1132586 No.1132586[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Sup /vr/, I'm looking for an older action/adventure/RPG type game. I've played and loved Zelda 1 and 2, StarTropics, Crystalis and DQ1-6. I've also played the Soulblazer games so I'm not sure what to play next.

I like exploration, non-convoluted mechanics (like some PSX jrpgs that tried a little too hard) and colorful, rich worlds.

Any recommendations?

Give Cosmo Police Galivan a shot. Famicom title, has a translation patch on romhacking.net.

Don't be afraid to use a FAQ in place of a manual either, the game drops you straight in so if you don't have a little patience it can be a little tricky to figure out at first. Once you learn the basics it flows like warm butter, though. Nice secrets and exploration value.

Faria's another NES action-RPG. If you've never played it, it might be worth checking out. There's also Rygar, Deadly Towers, and Willow, other NES titles with some RPG-ish/actiony/adventury themes.

Actraiser if you haven't. Your Soulblazer mention reminded me of that; it doesn't have a "walking around"-type overworld but it still gives some exploration feel. Also Illusion of Gaia fits fairly well here. Then again, these are well-known games so maybe you've played them.

The Guardian Legend, its rooms get a little samey (as opposed to being "colorful, rich") but it has a lot of charm in some other respects.

Uh, River City Ransom seems to fit.

Solstice for NES is worth a try, for the exploration (and audiovisuals). It may not be what you want though.

E.V.O. for SNES is awesome and probably fits here.

Not retro but check out the Zenonia series. It's Zelda with levelling, and a good/evil system. It's pixellated and there's quests and exploration. It's a little grindy, but as a Zelda 1 fan, it's right up there. You couldn't really tell it's not retro.

A Link to the Past.

I mean it's the natural progression after playing Zelda 1 & 2, but it's also arguably better than both of them put together.

Ok, at the beginning it is linear to the degree of you needing to be at X place at so and so time, so prepare for that. But once you get into Dark World and past the first dungeons it opens up significantly.

Final Fantasy 4 is cool, pretty much entirely story driven but it has nice characters and is the first final fantasy I really liked. I don't like 6, but lots of people love that game and many claim it to be the best one, so whatever. Never played 5, but I've heard it's good and that the Job system is fantastic. 7 is overrated but still plenty good (graphics are quite outdated though). 8 is a piece of shit emo bullshit garbage that no one should ever play, the junction system is kinda neat though, and Rinoa is probably my favorite final fantasy girl, but I still say avoid it. 9 is probably the best, and at its core is like a "classic" RPG, it even has the standard "black mage" from the original final fantasy. 10 is good, but I don't think it's as good as people say it is. 12 is a boring, political story and the combat is really meh, gambit system is a neat idea, but I don't think it belongs in a final fantasy game. 13 has the best combat of any RPG I've ever played (as long as you don't upgrade the chrystarium system until you absolutely need too -- more fun that way), but the voice acting, story, characters, everything else is ass pancakes. Terrible. If you can find a way to play the game with japanese audio and no subtitles, without knowing the story already, I would say it gets 100x better because then you can make up your own story and probably be just as correct without having to listen to their innane banter or Hope's whining, or Snow's bullshit

I wasn't originally going to post what is essentially a run-on sentence, so that's why 1-3 aren't included. 1 is cool because you get to choose your party, but isn't really that great imo. 2 has a cool leveling system, but also isn't that great, but I liked the after-years version (with Minwu) and found it to be better than the actual game. Never played 3

TL;DR:
>9 is the best, play it
>Under 0 circumstances should you play 8
>I like 4, but be sure to get a "hard type" version
>13 has best combat -- the tradeoff is that it has the worst everything else

Play 13 while only minimally upgrading the Chrystarium; you should only upgrade (level up) when you just cannot beat whatever it is that you're on. It's very fun and reactive that way, since if you're not paying attention you die. Cancelling your chain (pressing triangle? so that you only attack with what you can) becomes absolutely necessary, and you really have to watch how/who you/your teammates are healing. It's the most challenging RPG combat I've done. I got to Barthandaleus (fuck the spelling) without ever upgrading the Chrystarium, and I felt almost Dark Souls SL1 accomplished for it

13 isn't your stats beating the enemies stats, it's you beating the enemy. I stand by my statement, and yes, I've done low level games of other final fantasys as well

You can beat every battle on disc one by auto battling or pressing the A button over and over again. There is almost no strategy, FFXIII is practically a shitty beat em up. I'd rather play ANY FF 1-12 than sit thought the bore fest that was 13.

If you level up the chrystarium, yes, but try not doing that. It's a pretty good battle system. Every fucking final fantasy can be beaten be mashing A (default attack) for all members including the mages. The only way final fantasys are difficult is if you make them that way by running away from every battle (the equivalent of not leveling up the chrystarium)

13's battle system would be a "difficult" rom hack's paradise

I'll stop pursuing this, I just wanted to defend my opinion a little more, and now I feel like it's defended enough

Some people feel that way about Final Fantasy games in general, you know, not just 13.
Now, I'm a JRPG fan myself, and I like most FF games, but one legit problem they have is that status effect spells tend to be shit compared to other JRPGs like Dragon Quest where they are almost essential, and instead direct damage spells are key.

This is one of the key areas where Final Fantasy differs from traditional RPGs like D&D, and why Dragon Quest is actually more similar to them (in spite of the fact that the FF1 and FF3j actually use D&D's vancian magic).

Strategy in a lot of FF games boils down to "I use my most damaging attack." In DQ games you have to pay more attention to debuffing, buffing, inventory management, and other things.

>Strategy in a lot of FF games boils down to "I use my most damaging attack."
Yeah, but at lest my most damaging attack differs in different situations, and I use buffs in FF (I don't know about you, but I'm all about some Haste).

My point was 13's battle system is just too boring, too easy and lacked strategy, not just for an FF game, but for an RPG in general.

Differs how? Elemental weaknesses? That's a given in almost every JRPG ever - and is arguably used to greater tactical effect in Pokémon than in most FF games.

If you liked the SoulBlazer series, might I recommend the spiritual successor on the PSX, Granstream SaGa? It was also made by Quintet, with the same sound and visual team, but the transition to 3D wasn't without bumps.

The game also provides a surprising amount of replayability in terms of secrets (the God cards and their rewards, the Onimaru, the optional return to the Wind Shrine)
