Only thing above $50 on sale and under $150 worth a damn, covers stuff outside the Dormer's reach like N64, DC and Vulkan support for some shader coverage, it's 4:3, sturdy and doesn't rattle, has needlessly nice controls with analog triggers, non-Switch type hall sticks (back when these were extremely rare), solid Vita-like d-pad in the right place, oddly quality speakers.

Shortcomings are the screen could have been a little better, face buttons have a somewhat weird travel, some people struggle holding a flat slab without rounded sides, it can bootloop if you let it discharge too much and then you have to watch it cycle until it holds enough of a charge, and I can only get USB data transfer to work by C to C.

Of course, as a kid I saw the jump from GBC to GBA, played doom 2 on my GBA which just 10 years before that required a $2000 PC. I could see the throughline of miniaturization of powerful hardware clearly. The PSP cemented it, in some ways it is more advanced than the PS2 and yet it fits in your pocket and can be played on the go, despite only being what 5 years newer?

It is inevitable we will one day have PS5 class hardware in our pockets playing PS5 class games on a battery and with some of what SCE is saying it may be sooner than we might think.

Is Saturn emulation bad due to lack of interest or is it genuinely tough to figure out? It makes me sad that I would need to shell out the big bucks for an odin or steam deck

While having a large TV is nice, the convenience and comfort of a handheld is a good tradeoff. Also the screen isn't quite as tiny as you'd think once you take into account how much closer the screen is to your face compared to a TV.

Here's me holding the Retroid Mini (3.7") six feet away from my 55" tv, with the camera roughly as far away from the screen as my face is when I play it. Not as big as a 55", but it's about half that, and a 20-something-inch tv was pretty standard in the days of CRTs. Combine that with the fact that these games were mainly designed to be viewed in fuzzy composite signal, and these systems are displaying them in clear HD, and you actually have a pretty nice viewing experience. And even then all of this is somewhat moot considering most of these systems can be docked anyways, so you can still do comfy TV gaming.

So all that said, the only real downside is that there are some games that absolutely feel better on a controller, but they're mainly just FPS games which I'd rather keyboard and mouse anyways, so for me it's not a huge net loss. There's also some systems that rely on niche controller quirks (like PS2's pressure sensitive buttons or GCN's two-phase triggers) that don't feel great on a handheld, but that's less a handheld issue and more emulation in general, and again the cases where that's a problem are pretty low.

TL;DR, while it's not always a winner, 98% of the time the convenience and comfort of having all your retro vidya on a single, dedicated pocket-sized device make the other 2% a worthwhile tradeoff

I beat SMB1 on it. Played a lot of F-Zero X tonight.
It still seems very, very, very small.

Not a good test IMO, desktop's gonna be much further away than a handheld.

A good test would be to hold your phone as if you're texting, then measure how far away your face is from the phone, since that'd be roughly how you hold a small handheld (for me it was about 14-16"). Then lean towards your monitor so you're the same distance away

This might be controversial, but an input lage of around 120 or so(which is what it is on android) isn't that bad. A bluetooth controller on a non-gaming monitor will be about the same, and that's what most people use to play modern consoles.

For retro games you can use run ahead which will reduce it to nearly nothing, and for newer games it won't matter as much

I'm not sure why nobody talks about the strides that have been made in reducing input lag via emulators. For example, the snes mini was unusable until I installed custom firmware and enabled run ahead. Lots of people seem to like the snes mini though without even noticing the lag

Yeah, I feel like people really hyper-focus on input delay too much. Like, if it's enough to fuck with gameplay then yeah it sucks, but most of them have problably tinkered with setups varying from 10 to 100ms of input lag and haven't even noticed a difference. Hell, in a 60fps game a single frame is 17ms long, and tons of retro's locked at 30 which means 34ms per frame. Unless you're a speedrunner who's concerned with spending hundreds of hours practicing frame-perfect inputs, 100ms is nothing.

Video game consoles and smartphones could also see double-digit gains.

I'm new to this so have been doing some research for the past couple days. Please correct me if I'm wrong but so far from my reductive understanding it feels like:
- any cheap piece of junk will run snes/megadrive and gba/nds with no trouble but might struggle with psx
- more mid range stuff will do psx just fine but might struggle with n64, saturn, ps2, gamecube and dreamcast
- expensive high end stuff will do fine with those systems

For someone who was looking to get a "starter" device(something that feels decent but won't break the bank) my first inclination was to go for something like the retroid 2S but the more I think about it the more it feels pointless to go for something mid range because if I truly care about the demanding consoles it's better to spend the money to go for the high end devices to avoid a potentially subpar experience but if I only care about the (primarily) 2D consoles going for cheaper stuff will do just fine. So yeah it kinda seems to me that the middle of the pack devices dont have much going for them over the cheap shit besides the guarantee they will run psx smoothly with the ability to try out the other 3d consoles with varying degrees of success, though the experience will likely be somewhat compromised.

Am I completely off base or what?

anything that can run NDS will run psx fine, though if you up the resolution for psx, i've noticed it stutters on low end devices sometimes such as miyoo mini and TSP
>- more mid range stuff will do psx just fine but might struggle with n64, saturn, ps2, gamecube and dreamcast
correct, Dreamcast being the next easiest thing to emulate
>- expensive high end stuff will do fine with those systems
don't assume that with ps2 and Gamecube, you may have to do some fiddling

decide if you want horizontal or vertical and go from there. These days you're not really going to have any issues with handhelds if you mostly want to do 2d only, unless you want to do scanline/crt shaders etc (but even then most can do shaders)

Oh, I see what you mean now. I'd say 80% of everything works with controls, emulators, games, all fine, some apps like the stock AOSP file manager just don't like controllers, yet nothing you'd use more than once or easily replaceable. You have to swipe down for quick menu which also can be done under virtual mouse by flicking the stick, power menu doesn't accept inputs either.

>>11418924
>- any cheap piece of junk will run snes/megadrive and gba
Yes, cheap meaning above famiclones, $40.
>nds
Often, but not always.
>but might struggle with psx
Actually easier than DS.

>- more mid range stuff will do psx just fine but might struggle with n64, saturn, ps2, gamecube and dreamcast
Mid range meaning under $100 and 2S aside, yes. $150 for GC, PS2 and Saturn, but not very comfortable, as in generally 1x res, tweaking, rules out hard to run games like Rogue Squadron and so on.

>- expensive high end stuff will do fine with those systems
Sorta. Thing about high end is you'd have to go into Odin 2 territory for screen matching scaling, that's Deck money.

RP2S would be good for dipping your toes, see if you can live with setting up and playing on Android. PS2 and GC aren't realistic on it though, even if some games will run given enough tweaking, thermal throttle ends up a problem.

They're definitely small, yeah. For whatever reason, I absolutely love the feel of the face buttons. They're super tight yet light feeling, and feel like a hybrid between clicky dome and rubber membrane. It's not, of course, but that's what it feels like to me.

I found my hands adjusted to it better over time, but yeah, definitely not as comfortable as something like an X28, Cube, Vita 2K, or RK2023. I haven't used a Unicorn, but those always looked really comfortable to me.

At least for me, RP5 ergo is a little better than average and gets the job done, but it's definitely not actively comfortable. I was able to play MDK2 mapped as a twinstick shooter on it just fine, so that's one critique I don't really get.

Does anyone here have RGB10 Max 3 PRO (that last part is important because it uses a different chipset than the non-PRO version) and willing to test SoulCalibur III for me? Everyone sleeps on this handheld because it had horrible software issues when it released (Taki is the most tech-savvy handheld-tuber and his review was the most positive, unsurprisingly). I'm interested because it's a Linux handheld that's also fairly powerful. A nice local deal came up for me but I'm unwilling to take it unless it can play this specific PS2 game. I have my doubts because I saw Tekken 5 lag quite badly. PAL version at stable 50Hz is fine, I'd appreciate if you could finish the story mode at least once (takes about 15 minutes) to see the performance in Lost Cathedral - Ruin, it's the most demanding stage in the game.

And that's part of their business model.
If you don't like their business model, but want their products, buy their products from Aliexpress instead of directly from them. Especially when they're going to be shipping to vendors and influencers long before individual customers.

I have, none of the ones with RGB 10 Max 3 Pro tested it. It's just not a very popular game for how good it is. It's also demanding to emulate and I have a suspicion that people don't like showing games that don't run well in those kinds of videos. SoulCalibur I, II, or Broken Destiny get tested much more often. Coincidentally, RP4P is the only
ARM handheld that I found people running III on.
