I've been replaying Super Mario World lately, and..

Isn't this game, like, really fucking ugly?

Some sprites are just so goddamn lazy and the spritework is so all over the place in quality. Even yoshi looks ugly as shit

Especially if you compare it to Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger or Demon's Crest

>Especially if you compare it to Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger or Demon's Crest

It's almost as if SMW predates these games or something.

Also, no. I think the game is pleasing to the eye. Most Mario games after 1 are to me.

It was the first SNES game released in 1990 in Japan, the games you mentioned were released many years later and should be compared to, say, Yoshi's Island, not SMW.

Also, no, I don't think SMW's sprites or graphics are ugly, I actually love them, and is to this day my favorite Mario in terms of art direction.
Yoshi looks fine, he's dope as shit.

>> No.1201239

It's a launch title, nigga. You can't compare it to games released years later.

And no, I disagree. It may not be overly detailed but its simple style is very appealing.

Yep. It was a launch title in development so long it overlapped with SMB3. They didn't quite know what they were doing yet. Lots of resources would have been more at home on the NES, like those bushes.

I still feel like SMW defines SNES graphics perfectly. Colorful, pleasing to look at, great artistically... It just feels like SNES.

I think I know where you're coming from OP, but at most I could only really think that some sprites looked kinda funny, but not bad in any way.

So what you're saying, is that a launch game, quite possibly the first SNES title ever, looks worse in comparison to games that came out 3-4 years later.

Truly mindblowing stuff here OP, please drop more pearls of wisdom upon us.

I think it looks okay for an SNES game.

Though I do think Sonic 2 looks better and this is coming from someone who doesn't really like Sonic 2

I do think it is ugly. Along with ALttP. Both games have a similar artstyle, a kind of ugly pastel soup.

Mario World does have some nice looking touches (vanilla dome) but most of it looks so pallid to me, nothing really enchanting at all.

Just because it's a launch title that doesn't mean we should excuse it for looking bad. It's not technology alone that decides the quality of how a game looks, it's also (and arguably, mostly) art direction.

SMW doesn't look bad though...not that he even said it did.

I think everything about Mario World is meh/mediocre

Graphics are meh (not awful)
Music kinda sucks (nice tune but there's hardly any of it, i know it's supposed to be a motif but it's lame)
Level design is meh
Everything is just....whatever.

>> No.1201402

Are you all nuts? SMW is one of the better looking games not just on SNES, but in general.

They had to fit it in 512K somehow.

>>1201308
Sonic 1 is a better comparison because it's the same size ROM. Sonic does look much better, but in fairness there are a lot fewer levels so there was more room for graphics. ROM space was one of the biggest considerations in game development back then.

They're both incredibly impressive games that stand up to later releases on much bigger cartridges, IMO.

Sure, if that's how you feel about it. It's super subjective.

In general though, sprite artists/animators and pixel artists generally consider this game to be a very good example of efficiently using palette and dot limits in the interest of playability. It's highly regarded as a good example by people who actually make sprite art for a lot of technical reasons. The staff of this game made very good decisions with the limitations they had.

As such, your issues with it are probably a style bias or just an issue with pixel art in general. Nothing wrong with that, but it helps you to know where your unconscious leanings are. It's hard to be a critic if you don't know what your biases are.

>music kinda sucks

it's simple, like most other Mario soundtracks. They always have they same motif with some variations, the castle music, etc.

To this day I think no other Castle theme could top SMW's castle theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0aoqbDNKaA

The other themes are also great, not to mention map music, like Vanilla Dome or Forest of Illusion. Those were just short loops of the same beats, but it was such amazing, minimalistic music that actually doesn't bother you that it's constantly looping. Well, same thing for SMB3's map themes. Honestly, SMW and SMB3 are almost on par on everything, except SMB3 has more powerups and SMW has more secrets, but both are IMO the best Mario's ever been, truly his golden age.

Okay, this one I agree with. The castle theme in SMW is awesome. It isn't even creepy, it just purposefully gets on your nerves. You do your damnedest to get through the castles which are filled with deathtraps (unlike all the previous fun and happy levels, the castles are very grim). The music is so creepy that those levels can make you a nervous wreck.

One of the most atmospheric tunes in any game ever. In fact at this moment I can't think of any other videogame tune that contributes to the mood of a level better.

You don't normally like video game remixes, and this is what you consider awesome? I don't know, man... I've heard worse, but it's not much to get excited about either. The lead especially synth just doesn't sound good at all. OCReEeEMixX tracks in general are all about being technical without really making any good music, just circlejerking over how many layers their faggots can fit into a track, muh texture. The number of tracks actually worth listening to on that site can easily be counted on only one hand.

Mario music doesn't lend itself very well to being arranged anyway, the melodies are way too simple to do any interesting with.

Now, this, on the other hand...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62zyEEL0XfU

THIS is how you arrange video game music. Shitheads had done this track to death already, but here comes a guy with a clear vision of how he'd go about it and make it right. Not just by fagging it up with layer upon layer of horrible sounds, even though his work clearly isn't lacking depth, but instead captures the feeling of the original all the while adding different interpretations of the various sections, playing with variations fitting the original's structure, and overall just focusing on making beautiful music while respecting the original piece. This guy's talent eclipses that of a hundred muh oc don't steal remix fags.

You're comparing the graphics of two games made over five years apart. Of course a game made at the very beginning of the SNES' life cycle won't be equivalent to a late-cycle release.

>> No.1201676

I agree the sprites aren't exactly well made, but they still look good for what they are. Things are colorful, the expressions are funny, it works.

But damn, the art style was all over the place. Some things have black outlines, some things don't, some enemies face the side while Mario doesn't, etc. But that's only if you look at it from an artistic standpoint.

Yoshi's Island looks good, though.

Yeah I've always thought SMW's art was boring, nothing special. And like others have mentionned, its art direction is all over the place.

SMB3 looked much better, a good example of how people got brainwashed to buy a SNES on launch because "SIXTEEN BITS OF POWER MEANS BETTER GRAPHICS" while the game looked worse. These people probably did believe SMW looked fantastic though.

Ok, a late NES game looks almost as good as the first ever SNES game, but SMW still looks more impressive, especially if you were there back then.
I remember playing SMB3 everyday until a neighborhood of mine showed me his SNES with SMW (I didn't even knew it existed so no "16 bit power" brainwash for me). I almost shat my pants, the difference was abysmal.... looking back at it, it isn't that much, but it sure seem abysmal to my 6 year old self. More colors, more animations, more enemies on screen.
I agree SMW is not the best looking SNES game, and considering it was the first ever SNES game that's alrght, but saying SMB3 looks better is just wrong.... maybe you lie the artistic direction more, that's understandable (I personally can't see how a person can dislike one and love the other, I think they're both great), but SMW clearly uses adventages of the SNES, the easiest way to compare this is the color palette and more detailed background

I'm not really into World either. The level design is just boring. Every time I replay it I stop at world 3 in the cave, with all the water levels and self moving slow camera.

3 has a more consistent and fun level design, every level throws a different concept and doesn't stay for too long. It may have less content but it's overall a better designed game.

Yeah, cause every system has had their greatest work on release day.

>It's not technology alone that decides the quality of how a game looks, it's also (and arguably, mostly) art direction.

But when dealing with technology, it IS mostly the technology. They were used to programming NES games, suddenly had to make an SNES game.

Compare Super Mario Bros to Castlevania 3 or Kirby's Adventure or something really at the end of the NES/Famicom lifespan like Metal Slader Glory. There is a reason games look better towards the end of a system's lifespan.

>> No.1204828

It is very ugly, actually. SMB3 looks miles better and it came out on much weaker hardware. SMW in general is a sloppy mess of a game, I don't get why people love it so much other than childhood memories. It was a step backward from SMB3 in nearly every way.
