1136172 No.1136172 [Reply] [Original]

It's been mentioned countless times in numerous threads. We've seen /vr/ herald the spritework again and again. The soundtrack is legendary. It pushed the storytelling medium in gaming to a whole new level. It has one of the longest and most lovingly-crafted scripts in a video game (yes, an even longer script than Planescape). It's a visual novel whose interactivity puts most western Adventures to shame. This is Yu-No.

I've loved the game a lot, and I've been surprised that there hasn't been a thread devoted to it yet, considering how it seems to be an obligatory mention in both fm-synth and spritework threads. It's a sublime game, often considered to be one of the greatest Japanese Adventure games.

So gather round /vr/, let's inform the world more about this gem. Any and all discussion is welcome. Dumps of screens from the game are also fine.

That's sort of the point of the game. Unlike most visual novels, there's a shitload of branching paths, and you need to sometimes even fail a route first so you can get an item (yes, this is a VN with an item inventory) to get further. I think half of the fun is just playing around with the multiple realities and eventually finding your own way.

I watched the OVA after finishing the game. You obviously can't expect them to compress a story of this length into two hours but many of the changes were rather weird and the parts they took from the game being placed out of order were confusing. You don't have to use every item with everything on screen like in some other adventures. If you are stuck it's enough to run around in circles and click around when you're in a place you usually can't access. Takuya will also offer helpful advice on occasion.

Look, I can understand watching anime and playing games subbed that are not available in English and I generally do use subs especially when playing video games But when you've done it so much you actually claim to PREFER the sub to the dub yet you still don't understand Japanese you're definitely a dipshit.

This has nothing to do with being a weeaboo. I watch movies and the like in their original language, with subtitles whenever I don't understand that since they remove less from the original experience than a voice over.
I think a lot of people here have a profound understanding of Japanese, they're just too lazy to learn the script and grammar.

No not really, as long as your fairly familiar with the conventions of the genre. Like if you've played Resident Evil you can figure out Deep Fear. If you've played Metal Gear Solid you can figure out Deep Freeze.

Sometimes it can add an extra level of challenge but it's not necessary. Example, I imported Code Veronica so I could play it before the US release. There's a part where you need to rotate a briefcase in your item menu to the latch side and press A to open it and retrieve another item from inside it. That wasn't a mechanic in the PSX REs so I didn't just automatically try it - but if I had been able to read the menu I would have seen the description of the button.

Confirmed weeaboo. I actually am one of those people who doesn't even understand English lyrics very well without reading them, music is a universal language although I don't really care for that native Eastern music like the sitar uses different keys and scales. Neither a sub nor a dub can ever give you a full understanding of a script written in Japanese. The two languages work too differently. Why bastardize it when it doesn't give you any greater and understanding?

I do find it interesting to watch foreign films with both the dub and the subs on since they DO often diverge appreciably. In any given Japanese script, you're only going to understand the basics of it, sub or dub. I just don't see the point in watching a bastardized version that supplants original performances.

Learning two additional alphabets isn't easy. I basically copied them down by hand every night for about six months while reciting the meaning of each character as I wrote it until I could do it from memory. I don't really know any kanji though. Fuck kanji. Lots of anime (those for younger audiences mainly) have furigana which tell you the meaning of the kanji in kana syllabets, but when it comes to games you're out of luck.

Most Japanese people don't actually know all the Kanji.

you really need to just walkthrough this game though. Just play normally till you hit an end, and then use a walkthrough from there. The game makes some very annoying design choices especially with half the routes being unbeatable unless you did another route with no way of knowing or even vaguely reasoning that the other route might give you the required item for the route you're on. The places to go to get to the next step is often completely random and has very little to do with the last thing you did. It's pretty messy.
It's not like this setup really bring any benefit to the game either, using a walkthrough pretty much detracts nothing from the 'experience'

OP here. The epilogue comes out of nowhere, and it feels like they shoehorned another game all of a sudden. The epilogue would be a damn fine story by itself, but it feels unneeded in the grand scheme of the main story.

Still love this game tho. I like how you finally finish this grand quest and get all the gems, only to learn that your adventure is just beginning (well, not really, but it feels like that). Sort of like when you leave Midgar for the first time in FVII.

Anyway, the epilogue is what keeps this from being the perfect game in my eyes.

>> No.1151258

>>1151206
There are several unanswered questions in the main game. Without the epilogue it would be very incomplete.
Yu-no and Sayless may be innecessary but them Dela Grantia might be a bit empty.

My problem wasn't the length, the infodumping or the surprising turns, it was the change of gameplay back to the instructions from the prologue. You no longer get an inventory or the ability to move around.

>> No.1151269

Yep, that's how I see it as well, at least so far.
This also just proves how most of the mysticism is lost in stories when they get too deep into it. References to ancient races is fine and all, but when you bang one of them and have a baby the magic flies right out the door.
Throughout the game there was a lot of vague pieces of information but you could kind of could glue things and piece it together without getting too heavy and specific like this.
But again, I still haven't finished it, let's just see how this goes.

Still, I think given the implementation of the point-and-click gameplay, it was better once they removed it and trigger points made (more) sense, at both the prologue and the epilogue. Things actually flowed somewhat naturally.

In my opinion, it was like getting chains put back on after having them taken off. The game felt so much more expansive with the new system. It doesn't make sense to go back to the restrictive style from the prologue. In any form of media, going back to an earlier, more primitive style that was thought to be left behind is ridiculous, even if, such as in your case, it is viewed as inferior. I suppose Elf just ran out of time and couldn't be pressed to make the epilogue play like the main game.

I heard that the epilogue was actually supposed to be the majority of the game, but Elf went over-budget, which explains why the game is like how it is today - though I'm sure this is probably just a rumor.

This is blatantly wrong, and this idea that freedom comes back up a lot if you look through art's history and it is often shown that 'advancements' does not necessarily equate to 'better'. You simply cannot make such blanket statements about this topic. Film, painting, photography, they all keep coming back and reinterpreting older methods of going about some task. And fuck, the very idea in relation to a VN of all things. You're dealing with a game that not only restricts itself to 2D (despite technology in video games moving well into 3D), it also includes no animations whatsoever (despite most games having moved well into animated 2D, where 2D exists and even further with 3D animation, where 3D exists)
Oh my fucking god I didn't realize we were on /vr/

However, I understand what idea you're trying to get at and I do somewhat agree that the sudden additional shackles was a bit of a shock. But again, looking at the implementation of their adventure gameplay I found it more of a relief than anything. I did miss the -check everything- functionality, but that was about the only thing I missed. The structure and use of items (almost non-existent except as a sudden route-ender), the disorganization of triggers, the rare but always in mind near-pixel sized trigger, the broken flow, these were not beneficial and there were constantly appearing throughout the main game. They all went away with the retreat back to prologue structure (which I had almost wished I'd never left a few hours into the main game)
The game used the point and click functionality to advance the idea of its parallel world structure, with its freedom of history and editability. It wasn't some random decision, or some decision caused by funding trouble, that they came back to the prologue's structure. The prologue was linear, because at the time history could only be taken linearly. The main game was variable, because at the time history was changeable. And the epilogue came back to its linear form because history again, came back to its linear form. The game was trying to get at that sense of freedom, and the lack/gain of freedom was a point it was trying to make.

>> No.1161871

>>1161829
Really, even that shock of losing that freedom (mainly caused by how suddenly we were taken out of the world) could be seen as an attempt to join you with the tatsukya or whatever the fuck his name was. Just when he lost his ability to do whatever the fuck he wanted (because time was reversible in the sense that you could hop to alternate realities), so did you.
And hell
Maybe even that disorganized and tiring trigger design was on some level, intended. Tatsuya never seemed to fully understand the device or the parallel world structure, and the player could never fully understand what was the next trigger.
On an almost unrelated note
Some have made the claim that the game (and its use of slightly altered parallel world system) is actually an interpretation of otaku deconstruction of VNs. Pulling apart the images and text and triggers and re-organizing them to create entirely new systems with an entirely different portrayal of same scenario, generally keeping some sense of the characterization of each individual as it was portrayed in the original game but drastically changing everything around that. It's even been taken as a possible example of Baudrillard's simulcrum (both the acts taken by the otaku, and the game's parallel worlds.) New realities no more questionable than the last, despite it's creation by a new author (god, otaku)

Oh and one last thing, specifically in reference to 'restrictive style' being a bad thing [in any form of media]. At least I'm assuming when you say 'earlier, more primitive', you were attaching 'restrictive' to that as well
There's a popular quote that a quick google search seems to show that some mtg playing faggot named mark rosewater was the creator of
'Restriction breeds creativity'
and just to quote him a bit further since he doesn't actually seem to be all that much of an idiot
actually I wont because 1500 limit but his bit about restriction gets the idea across well enough that I'm not going to say anything myself so I don't go know go read it
however keep in mind this has absolutely nothing to do with the actual topic at hand, whether or not the switch was a good thing. This is simply against the idea that returning to the older styles is a ridiculous concept, which I find exceptionally vile.

I also want to note (fucking 1500 is tiny) that just as the game goes against the idea that history is a single linear path, the same can be said about technology (and artistic) development. There is absolutely no reason to believe that the branch we're on is the best one, there's even less reason (what) to believe there is only one and finally, there is even less reason than that to believe that traveling along one branch won't allow another to flourish (just like the game!)

Still need to redo each characters route to see their individual epilogues.

The only English version of EVE is an all ages version with 'better' graphics and a translation with one too many Bill Clinton references.

I thought that for the alignment/collision-whathaveyou machine the sacrifice had to give up their eyesight or whatever, but because Takuya had been delaying it by hiding her, Yuno had to give up her entire life to power the machine. Hence the long argument about her giving up her entire life to power the machine followed by creepy incestuous pity sex.

EBE is good and not spank material at all. The only available translated version doesn't even have the ero scenes. And yes, there's a lot of outdated pop culture references, Working Designs style, but the serious parts are serious, at least.

Avoid any of the sequels. It's mostly agreed that they don't really hold up to the original... plus the only other translated game in the series ends on a cliffhanger because the localization company went bankrupt so even if you play it, you'll be left with some serious blue balls.

Every priestess 'died', in the sense that they were thrown into the dimensionless streams. Ayumi was saying that there was some chance that she might be able to control where they actually end up and live there, but in this particular case (occurring every 8000 years), grandia was coming so much closer to earth that power required would be thousands of times greater than normal, which the daughter would have to control in order to find a setting. And she somewhat managed to do so by temporarily stopping over at takuya's start.

Dad ditched randomly, presumably because it'd be a bitch to explain, got labeled as a missing persons and eventually simply declared dead by unfindable. Jesus Christ, way to go full autist. What I meant was that within the context of the *game*, it didn't make sense. Of course that blanket statement can't be said for every form of media. An example of what I'm trying to say is Resident Evil. Even if you do prefer the old tank controls, it wouldn't make sense for the developers to make half of a new game with post-RE4 controls, and the second half suddenly switched back to tank controls. You want consistency in a single work of art. An even better example would be watching a modern film that decides to go black & white halfway through for no apparent reason.

Next time, ask for the person to clarify before you write a million word essay rebuffing a misunderstood point.

And actually, my posts about art and its relationship to modern vs old methods is still relevant, even if you (seem to) agree with them as you clearly don't fully grasp how expansive art is
>You want consistency in a single work of art
This is simply not true. It is often easier to create art with consistent themes, styles and methods and it is often easier to understand a series of works if they maintain the same foundation, but it is in no way something you 'want'. A picture using both oils and pencil in a conflicting manner can be used to evoke an idea. The image does not suddenly lose value because of this lack of consistency, as the lack of consistency is itself a method and style of creation.
>An even better example would be watching a modern film that decides to go black & white halfway through for no apparent reason.
But there is an apparent reason here. Even if you ignore any underlying layers to the concept, there remains one very obvious reason why the functionality was taken away. You lost the device. You gained the functionality when you had the device, you lost it when you lost the device. Ignoring all other pieces of the game, there is still this one clear reason that denies any claim to randomness.
