewhere that you made a music cassette in the 1980's and released it through an independent publisher. If possible, could you tell me the name of this cassette and its publisher?
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope to hear from you soon.

If you think this needs any revisions, let me know. I don't want to sound rude in my message, especially since it is being sent to someone important.

I took another look at Sato's profile on the Compu OSD site, and it looks like Compu Movie had a publisher after all (I always thought it was self-published). Of course, this isn't exactly useful in determining where to find it.

I still can't get over this "music cassette" that the profile talks about, especially since there's no mention of it anywhere else on the internet.

All of this Sato stuff has left me with so many questions, and yet there's no way they'll ever be answered.

I'm guessing the music cassette from the 80s was pretty much on par with self-published hip-hop mixtapes of the era in that they're most of the time very amateurish, of low production value, only a few made, most of them soon discarded, etc.. I might be pessimistic here, but honestly I don't think one of them will ever surface online before all copies are lost. A few people in Japan who have reasonable music collections probably have some copies still, but they most likely don't know what they have and to them the cassette is only worth a few cents, easily discardable, etc.. With all of that said, if a recording DOES surface online, I will go apeshit and that will be the find of the decade.

In other news, I sent a few musical demos to Figgledev/Figglewatts who is in charge of the LSD PC remake and I am awaiting a reply.

Also here's the logo for Mr. Sato's short lived "Linen Records" label I got off one of the archived sites linked in this thread in case it hasn't been posted before. So far the only known release was the sampler an anon posted above. Some songs on the sampler were later used for LSD and released on the LSD soundtrack but it looks like most of the songs were never truly released beyond the sampler CD-R.

half way in fine tuning all of the mid heaven disk.
have to cater for style of how the paragraphs are organised in continuity to the original text, cleaner english, and graphic continuity that seems to jump a bit throughout the game (personal touch up).

98% of the text is already been inserted into the game itself, the not so brain heavy task of aligning the text and checking off 600 times is still to come, along with half a dozen more photoshops, kanji translations, and manual transations.

guess about, 30hours of work.

It doesn't have to be from the early 90s. Rule of thumb, any Mac that includes a floppy drive and has ADB ports instead of USB can read that disk. Ask us before buying if you're not sure.

Do you have a PC with a floppy drive? That's probably the easiest way to get a disk imaging program into the Mac and a dump of the book floppy back out of it.

The most I can do right now is contact the person selling the book so I can make sure that it comes with the disk. If I buy it and it arrives, then I'll try to purchase an old Mac.

My PC doesn't have a floppy drive, but my mom found an external one in her office a few days ago, so I can try to hook it up and see if it works. We still have a few old floppies at our house, and I can probably use them to get the software onto the Mac once I buy one.

That took me 10 minutes, osamu sato is one lazy mofo.
Had to combine 2 assets together to make one, once the paper is taken some circlejerk happens which doesnt let both animate, so naturally made it one animation.

That leaves the suinshin animation left, hoping to composite a video of him standing there instead of sleeping, and finding someone to make a trigger to switch room assets next time you enter. Easy is thats possible, going to have to ask around or slop down some beer money for that to happen

I don't think Sato ever put any music from the Roly Poly games onto a CD, probably because they're children's games and games in that genre don't usually have OSTs. All we have for now is that 8 second loop that plays in the Slot Machine game (which gets irritating after awhile, imo).

I'm also curious about those music videos for "Funky Solution" and "Equal." My guess is that they were shown off at some art expo or something. I can't see Sato putting all that time and effort into something for personal amusement.

>> No.1224093

>>1223728
The reason I ask him about it is because the client is Sony Music Entertainment, i.e. the same company who published both TONG-NOU and CHU-TENG. Judging from the art style/3d characters in the XIA-CHE video, I'm making the assumption that it could potentially be a third game. I'm going strictly on speculation and am by no means expecting a third game to mysteriously appear, but I thought it'd be worth touching base with Sato, and seeing if he responds, to shed some more light on the subject.

Additionally, in the booklet for "Equal", XIA-CHE is written in small letters beside the face near the section for "Face-Savers On Line". So, that video isn't the only appearance of the name XIA-CHE.

Which definitely isn't the first time the name of the succeeding game was mentioned in the preceding one. Chu-Teng is mentioned (as the /name of a place/, hint hint nudge nudge Chu-Teng translators :P) in the ending of Tong-Nou, and now XIA-CHE is mentioned in the booklet which is part of an album related to Chu-Teng.

God, I'm reading far too deeply into this.

Not too long ago, I used Google Translate on some of the text in Chu Teng's ending, and apparently Nanshu says something like "I'm sure we will meet again someday." Maybe this is referring to a planned (but unreleased) sequel?

Osamu Sato is a Japanese artist who made several video games and music albums in the 90's. He's probably best known as the creator of LSD Dream Emulator (a PlayStation game released in 1998), and Eastern Mind (a 1994 adventure game for PC and Mac). In recent years, he has gained a bit of a cult following thanks to the surreal nature of his work. In the 90's, however, many of his products failed to sell well and were produced in limited quantities, making them very obscure and extremely hard to find. This is why this thread was created. Our goal is to find everything Sato has made and upload it to the Internet so it can be shared with everyone.

1/2 After defeating ruuhou and chiitoh in the outer-heaven, you find nanshus right eye captured by darkness, needing the "bright light of the sevens' stars" to be released, the blessed sevens' stars from suinshin. After giving it to the eye, Nanshu can and does complete his face again.

Once he is complete, he talks about Chuhei being born from the same part of Coan as him, how he could have been born into the light like him, and even being twins can sometimes be born that of opposites. Talks about how supremely dark he is, and all the bad things he does.

Nanshu explains he needs Rins help because he is brave, wanting him to stay with him and help him keep his power.

Chuhei appears, says that 'hey man we are opposites yo 119 west east coast california compton represent' and even though they are so different since they're both from Coan(land of spiritual birth of light and dark) they will have a connection between them forever. I received an enormous amount of power from this confusing energy. Even if I manage to leave and go far away, somehow, someone will end up up calling on me. And i will be inflicted like this over again..

Blurb rolls on:
[GFX] Rin, can you hear my voice?
The dark space has disappeared.
And in turn, I will also have to disappear....
Rin, what does it mean to be good? What does it mean to be bad?
Chuhei became one of the dark, and i became one with the light.
Despite originating from opposite places,
We were one of the same before we were even born.
Chuhei heard the voice from the Mid-Heaven,
and took strong initiative to make it dark.
As for me,
Did I hear any voices?
What did i do?
I didn't recognise any type of problem in the Mid-Heaven.
I didn't see anything like this.
I didn't hear anything.

Nobody knows the future of the Mid-Heaven.

Spending over $100 on a computer just so I can rip a possibly defective disk seems pointless. I should probably let translator anon try to rip the disk when he gets around to it. If it doesn't work, then I'll have a reason to go through the process described above.

I hate to be annoying and persistent, but I really would like to offer my help in proof-reading it. :P

Seems legit. Good luck anyhow, and can't wait to see it when it's done.

Negro you got plenty of time to wait, between life and stuff im pushing to finish by the end of the year. Then a month on top to claim work with presentations and such. So maybe by winter 2018

Well I've already been waiting some time, so I'm sure I will be able to survive until it's done. :P

Which is why I was also offering to help; it'd reduce your workload. Come on, man, I'm basically offering free labour here. :B

In any case, you're doing a great thing. Keep up the good work, and take all the time you need. Better to have a polished product that took a long time than to have a shoddy product that was made quickly.

I think I know why previous attempts to rip that disk failed. I just read a discussion on 800k Mac disks and how one guy fucked his disks up by putting them in a USB drive for 1.44 MB floppies. If I remember correctly, an anon on one of the older Chu Teng threads did the same thing and later found out that the disk wouldn't work in an old Mac. If this is the reason why the disk was defective, then that really sucks. I hope nobody else has tried to do this with their copy.

Sorry to sound uneducated but Mac floppies and Windoes floppies don't work on opposite hardware?

The Computer Designing floppy is a Mac formatted 800kb disk, therefore it only works on old Macs that have built in floppy drives.
