First game I bothered to 100%, I loved it that much. Might be my favorite game of all time, definitely favorite nostalgia RPG

I was never able to get a copy of this game when I was younger, but a friend of mine in middle school let me borrow it long enough to get all the endings. Definitely one of my favorite retro RPGs, right up there with FFVI, Super Mario RPG, and Breath of Fire 2.

Of course not. It's because RPGs had to store a lot of data. The games used the biggest cartridges available, which was rather expensive. Space was panimportant, because when the script of your game alone is, say, 700 kb, and your cartridge doubles in price for every extra megabyte, AND you have to have enough variation in sprites to accomodate the 20+ hour playtime, and music takes a lot of place due to custom banks, you simply had to rise the price.

Chrono Trigger and FF VI are my favourite RPG's, but apart from them and a bunch of other FF-games, I haven't really played any.

What would you recommend? Preferably something to SNES, but not obligatory.

I've always loved the "Heaven and Earth" series (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma). More action RPG, but they are story driven like RPGs. Illusion of Gaia is the best one, being top tier in terms of story-telling, themes, and characters; it's very linear, but I never found it to be a problem. I didn't really like Terranigma much, but some people think it's the best in the series

There's Earthbound too. Not for everyone, but good and full of pop-culture references. Super Mario RPG is pretty good, but I think the absolute love for it is more nostalgia than it actually being *that* good. The SNES Breath of Fires aren't too good, imo, but 3 and 4 are good.

Since you specifically asked, I have a soft spot for BoF, and even I say don't play the SNES ones. If you have to, get a fan retranslation, and only play 2. 3 and 4 are really good, both for different reasons. 4 is awesome because you get to play as the infinitely cooler villian of the game for some segments, and 3 is cool because it has a pretty "epic" tale. I hate to use that word, but I mean there is like a 10 year time skip and several recurring characters that span that time skip, so I dunno what else to call it. I don't even know which one of the two I prefer

Yep. Final Fantasy IV and VI were also right around 80 bucks when they came out, too. Most SNES titles retailed for about $50 on their release, but many RPGs would run a higher price tag.

I thought Magus was pretty bad ass, his entrance and theme music for the first battle with him was epic.

Then it was kind of mind blowing to find out that he wasn't in fact the real villain, that he was trying to summon Lavos to destroy it himself.

When given the chance to kill him later I couldn't bring myself to did it, so it made it seem even more epic when lo and behold Magus decides to join my party. He was always the leader after that, even Crono took a back seat to him when he was revived.
