Once the PS4 and Xbone are out, we will be fully into the eighth generation of video game consoles. Does that mean we will we be able to talk about sixth generation consoles and games on /vr/?

If not, when exactly does a video game become "retro"?

Never distrust the slippery slope. We couldn't talk about fifth gen consoles on /vr/ until the board asked for it.

There's three other video games boards this can be discussed on, try there, OP.

What this guy said. Gen 6 was kicked off in '98. If "vintage" is considered to be more than 20 years old, and "retro" is a step up from "vintage" age wise (just as vintage is a step up from "antique"), then I'd say 15 years old is old enough to be considered "retro"

>> No.1163469

Everyone here should have a Dreamcast.

>>1163441
Why? Currently we're allowed to talk about games/systems from two generations ago and older. In a month's time we'll be fully into the 8th generation because fuck the Wii U, and most the games from the sixth gen that mattered a shit would be nearly 10 years old or older (all >10 years in the case of the DC).

>>1163446
You can talk about anything on /v/, but /v/ is a shithole.

>>1163449
Why would this "open up the board to /v/-goers"? There's a whole two threads on /v/ about sixth-gen games right now - there are actually more threads about older games.

Moot did a thing once where certain boards were deleted for weeks.

He could do something like that for /v/. Then once the spastics move on to /vg/, he'll open up /v/ again. Which reminds me why he created /vg/ in the first place since if he was to do what mentioned earlier, the spastic shitposters would just re-invade and settle down in /v/ again.

So, I guess... since you guys are really scared of /v/ (breaking /vr/'s rules) you could make /vr/ once the PS4 and Xbox One are out, to prevent the denizens of neo /v/ from pillaging and raping everything in sight here.

I do have a DC. It's actually the last console I ever bought and I still play it weekly.

I said it cheapens the appeal because it brings too much diversity. This board gets along pretty damn well currently, and I feel one of the reasons for that is because the restrictions of allowed discussion pulls in a specific demographic. Alter those restrictions and you'll pull in different demographics, all with different views which will likely result in conflict. We'll be /v/ minus one generation.

>> No.1163529

>>1163506
No, it'll be /v/ minus two generations like it currently is. I don't think it's barely going to change the demographic at all - contrary to what you may think, not a lot of people care about games >8 years old. And look how many DC threads there are on /v/...

>> No.1163538

>>1163529
I see you're pushing for the DC more than anything here, and I would honestly love to be able to discuss it here. I also agree that games 8+ years ago are rarely discussed, but I'm still against adding more diversity. I'd rather a new board be designated for more recent consoles while /v/ remains the current generation + general.

I think we should allow the Dreamcast to be talked about here.

Sure, you get that one good thread on /v/, once in a blue moon, but it seems there are many people here who love to talk about the DC, and the shitposters ruin and report the thread, and the mods delete it.

The PS2 gets tons of love on /v/, praised as the best console of all time.
The Gamecube gets tons of love on /v/ too, people love how it brought in a ton of games from all their franchises, new and old.
The Xbox also gets tons of love on /v/, people talk about everything on this system, from Halo to the hidden gems.

As for the Dreamcast, many people forgot about it and never owned one, so they don't have anything to contribute, and either ignore, shitpost or complain, and they never end well.

/vr/ had tons of civil threads about the Dreamcast back when the rules weren't set, and we can still have them. That's all I'd like to see, a /vr/ where we can talk about the Dreamcast in peace.

I think that, somewhat along these lines, opening /vr/ up to 6th gen wouldn't actually kill the board (assuming a lot of infighting didn't start over BUT ITS NOT RETRO)
/v/ is too shit to save, but /vr/ is/was a clean slate, so even though a lot of /v/ posts here, it's not as shit as /v/ because it would be like pissing on something expensive as opposed to pissing into an ocean of piss.

but we shouldn't allow 6th gen, it isn't retro enough. Maybe in like 5 years.

>> No.1163579

>>1163529
I can see it working that way, but I can also see Halo and MMOs EVERYWHERE. I agree that there's plenty of discussion to be had about the sixth gen, but we already have a shitload of "I was too young for the Playstation; what should I play?" threads, and I could see this board filling to the brim with kids that formed their opinions about video games in the sixth gen and just fucking love classic oldschool Xbox games omg like if you're a TRUE 90s kid.

See, I understand why /vr/ don't want 6th gen here, it would shit up the board quite a lot, but that is only the PS2, GC and Xbox, they were the popular mainstream consoles of the 6th gen, and the ones everyone remembered, if the age demographic of /v/ is around 15-20 years old, they would love to talk about the 6th gen specifically over here in /vr/, shitting up the board daily with the same threads, and shit flinging of which console was the better.

The Dreamcast was never really that mainstream after 2000 or so people forgot about it, and just moved on. /v/ never talks about it, and it doesn't have a home anywhere.

/vr/ would be the perfect home for it, the Dreamcast had tons of PS1/N64 ports in its time, hell I remember some games were made for the Dreamcast, and released afterwards for the PS1/N64, it'd also give the Dreamcast some attention that it needs, hell I've played games due to /vr/'s recommendation, and I really want to return the favour with the Dreamcast, I mean how many of you have played Metropolis Street Racer?

That's all I'd want, for the Dreamcast to be the only 6th gen console talked about.

The closest thing they've released is Sega Classics Collection for PS2. It's a compilation of (some of) their earlier 3D Ages games, translated for U.S. audiences. I can't remember all of the included games off the top of my head, but there's:

Fantasy Zone 3D
Columns
Virtua Racing (seems to be the arcade version, or a slightly enhanced remake)
Golden Axe 3D
Alien Syndrome 3D (overhead)
OutRun 3D

I'm probably missing a few.

We could simply limit discussion of newer generations to ports, remakes and recent clones of classic games. e.g. The Maximo series for PS2 was explicitly stated to be a clone of Ghosts 'n Goblins, right down to arbitrary restrictions on the save system.

They'll be retro to me, OP. All of these consoles are long dead and no longer supported. My definition of "retro" is whatever the hell you were playing ten years ago and waxing nostalgia over though obviously that definition is subjective. Those consoles are in a really awkward position, aren't they? I'll get an ammo crate, put everything I can in there, and sort them out someday. Why an ammo crate? I don't think adding in the previous generation would be that great of an idea. I mean, I wouldn't mind it if discussion was kept within a thread or two, but if it becomes something that just displaces the older retro discussion entirely, then it doesn't belong.

Supposedly that Fantasy Zone 2 remake isn't simply a faux-retro game. It actually was programmed for the Sega System 16 (or rather, custom, as the game was too big for the SS16 to read). And in fact, a bootlegged version of the game has been made for an arcade cabinet.

M2 has some serious balls. That would be like making MM9 and 10 into actual NES games, written in 6502 assembly.
