>What game is this?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock_Tower_(1995_video_game)

Clock Tower is a Super Famicom game released by Human in 1994. It's a point and click adventure that plays like a horror film. Unlike some other survival horror games, Clock Tower does not focus on shooting creatures or using violence, but rather uses the player's surroundings to hide and escape while solving puzzles and following the twisting storyline. The main character is usually quite helpless compared to the villains, so the main emotional connection to the game is the fear of being discovered or captured.

>What is Retro Game of the Week?
It's a get together of people who want to play and discuss retro games each week. Each week a thread is created for a new game. This week’s game discussion will last until Sunday 10/20/13. Feel free to discuss anything you want related to the current game.

>What kind of games get chosen?
Anything in the /vr/ catalog. Original OP took recommendations from the threads and ultimately chose the games himself. Someone tried a voting system this week but the thread either died or was deleted. Feel free to discuss future games and methods for choosing games in this thread as well.

Week 1 – DuckTales
Week 2 – For the Frog the Bell Tolls
Week 3 – Clock Tower (Current)

There is a sequel to this week’s game for Playstation that is also called Clock Tower in the western release. It might be cool to continue with that next week.

>Emulators allowed?
Of course. Play the games in whichever way you prefer.

>Where can I get emulator though?
https://sites.google.com/site/vrgotw/home

Have fun!

This games pretty cool. Mapping this mansion out as I go. I might post it when I'm done, if there's interest.

There seem to be some things that only happen if you do certain things. I can only get the key for the west wing if I collapse the main hall's upstairs corridor and then check the box in the room with the TV. Has anyone noticed similar things? There also seem to be certain safe havens from the scissors dude; I've only found one so far in the barn with the car.

Can we get some information sharing on the go?

It's not SUPER long. Most of time is spent exploring the mansion. After that once you find items it's pretty obvious where to use them. Also, depending on what order you go to certain rooms or do certain things you become locked out of some set pieces/endings. The last section of the game is also extremely straightforward.

Clock Tower had tons of great design ideas and was original in gameplay and theme. However it was ruined by flawed gameplay mechanics.

The encounters are too redundant. It's basically "oh, he's here again, I'll just go hide to one of the only two hiding places that do work again and again".

The health system is terrible. If you want to stand a chance in encounters you need to NOT run most of the times during the game. That only makes a very slow and boring pacing even more boring and slower unnecessarly. Not to mention having to wait quite a long time for health to regenerate.

That whole slow pace and boringness isn't helped by the total lack of music outside of action scenes. Don't call that "atmosphere", there is nothing going on, it's just empty, dull.

Also there is the typical point&click bullshit puzzles : senseless puzzles, which equals "try everything with everything, every combinaison possible, without thinking, because you know the answer won't make sense anyway".
To that is added flaws in that design itself: in quite a few moments, you have to check several things successively in a precise order to solve the puzzle. While, it's supposed to make sense, it only makes things more complicated than they should be : for example the puzzle with the bird nest and the box. You arrive at a dead end with the box in front of you first, and then the nest. So, what do you do, you check the box. Well, you can't interact with it. Then what do you do? You check the nest. Nope, nothing. So you go out of the room because there was nothing, right? Wrong. You have to check the nest FIRST and THEN the box to be able to interract with them; and if you, say, check the nest, leave the room, come back, and check the box, that won't work either. It has to be successively. This design is terribly flawed and is applied several times throughout the game.

A very interesting game in its ideas and originality, but terribly flawed especially in gameplay. Horribly overrated.

While the Wonderswan version is unninteresting (same game but in black&white), the PC version is probably the best simply due to how you play with the mouse. The graphics are slightly different too. Pic related.

I enjoy the tenseness of this game. I feel like I'm making good progress to an ending, but I don't know if it's the 'true' ending.

the best ending has only one other survivor, the blonde chick I think
if you see the monster in the basement, then you have entered a point of no return for dead ends and bad endings.
sometimes mirrors will make you calm, but other times a demon will try to pull you in!

And as you thought, the game is very much about when you do some things. Arino found that the best ending involved not finding someone dead very early on, I think it was the blonde chick in the shower. Part of the best ending involves not checking that room early on, IIRC

Sorry if my info is incomplete or inaccurate, I don't remember much of the playthrough.

>> No.1137545

Alright, here is what we have gathered so far. Correct me if I am wrong in anything:

>Basic stuff
A: hold to bring up the inventory.
B: mash to escape scissor man and traps.
X: stop whatever you were doing and stand still.
Y: check stuff, walk. Double press to run.
L/R: run.

Quick start begins the game in the main hall after everyone has disappeared. I don't know how that affects endings but I am willing to bet it at least locks you out of some.

The order in which you do stuff determines what you can and cannot do later in the game. Try different combinations and routes. Sometimes seemingly innocuous things like talking to someone or turning the lights on/off is the difference between life and death.

The game autosaves whenever you go through a door. If you die and continue, you start right after entering the last door.

>Health

Running depletes health, which you can see by the color of Jennifer's portrait's background and her expression. Blue is high, beige is ok, orange is low and red is very low. Standing still for a while causes Jeniffer to kneel down and regenerate health, but takes a long time to fully replenish it. Also, it only works if you manually make her stop by ordering her to move or check something and cancelling it with X. It will not work when she stops after going through a door or recovering from checking something.

However, health only seems to matter during encounters with scissor man and when you fall into a trap. You can win these events by mashing B. It seems that less health just means you have to mash for longer. Therefore, walking to conserve health seems pointless or at lest less advantageous than running to save real life time.

Part 2 incoming...

>> No.1137549

>>1137545
Scissor man

If he touches you while you are kneeling or facing away from him, he instantly kills you. When he is after you, you can't walk, only run, which is another reason why walking is rather pointless. Also, Jeniffer will randomly trip and fall and lose health when scissor man is after her. Finally, you cannot interact with anything when you have a tail, only take doors and stairs.

I know of three ways to lose him. First is the barn. Wait for him to enter, take the ladder and drop it to the floor, he will eventually leave. Can only be done once as you can't put the ladder up again. Second is a corridor in the reddish area where you use a plank to bridge a gap to on the floor. Lure him there, Jeniffer will remove the plank and he will fail the jump. Pretty funny and damn satisfying too. Worked for me twice in a row, I think it can be used indefinitely. Third is after the encounter in the pool. As you can't interact with the box I knocked him over and crawled into the hole again. After that for some reason he was gone.

>Parrot room

Check the furniture to get the perfume. If you check the parrot he will peck you, reducing your health and won't ever shut the fuck up. Checking the mirror when the lights are on will kill you. With the lights off apparently it's ok.

>Doll room

Check the box under the doll next to the door for a key. To escape the possessed doll, lure it next to a wall and run past it when Jeniffer's portrait flashes indicating it is about to strike. It will fly into the wall and break to pieces.

>Items
This is were I found some of the items. Locations may vary depending on the playthrough but I've only noticed this happening with the keys.

>Rock
Pile of rubble left to the starting hall. Use it to break the weak section on the wall of that same room and gain acess to the courtyard.

Part 3 to come...

>> No.1137550

>>1137549
>Insecticide
On the left hall, go upstairs and enter the unlocked door to the left. Enter the room in that corridor, the insecticide is on the floor. Use it to kill the cockroaches on the kitchen.

>Dress
On the left hall, go upstairs and enter the unlocked door to the left. Enter the room in that corridor, check the shelves and then the box, Jeniffer will get to the other side and fetch the dress from the chest.

>Rope

On the left hall, go upstairs and enter the unlocked door to the left. Enter the room in that corridor, the rope is on the floor. Dunno where to use it.

>Endings I've managed to get

D: quick start, went left, got the rock, went into the courtyard, talked to Mr. Barrows, moved the box and entered the room. Went left until I got to the kitchen, checked everything except the cockroach storage, got the ham, left to the barn, got the car key and checked the car with the key thrice. In this ending, Jeniffer flees with the car and survives. Neutral ending? You-are-a-pussy ending?

H: normal start, talked to each friend twice, went after Ms. Mary, came back to main hall, pressed the light switch on the right (lights turned on), got up the stairs, floor colapsed. Went left, got the rock, went to next corridor, entered the room with the TV, box was empty, checked everything except the TV and the painting, went to the next room, got the perfume, checked the portrait and left (didn't bother with the parrot, mirror or light switch). Went into the left hall, cutman smashed through the glass with Ann's corpse, fled to the barn and he lost me. Fled in the car again but this time cutman hid in it and apparently kills Jeniffer on the road. Bad ending, motherfucker.

In early 2012, Chris Darril revealed that Remothered is currently being redesigned with modern 3D graphics, new characters, and a freestyle control system similar to that of Haunting Ground, Siren: Blood Curse and surely near to Silent Hill: Shattered Memories . Chris Darril is still directing, though some story elements have been changed to make a commercial release possible.

Pic related, it's where I am and what items I have. I have accessed both rooms, fought off scissorkid twice in this corridor (once he fell down the hole on the left in my pic, the other was just weird after he came out of the box in the storage room). I have read the journals and examined my "dad", as well as scoured both rooms and the hallway for anything to use items on and tried everything I currently have on everything several times.

If there's a way to get out of this part, PLEASE tell me.

>What should we play next week?
Clock Tower (PS1) runs well on my '09 macbook and Wii, so I'm sure anyone could get it working. However, this early on in GotW, it may not be worthwhile to play such similar titles two weeks in a row (especially point and click). After two weeks of scavenger hunting with FtFtBT and Clock Tower, I think we should go with a more action driven game that places emphasis on controls and gameplay. We could still keep with the 2spooky theme for October if people want

Personally, I think it'd be cool to see what the reaction to SNES Clock Tower is, and if it's good enough, run the ps1 one next week. The ps1 CT is fantastic, and really cheesy voice acting to boot.

I finished my first playthrough. How do you know what ending you got?

I killed the fat baby demon, took the elevator to 3rd floor, flipped some switches and Scissor Man fell, Ms. Mary killed my friend and came after me. Thankfully I saved those crows earlier in the game and they returned the favor.

Is it worth playing again for more endings?

One way I found to lose Scissorman is to the left of the shower where you can find a dead girl, go up the stairs and to the left to get to the area with the insecticide. If he's chasing you as you come in, you can throw a can that's on the ground at him which causes the gas to fill the room. He runs out and you have to as well because it hurts you, but you can immediately reenter.

Next week's GotW will be Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Hopefully announcing early will give people a little time to get whichever version of the game they want or get emulation all set up.

Besides PS1, it's available in a bunch of formats as >>1142827 said. I will start the new thread Sunday morning.

Also, please throw out ideas for deciding each week's game. It would be awesome if we could make it more of a community effort and I definitely don't want to be responsible each week. This, playing unheard of games is cool but there are a lot of options in the /vr/ catalog. Just because you have played a game, or started a thread about that game, and consider it well known doesn't mean everyone else has.
