I don't want to be a stupid nostalgiafag, I recognize that lots of things are better in games today, but there are things that I fucking hate about games today compared to how things were in /vr/ times.

Apart from the obvious things, I FUCKING HATE wireless controllers, even the ones that work perfectly, which they mostly do today unless you buy one of those third-party Chinese Ataris or Geneses. Give me a fucking cord, you berks. Why should I have to change out the goddamn batteries every month or so just so I can have some farcical impression of being in some kind of slick, imaginary, hipster future where cords are considered lame or something? I want the solidity of a physical connection, god dammit. I guess maybe I might be able to accept it if they made more rechargeable wireless controllers, but I think I'd still rather have a cord.

Also, I liked when computers were too complicated for regular people to use them. DOS was our own special little nerdy language. It made us want to set ourselves on fire sometimes, but it kept the filthy fucking casuals who are ruining games today out, you gotta give it that.

And I know I'm probably all or mostly alone here, but I don't give a FUCK about online shit. I hate people irl, why do I want to engage with them in a context where there are fewer checks on what's acceptable in terms of social interactions? LAN with a few friends used to be good, but these fucking MMORPGs can go fuck the shit out of themselves.

Join me and let your crotchetiness flow, ma/vr/icks. Tell everyone what annoys you about those damn kids and their lawn-ruining ways. And maybe mention some things that are better now, because there are those.

Wireless peripherals are a retarded idea. The only controller that had to be wireless was the Wiimote. No controllers, keyboards or mice ever need to be wireless.

i don't agree
keyboards and mice being wireless is perfectly fine for if you use your tv as a monitor

imagine having a wired remote control for your tv
wires can be a bitch for some things

games though, when you have the controller in your hand, you're not letting it go till you're done playing, so yeah that shit doesn't need to be wireless

I like that Hit Bit MSX2.

My projector and my PVM have wired remotes.

I had RF wireless controllers for my VCS but they went through batteries like a motherfucker and my dad returned them. I've been meaning to pick up another set though now that batteries are better and much cheaper.

I prefer the wireless controllers for gen 7 and Logitech made some pretty great wireless controllers for gen 6 too.

As long the peripheral doesn't eat batteries like candy like in the /vr/ days, wireless isn't too big of a deal for me. The wireless XBox360 controller is a surprisingly respectable battery sipper.

>> No.1140936

I, too, hate forced wireless. I have no complaints about the PS3 controller because I can plug that sucker in and forget all about everything I hate about wireless controllers but shit like the Wii classic controller which plugs into the Wiimote and a Logitech wireless peice of shit for PC which I have lying around, barely used make me want to stab my own face off.

I have a wireless keyboard which I use as a remote control (never for games or typing) and that's fine for what I use it for but it pisses me off that I can't plug it in to charge the batteries.

I also sort of agree about DOS. It kept idiots away but it wasn't really all that complicated once you started to use it. To this day I can't help but be shocked when my peers, supposed IT profressionals, don't know the basic DOS-like commands for the Windows command line or Unix shells. I'm not talking about complex stuff, I'm talking about the 'cd' command.

can I just say it? Fuck DLC, and fuck achievements.
The former is a great idea on paper (a platform to give more life to your game after you beat it), but in execution, it is complete and utter bullshit and it only encourages lazy game design (Game is designed from the start with DLC in mind, purposely withholding content to sell it to you later). It's like every game you buy today it's just a fancy demo or unfinished prototype unless you buy the DLC. And don't even get me started in the preorder exclusive bullshit.

The later is a shitty replacement for unlockables now that actual unlockables are DLC. It's absolutely pointless to anyone but the OCD attention whoring generations of today, and it gives me 0 motivation to play a game after beating it once, because I'm not gonna 100% my game just for a lousy piece of text I can show my friends online. How about giving me an actual reward for my effort, like all those characters/modes/weapons/costumes/stages/cheats/etc. you're trying to sell to me, you cheap bastards?

I think everyone here can unite under the fact that tablets are, as unfortunate as it is, the future. Handhelds, consoles, the Personal Computer--in a few years they will all be consumed by the casual iPad audiences' maw.

Your, and my, preferred way of things are going away. Previous generations had old men and women complaining, "Things ain't the way they use ta be," but kids that are 20 years old now will end up saying that before the end of the decade.

The thing that bugs me about touch screens is how unsanitary they are to me. I'm a bit of a germophobe and having some slick, glossy screen with fingerprints all over it all of the time grosses me out. I don't like using my fingers. I cringe when I see someone touching a touchscreen like that. After all the time I spent getting my screens to be clear and clean. I don't think I could handle a tablet unless it had a stylus. When the pin pads at stores have a missing stylus and I have to use my fingers or when I use the ATM they feel so dirty from people's fingers. So I'll probably start carrying an extra DS stylus or something I guess. Maybe I sound crazy. But it just makes me feel rather nauseous.

As for back when computers were harder to learn and not as user friendly, I didn't have one then. We were poor folk and computers weren't very affordable then. I'm not computer illiterate. But I just don't have the experience with these really old devices.

But the old way doesn't really fit in with today's "touch screen, get stuff" mentality. Not everyone wants to sit around having to program their computer or mobile device to do something when it's just easier to download the latest apps created by someone else. And you won't sell many devices if the only way to make them do things is the old fashioned way. Although I think it would be amusing if junior had to jump through some hoops to get Angry Birds to install and run on his ipad.
As for PCs, I don't like to think they will go away. I like my PC. A tablet might be nice for mobile use or casual use. I'd like to get one for my mom. But with major title PC games and movies I think people would often rather have a larger screen. I think that we'll just see TVs becoming more and more married to PC stuff. I'm surprised they don't already come with small hardrives and their own OS yet. And PCs will pretty much be relegated to people actually interested in computing.

Comment too long... I was thinking that tablets remind me of the hand computers in that Asimov story about how everyone has forgotten how to do even simple math because they let their computers calculate for them. I'd hate to see people become stupid because they spend years tapping icons every time they need something. My sister's phone broke and you would have thought it was the end of the world. >> No.1142974

I could see tablets becoming the most used by casual consumers for their computer needs, but there's no way in hell personal computers are going to phase out any time in the near future. Tablets just aren't suitable for many programs used in the high-end user group.

For example, there's no way Pro Tools could run more efficiently on a tablet than on a PC with a mouse and keyboard. There are far too many keyboard commands, menus to navigate, and the need for finite placement of a cursor. The smooth use of the program really depends on the user being able to perform dozens of frequently used commands with the stroke of a few keys. A touch screen really can't accurately reproduce this control scheme, in my opinion.

Of course, I'm open to being proved wrong. But I don't think it's likely.

The tablet market will definitely move a large portion of casuals away from PCs though. Which can be good and bad. I don't even know if the idea of a niche consumer base really exists any more in the games industry, but let's hope so.

but the best situation is when the "achievements" (or whatever they happen to be called in some particular retro game) are just fun for their own sake, because they drive you to play in a way that you wouldn't have come up with on your own, but that turns out to be pretty interesting and fun

I loved that beast. I really want to get a usb to ps2 converter for it. I would love to use it with emulators.

To be fair though, dos and command line stuff is not an everyday part of computers for most people. There are GUIs for everything now.

>change out the goddamn batteries every month or so
Casual detected. Even my 710 only lasts 100 hours or so with the highest capacity I can find and rumble switched off. If you don't burn through that in less than a month you're doing something wrong.

Also, enjoy tripping over your cables. I like sitting on the couch while playing and any asshole who walks by is going to send either the stick, or worse, the console flying. I literally cordon off the area when the kids have friends over who want to play on the old consoles.

Things that annoy me about kids:

Wanting to play anything pre gen 6 on the LCD instead of the CRT I have specifically for playing retro.

Getting bored having to do anything repetitive. Hurr Durr. I can spend >9000 hours walking in the tall grass but cry when I run out of continues on Donkey Kong

Button mashing. Yes, there are a few games where you need to do this. Learn what they are and use it there. The rest of the time fucking don't.

Sucking. Kids today are all about FPS with shit controls or gay RPGs. Allegedly they have good reaction times. But they have shit motor skills. Get them playing something like joust coop and you end up having to kill them just because they keep getting in the way.

I don't really care about wireless, though I hate online bullshit. I don't need to play a game with other people who I don't know to enjoy the game.

What really pisses me off (about to sound like a serious old person here) is the entire process involved in paying a game.

When I was a kid it was
>insert game
>push the power button
>play game

Now it's more like
>power on system
>wait for system to boot up
>log into account
>wait for wifi to connect
>insert game
>push action button on game icon
>game needs to install
>it's fucking two gigs
>go pour a drink and make a snack
>game finally finishes installing
>get ready to play game
>game needs to download another gig worth of patches and updates
>wait for these to download
>wait for these to install
>I just want to play a game
>system can't multitask during download/install process
>switch input modes on TV to old console while the new one does its shit
>insert old game
>push power
>play game

Yeah, but the Atari had SO MANY DAMN GAMES in the first place, that "handful" of awesome, must-play games is still 30-40 gems.

That number might be much lower though if you don't like really old-school shmups.

I used to play half-life 1 in LAN back them. Most of us had similar level so it was really fun. Shouting people who is playing in the same room as you seeing their faces and expression is not the same that online game even if you use voice.

I played recently TF 2 only to get killed really fast by hardcore games. Got bored and quit
