Yes, it's more-or-less chronological in structure.

After the opening chapters it (funnily enough) gets caught in a pattern, spacing out each TV Season chapter with one or more small bonus chapters, which talk about the Live special episodes alongside some "hardware profiles" about retro consoles and how they relate to the show (or Japan itself).

After covering Season 16 and the Cambodia special, it clumps together all the remaining material, covering the official DVD releases, Nintendo Channel, Retro Game Master, the two DS games, a short note about The Game Makers, and then any other loose ends (the Iwata Asks episode, Arino's commentary track on the JP release of Scott Pilgrim, etc).

I've screencapped a typical TV Episode page to show you what kind of information the book covers. The pages that follow summarise everything that happened during the challenge AND the side-segments, along with some trivia and hard numbers (how long the challenge went on for, what caused the most deaths, and so on). I'll post more caps and search for particular games if anyone in the thread requests them.

I'm kind of out of the loop... is Nakayama back on the show? He was my favorite AD, I know he made cameos every now and then but what's OP's pic about?

That's one thing I've always really enjoyed. The former ADs almost always come back every now and then, with the exception of the first Takahashi. The five revenge games were Punch-Out, Ghosts and Goblins, Super Mario Brothers 1, a secret game (revealed as Derby Stallion), and Street Fighter 2,

The Challenges


Punch- Out - Beat the game, later downgraded to beat just Soda Popinski.

Ghosts and Goblins - Beat the Red Arrimer in 3 lives,

SMB 1 - Beat 8-4 in 10 lives

Secret Game (Derby Stallion) - Win the Japan Derby.

Street Fighter - Beat former Manager Noda.

If Arino was able to clear a challenge, he got a 'big surprise'


The Results

Punch Out - Kept failing and getting back to Piston Honda, whom he easily defeated. Eventually they said to just beat Soda Popinski, which he failed to do.

Ghosts and Goblins - Cleared on his second try. The 'Big Surprise was Tsuruoka coming out and rocking 'Momoko-chan Love Song on the acousric guitar'.

SMB1 - Easily the highlight of the night, I'll detail it later on if there's interest, but he did it (with rule bending), and the surprise was Director Watanabe singing 'Goodbye Game' in a dress and massive head piece. When Arino said she looked like a cheap Piggy Bank, Kan pointed out her parents had come from Akita. Arino responded by saying "Your daughter is really pretty, you know!"

Derby Stallion - Kind of boring, but Toujima in a fancy suit made up for it. As did the King of Shyness, Nakayama, popping out in a suit that would have made Elvis blush and singing 'Last Continue' as the surprise. As soon as he was done leading a sing-along, he looked like he crapped himself and clutched his chest saying he was nervous.

Street Fighter 2 - Noda did fighting moves down the aisle in a Bruce Lee track suit (and iced me out of a high-five, at least Arino and Suda were cool at the start...), went up, and pasted Arino against the wall, winning easily.

In the last number, in a modified version of Kacho Fighter (Arino sang new lines over all the parts where they have lines from the show), he said "See you in Super Saitama Arena in 10 years!" (max 37,000, also, he apologized for making a mistake on the line, it's Saitama Super Arena, haha)

Stay away from anywhere central, Akihabara is so gentrified everything has an easy access/you got in in Akihabara tax on it. Stick to smaller areas as much as you can, and away from games stores too. Try Book-Offs, Hard-Offs, etc, as well as generic used good stores and recycles shops. If your Japanese is okay, try Rakuten auctions, I've scored pretty good there before.

The SMB challenge was to beat 8-4 with 10 lives. When he got down to 5 lives, Kan announced he needed a refreshment, so Matsui brought out a can of Red Bull (a major sponsor), and talked about how good it was. It was basically a brief infomercial. The only fun part was everyone chanting for Arino to chug it. He (mostly) did.

A 'we are all one' moment.

During the SMB challenge, when Arino got down to his last life, Kan ordered him to cool down and use a cooling strip. Then, he asked the entire audience, using one of the strips provided, to stick one on at the same time as Arino. Kan later commented "there isn't a hospital anywhere in Japan where this many people are using this many cooling strips'. At the end of the event, Arino said "When they turned the blue lights on the crowd and I saw all those strips glowing, that was really cool!"

I have hope. I liked "Always", and it looks it'll be full of in-jokes (Toujima as a teacher, standing by by the gate of Toujima JHS is one from the trailer). And I don't think Kan has too much input, it was written by Kibe and Sakai from the show (Or "Those two guys who never got a call from the Drama Division", according to Arino).

I haven't watched GCCX in the longest time, but I really liked how the translators always used the game's localized title, if it had one. They probably wouldn't do that with the games with heavy localization, but I will laugh if they title the Puyo Puyo episode as "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine". Or if they already have, that'd be hilarious.

However, he will finish the Karnov episode before quitting, and there's nothing that says we can't find another subber or even just work in co-op with another team.

Upped RAWs he got from the Japanese filesharing system PerfectDark (hence the name). He ended up acting like a twat, believing he had a personal shitposting brigade following him and trying to impede his progress in any way possible.

In the fallout, he also tried hijacking the subbing of the Karnov episode without Kakaricho's approval, and when people called him out on it, he basically told them to go fuck themselves, he was subbing the episode no matter what, until Kakaricho took the script offline.

Then a bunch of shitposting ensued and the janitor went nuts on the next three threads or so. It seems to have kind of mellowed out now, but I better not open my fat mouth.

Again with that crap. There were only three people that worked on the proofing on that script - me (as anon), then Abunai did a few things, then JD did a lot of stuff under the "gccxraws" name, and that was the last of it.
