Is A Link To The Past a good game to get into Zelda? Or is there a better Zelda game on GBC or something?
I tried out Zelda on NES years ago and didn't really like it, and I can't stand oldschool 3D graphics so the N64 games aren't an option, but I still wanted to give the series another try.

>> No.1161174

Do Zelda NES again. Go with the flow. You'll like it.

It's far and away the best Zelda game ever because it's what Zelda is about: exploration. Not people telling you where to go.

For me Link's Awakening for the Game Boy is the best Zelda.

What do you want out of it?

Dungeon crawling? LttP is your game.

Fun NPCs and atmosphere and a shitton of things to do in the overworld (But much, much easier dungeons)? Link's Awakening on the gameboy.

Neither? Zelda isn't for you, I'm afraid.

>> No.1161258

>>1161169
Give the old ones another try, but it sounds like Zelda isn't your thing. The first one is a nice adventure, the second an intense adventure hybrid, LttP is a more focused and developed version of the first, the mobile game add a certain atmosphere and explore the world and people of Hyrule (and other places) as a concept.

I really couldn't recommend the 3D ones either because I just find myself wishing for something with better combat, rpg, atmosphere, etc. The 2D games are pretty unique in their time and the 3D well they have a lot more competition in any given aspect and as a whole.

>> No.1161365

Link's Awakening for sure.

Combat and puzzles only slightly worse than LttP but the characters and sense of adventure are much more in line with subsequent Zelda games.

This. It's a fantastic starter Zelda that exemplifies everything great about the series while also being small enough to completely digest in a few days.

>> No.1161682

Sounds like LttP is the perfect one for you then. The graphics are as crisp and smooth as 2D games get, and unlike NES Zelda you're not just thrown into the middle of nowhere without even so much as an objective.

It's mainly a dungeon crawler; by far more of them than any other Zelda game. 1 tutorial dungeon, 3 light world, 7 dark world, and ganon's tower makes 12 dungeons in total. So if that's your thing it'll be right up your alley. Still a decent number of sidequests and other stuff to do though.

>> No.1161810

For the 2D game Oracle of Seasons gets my strongest recommendation. It's easily the most solid and well rounded title in the series, it's more dense and packed with variety compared with Link's Awakening and has much better combat in comparison. Neither LttP nor any of the post NES 2D Zeldas are as strong in so many ways.

Having said that, if you find you like interacting with the worlds in the 2D games, I strongly recommend you give the 3D games a go. Nothing else offers the kind of depth they do.

>> No.1161816

LttP is an excellent game. If you don't like it, there's something wrong with _you_. Not the game.

So give it a try... and if it doesn't work out, well then, there's always suicide.

It is my favorite of the 3D games, but I will admit that it's not the best introduction to the Zelda series, in both gameplay and tone. I would certainly point at OoT, WW, or TP before MM.

>> No.1162260

Try ALttP, in my eyes it's very much just OoT but top down, I'll always prefer the latter because nostalgia. I've always heard great thins about Link's Awakening too. It might be easier to play the original after you play one of those and understand how those games work.

It's a very complete, well-rounded Zelda adventure that has elements of all of the previous games in it.

So, speaking of Zelda, I really liked OoT and MM, haven't played WW, thought TP was allright (really liked the intro, but the world felt too dead). I got Skyward Sword from my sister last year, but forgot about it and never really played it. Should I give it a go, or try to find WW somewhere and play that instead?

Which is the problem, the game borrows tons of elements from previous games, but does almost none of them as well as the games which came up with them.

LttP and OoT are probably the best starting points for Zelda. Also LttP is getting a direct sequel in a couple of weeks, so I'm replaying it at the moment.

Anyway, if you like LttP but want more puzzles, the Oracles games and Link's Awakening are great and have a lot more puzzling than most other Zeldas.

If you don't like old 3D and the original wasn't your thing, try Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. If you can beat the game you'll be able to conquer the rest of the series with ease. It's also the game that defined the rest of the series in terms of world exploration. You can see a lot of the major roots of the series (besides the gameplay) first sprouting here.

First real magic system, the first towns, the first use of many key names in the series, and the first attempt to tie the game into a larger series by hinting at lost princesses and kingdom traditions.

Also, it's fun once you manage to master the combat and jumping controls.

Unrelated Ocarina of Time question: I bought the N64 version a few weeks ago, and have just got the ice arrows, taking the left hand path through the maze with lots of locked doors.

But there are still locked doors in the right hand path, and it seems that there aren't any keys left to open them with: am I missing something, or is it just not possible to take that route if you reached the arrows by opening all the doors on the left hand path?

>> No.1164721

I'm not sure if you're permanently barred from that path, but in any case there's nothing worthwhile in that dungeon besides the ice arrows.

Having played ALttP pretty late into the series, I really didn't like it as much as other titles. Ocarina of Time was more or less like a 3D clone of the game, so ALttP felt like a backward regression in comparison. I guess OoT spoiled me.

I think my exposure to Zelda went something like: Zelda 1, Zelda 2, Link's Awakening, OoT, Oracle of Ages, ALttP on GBA, Twilight Princess, Majora's Mask. I vaguely played Wind Waker and didn't like it.

For the longest time I always thought that it was possible to lock yourself out, but it turns out there are enough hidden keys to open all the doors no matter what you do. There are clever back ways hidden through this place. This is one of the reasons why it's my favourite 'dungeon' in all of Zelda, it's so dense, everything in it is actually clever and it pulls no punches given that it's optional.
