We discuss about our silly portable electric devices that are intended to play (retro)video games

SoC Comparison https://versus.com/en/mobile-chipset

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/retroid store

>Before you buy
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering. You better have bare basic desktop knowledge on how to unzip files and put them in folders. We are not here to teach you how.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

I lost my mm+ when I loaned it out to a friend. Bro said he'll buy me a new one up to 200...should I just get the mm again or is there a much better option? The mm was a bit too narrow for my hands and would have preferred it bit wider.only looking to play up to Playstation 1. A crisp bright colorful screen and a very good dpad with good grip is my ideal scenario.

Hey, I just won a neat little Game Boy Pocket on an auction and while the body and screen look fine, I can't help but notice that there are what seems like some weird chippings around the screen? Is this the protective film just ungluing itself with age (I've seen some GBPs that have those) or is it something wrong with the screen lens itself? I know that the latter isn't expensive at all to replace, just curious if I'll have to do so once the unit arrives. Cheers!

The two devices I've tried have good build quality, but it really depends on what device you plan on getting. If you're going for a PC Ayaneo device I can only speak for the outdated 5560U Air, and while I love it for playing lighter weight games in bed, that model has a very small battery life. And it comes with Windows by default which is awful on a handheld, both in terms of navigation and trying to run certain games full screen. Any SteamOS-like gaming distro will make for an infinitely better gaming experience once installed. Of course Ayaneo's later devices have much better chips and battery sizes in comparison though, not to mention performance.
If you're talking about their Android devices, the Pocket Air has superior battery efficiency due to running on ARM, it has the same battery size but it can last for hours in comparison. And it's still a competent emulation handheld in its own right, even though it isnt as strong as its Windows counterpart.

>> No.11364705

Nah, a delay wouldn't have fixed the fatal flaw that is the screen size. The only reason the Mini didn't completely fucking bomb right out of the gate is the RP5 delay. People basically only bought the Mini because they were all hyped up after over 2 weeks of teasing and didn't want to wait for the RP5. Expect sales to completely vanish once the 5 is actually out.

It just seems weird that I've seen so many GB Pockets that clearly have protective film on them, refurbishing Game Boys might be a normal thing for enthusiasts but presumably the average schmuck selling these for ~30 USD on Mercari wouldn't put that much work into them, right? Plus, I don't even think this unit has been shell-swapped, at least not going by how worn the stickers are on the back? It's honestly not a problem either way if the unit works, it just seems odd.

>Especially not used ones being sold 30 years after the fact.
And I mean, I remember people who always kept their worn-ass protective films on their Nokias back in the early 2000s, so this doesn't seem that unlikely.

First, what it does better than RGXX is DC, some GC, some Saturn, and running games XX can do better than XX like less frame drops in more taxing PS1 games and such. Second, the buttons, pads, and sticks are all top tier but I had the same issues. They're just too small for my hands, however I had no problem using the RP4P despite it having the same dpad. My advice is to get a grip for the 2S, someone I know has one and it definitely improves the experience. Also it would be more pocketable if the sticks didn't jut out so far, so yeah there is that.

Since we're talking Game Boy today, let's settle this /hhg/: which one has the better design, the Pocket or the Color?

Personally, I love how ergonomic the Color is, the whole unit feels specifically designed to be comfortably held, but I also think that the Pocket looks more cohesive and proportional, so it (and the Light by extension) might be my favorite Game Boy design overall. What about you, anons?

I don't have a dog in this race either way, since the SP was always my model of Game Boy, but I'm gonna have to say the Color. Purely based on the fact that it has molded-in lettering for B/A and Select/Start, as opposed to the printed-on text of the Pocket/OG. Stupid reasoning, yeah, but it's just what I prefer and what I'm used to.

Maybe he wants Windows compatibility with specific games? But if that poster is still here I really want to hammer this point into him, Windows is horrid on handhelds PCs. The OS not only feels sluggish with long boot times and no proper sleep mode like Linux, navigating with either the touch screen or a thumbstick is just miserable.
Even then it must be asked why that model of Windows PC specifically, over something like a GPD Win 4 or one of their other devices. Or even a used ASUS Ally to save money.

DSi is twice as powerful and supports SD cards, so you don't even need a flashcart for them (it helps for a couple of incompatible games and unbricking though). DS Lite has problematic hinges and - as an older model - is usually in a worse condition, screens in particular.
All XLs/LLs have IPS screens, no TN/IPS lottery 3DS-style.
DSi LL imported from Japan is probably the best deal available, installing a CFW on them translates the UI.

Which one is superior, pricing aside? Odin 2 or Odin Portal?

Odin 2:
>smaller
>faster battery recharge
>more aesthetic choices ("retro" clear plastic, multiple colors, gayming LEDs)
>easily swappable/customizable buttons and sticks

Odin Portal:
>bigger, better bezelless screen (OLED + 1 extra inch)
>bigger buttons and sticks (with better location), possibly customizable as well
>glass front, only 3 colors
>same weight despite the size

That 1 extra inch of screen is really tempting, but I'm afraid the overall size is getting a bit too close to Steam Deck territory (and I specifically avoided buying a Deck because I'd rather have something that's closer to a Switch Lite in size); maybe it won't be an issue because of the weight. Not bothered by the glass front yet I find the device pretty ugly and soulless compared to the basic Odin2. The clear purple model looks sexy as hell but I'm afraid I'll miss the bigger screen.

The only person I found who had anything remotely positive to say about it was Russ, but he's generally a shill for Anbernic slop. This, plus how suspiciously cheap the price tag is, should be enough of a warning to stay away from it.

That's the thing, when you're doing a generic slab or brick, 1:1 720x720 is perfectly fine, who cares it's not exact scaling. This falls flat when you're just cloning an existing handheld however. This would need to have the buttons perfectly down, feature -at least- a low-mid Android chip like T610 with enough juice and Vulkan support for shaders and feature an actual 800x720 panel for integer scaling.

>>11365834
I want it because of it's beastly nature. The onexplayer is actually most likely just going to be my main PC, but I can use that one for more triple A titles, media, entertainment and any office work that may be intensive.

As for the question about windows. I run a system-d less version of arch xfce on my main driver, an old laptop. I fucking hate Windows, but want a machine around that I can boot up with it for compatibility issues(admittedly few) and occasional tinkering. I also fully admit that the onexplayer is some impulsive shit on my part. But if obtained would essentially kill my bucket list when it comes to PCs. Gonna donate some of my older towers and all in ones i had been hoarding.

I'm starting to think Russ isn't even a shill. Go back and watch some of his older reviews where he has fundamental problems with the device like the Ayaneo Air. He'll still spend 90% of the review praising it then wrap up by saying "even though some flaws make the product objectively worse than everything else on the market, and even though I don't intend to use it after this review, it's still a good device." No company would pay for a review like that, but it's almost like he's afraid of being blunt and saying a product isn't worth the consumer's time. There's a reason why his comments are always peppered with those
>my wife heard the theme song in the other room and spontaneously combusted
comments, because quite literally all of his reviews leave the viewer with the impression that the device in question is right for someone, somwhere even if it sucks balls.

Valve is quite literally losing money on these things because they expect you to buy into their ecosystem and buy games on Steam that you otherwise wouldn't. If it weren't for the size and weight, there'd be no reason to buy any other handheld on the market. It's that good.

Can't seem to figure out how to sort .gdi files in Knulli. I can get m3u files for work for anything that's in the same folder as the m3u but pointing the m3u to folders doesn't seem to want to consolidate entries.

If I have RE:CV's English Translation patch for the Dreamcast then I have two .gdi folders, one for each of the disks. The setup I have is
>./path to folder itself/Code Veronica D1 Folder/RECV1.gdi
>./path to folder itself/Code Veronica D2 Folder/RECV2.gdi
>The extra blank space necessary for m3u's to work.
Doing it this way creates a brand new entry but doesn't remove the original disc entries for the game, so I have the original two disc entries and then the new .m3u entry. It works fine for Shenmue 2, FFVII's translation patch, etc, but I can't get it to work when the files themselves are in a folder. I can't take them out of the folder due to filename issues.

I got my mini in the other day and it's pretty good overall. The unit itself feels solid and I do actually like the glass front though I'd probably hate it if I got the black model. The sticks and the Dpad feels great but the buttons are kinda hollow feeling kinda like the analogue pocket I hear there's a simple mod to fix this so I'll do that soon. The screen could stand to be a bit bigger but I haven't had trouble reading anything on it it'd just be nice to have. The colors look great's you'd expect with an OLED panel but I did notice some ghosting while playing Rondo of Blood but maybe that's a settings issue. Games that I care about run great so far, played through a few stages of Ape Escape 3 and played a bunch of Saturn stuff without major issues, its great having a handheld this small that can run Beetle Saturn. Overall I like it better than my RG35XXSP and maybe about as much as my Pocket, maybe more if they can fix the weird problem with shaders.
