Some shitty keyboards have a problem with limited number of buttons that they will register as being depressed at one time. I found that using the numpad usually lets you depress more buttons at once. Also, using the numpad puts your arms spaced evenly and the keyboard centered in front of you, but that probably is just my OCD kicking in.

I'm glad I have a Model M keyboard now and don't have to deal with the button problem anymore.

Used to always play old keyboard-only PC games with a similar setup, so it naturally carried over when I began emulating. It may look awkward to those only used to WASD+Mouse, what with your hands being close together, but I've grown fond of playing like this.

It's surprisingly comfy too. Left hand is always slanted to the left in this position, and the placement of the keys accomodate for this. The A and B button are also within easy reach for playing with the right hand only, which is ideal for turn-based rpgs since those tend to use little else aside from X/Start to access the menu.

For some games, like platformers which use B to jump and Y to dash, I rotate the A, B and Y buttons so that B is bound to Ctrl and Y to shift. When a game uses the R button excessively, I tend to bind it to 0-numpad.

>>1127682
I guess it's just neurological programming or some shit. I've been playing 2D games this way since the first time I touched video games. 3D games like FPSes have always used WASD plus peripheral keys and mouse.

WASD is just intuitive in 3D space, while arrow keys are intuitive in 2D space.

They mappings in the picture aren't really absolute. I generally remap them in the emulator if the game doesn't have in-game key map options (since X is for left index finger, it's "shoot" for Metroid but "jump" in Mario).

I used to play cross-handed >>1127452 for the longest time since my big brother always hogged the WASD side in two player games. It was only about few years ago when I tried to find a more comfortable layout for Spelunky and first ended up with ASD-QWE rows for the left hand. After that I some day looked at my arcade stick and thought that having the buttons in a curve allows you to press them with all four fingers at once and is much more comfortable. Then I looked my keyboard and realized the answer was right there. I guess those with amerikkan keyboards could use shift-ASD or alt-CVB or something.

I don't get it, do you people seriously play with the d-pad on arrows? I mean, maybe you don't even have threeshitty controller, maybe. But if you're playing on a keyboard - do you seriously set directions on arrow keys? Fucking seriously?

I mean, even if you never played on a real console, you still are supposed to use WASD for movement and directions for all post 1995 PC games. Left hand = movement, right hand = action. What the fuck sort of simple people are you?

But before '95 was 20+ years ago, and since then even home computer games used the concept of movement on left, action on right. Meanwhile, console games, which OP is talking about, have ALWAYS used that.

Console games used joysticks or paddles. Pads only came up during the mid 80s. Op is talking about emulation so it's normal that not everyone is used to the original control scheme.
I wouldn't say every game after 95 used that concept and the ones that did still left room for changes.

A cheap USB gamepad. Before that I couldn't even entertain the idea of playing roms. Keyboard controls are so uncomfortable and awkward. I don't know how people do it. I can never remember what key does what and it starts getting painful fast. I'm just too used to a controller.

PC games typically rely on a mouse in the right hand, which lends itself more for movement than for actions. Even in a FPS WASD setup you will use your right hand for additional commands like weapon selection and jumping while your mouse handles moving the field of view and shooting.

Not really. Your dominant hand is much more suited for handling lots of different inputs at once; four-key movement is much simpler by comparison. It's the dominant hand you should worry about making full use of, not necessarily that movement belongs on the left. But it's just silly to switch your hands around when everything else in your hobby does it another way.

The worst part is how fucking lazy some PC game developers have gotten about keyboard support. I mean it's always been a thing and somewhat understandable in Japan to not give a shit about keyboard control since everyone has a controller, but Cave Story's influence in the modern scene has created so fucking many braindead Western developers now who force you to use that fucking awful ZXCV + arrows setup without even a way to change keys.

That's such a god damn uncomfortable set up. I have no idea why so many devs adopted it and out right refuse to have custom mapping support.

>> No.1129660

Hah, it's funny that that works on a keyboard because the actual six-face-button idea on a controller is terrible. Your one thumb simply cannot service all those buttons to the degree that your other digits could.

Because they're lazy and retarded. It's ridiculously simple to code button mappings into the game. It's probably the easiest part of input handling. How can a game not support this? Developer retardation is the only possible explanation.

You know what's worse? Games that assume you WANT to use your controller if it's connected, disabling the keyboard altogether. No, I don't want to use my controller, thank you (no, fuck you). Please show proper keyboard keys in the HUD again. At least have the decency of adding a -disable-pad command line option.

Even worse is games that, on top of all that, don't allow me to turn off the goddamn vibration function. I'm looking at you H.A.W.X. Fuck you. Had to wrap my 360 controller inside a 360 controller emulator so I could manually disable that shit.

I could go on for days; I've got a HOTAS flight stick as well which causes me infinite amounts of pain due to shitty game support, but yeah.

I prefer keyboards for pretty much everything; only a few games feel more comfortable with the 360 controller. Sonic Racing Transformed comes to mind. Games that don't let me remap input make me sick, but I'm still good enough to play with any set up. I just get used to it. Anything that deviates from >>1127645 just isn't comfortable though.

I recently saw the appeal of a flight stick. Analog throttle control is just priceless, I got pissed when I saw that quite a few games have shit support for it; pinning the throttle = pressing W. The stick itself is a lot better for maneuvering than the mouse, but much worse for aiming.

Look dude, I played on ZSNES since before it had a windowed mode, with nothing but Arrow keys, z-v for A-Y, and A and S for L and R.

That is the only REMOTELY comfortable position I have found for SNES gaming without a controller.

I finally buckled down and bought a Sega Saturn USB adapter, and use that for my Saturn/Pre-Saturn games.

Sometimes, the controller is the best bet.
