So, does anybody here have experience with the Raspberry Pi? Is it good for emulation?

I finally Googled this thing right now, and I don't get the point. Why? I mean, designing this must have been fun, but using it? Not likely, no.

I've heard it's not very good for that purpose, but I can't remember exactly why.

I would just spend another $20 and get a used Wii if I were you.

>> No.1200786

Uses Retorarch under a freeware Linux distribution. Not a particularly powerful CPU; probably limited to GBA/SNES/GEN level emulation. Maybe early PS1 games.

Keep in mind, the system is very much 'stone soup'. You pay $35 for just the bare board. No shell like the fancy transparent case in OP's image. No power supply. No cables. No controllers. It's an old-school DIY computer.

Get a Wii instead.

I have one, and honestly, no. For example, SNES games only began to run near-perfect for me on the third overclock setting (I have the 256MB model B board), and even then there was EXTREME lag on Chrono Trigger's foggy over-world. I'd say get a cheap ass old PC and install a lightweight linux distro if you want more fun emulation.

Hook up your actual computer to your TV.

Buy an original Xbox and mod it. That's still the best thing for emulation save a PC in my opinion.

Hell yes on this. I have an OG XBOX with a SNES emulator, the games run amazingly perfect.

>> No.1203116

I have one that I SSL into from Windows to fuck around with Linux stuff -- the few times i've used it outside of the command line (with Raspian, the raspberry pi-recommended debian distro) it's seemed a little too sluggish to do emulators. haven't actually tried myself, though.

>> No.1203123

Since it ends up costing more like $50 including all the cables and whatnot, i would echo other posters' sentiments in recommending a cheap wii or xbox.

Good for emulation? Not really.

I'm currently using mine as a Asterisk VoIP gateway. For our seven person office with modest telephony needs, it works fine.

Hey, I wonder if i could use this to run not just pre-snes and early mame / raine games but also stuff like quake1, maybe 2.

wait, no, a lot of it wouldn't work. AQ2 should.

Doom and duke nukem should work too.

You can just get an old lap top for 50 bucks and use that.

It's got no S-video, no VGA either. Only one USB port and only the system SD slot is less of a problem.

>underpowered computer
The Pi is both of these things. It's too weak to perform the duties of a computer yet too strong/power-hungry to be an alternative to a microcontroller. The only reason to get one is because it has great software support, for example the Raspbian(the linux distro optimized for the Pi) and indeed it can run quite a lot of software when properly configured.

I wouldn't suggest it to anyone who can't even handle Windows though.

It's portable. You can hook it up to whatever TV is at hand anywhere. you don't need much of a power adaptor either, you can power it off a USB hub.
