>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Powkiddy/Retroid official websites

>Best Brands
Retroid (Well built, powerful, but $100-200 range), Anbernic (Balanced price, power and build quality, avoid the RG Nano), Powkiddy (Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes), Miyoo (One hit wonder), TrimUI: (Good build quality, shitty software, good price).

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 300$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Before you buy
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering. You better have bare basic desktop knowledge on how to unzip files and put them in folders. We are not here to teach you how.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

My parents are travelling to São Paulo next week and they want to give me a chinkheld. Any advice on finding it? I found like 5 stores that sell it on Brazilian ebay that are physical there. It's a trimui smart pro but I also accept recommendations that run up to psp. Original

Most people compare it to Tekken. You have a punch, a kick, and a guard. There's no hadokens or Shun Goku Satsus or Fatalities, a lot of it is more knowing how and when to dodge or strike using your backdash and forward dash. Grabbing feels good, you can also stomp your opponent if you time it properly (but not with Akira for whatever reason). If you've played Sonic the Fighters, it's a little like that. There's a 2D Genesis version that's always on compilations but the 32X port is genuinely good and feels like an early Saturn or PS1 game imo.

If you like 2D fighters try Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha and EX 2 for PS1, it is basically just Street Fighter in 3D.

I had the 35xx and my hand felt cramped. It was the first time using that form factor and I’m wondering how the GBA SP I had as a kid would feel now. I definitely think those vertical handhelds are by far the best looking emulation handhelds but I just can’t justify playing on one over a vertical. The 28xx looks decent too for a horizontal but it’s probably too small

One of my GBAs is crashing periodically. It seems most common when Gameboy or GBC games are being run, when I move the console or possibly put pressure on parts of the shell.
I suspect that the issue is weakened solder on the cartridge slot, but are there any other obvious things it could be? All caps look fine, there is no obvious damage to anything on the board. Just figured I would float it here before I go reflowing the cart port.

For what it's worth I thought this thread was just for any handheld that runs retro games, be it retro handhelds (DMG, GG, Lynx), slightly newer handhelds that can still run retro (GBA, the early DS's with the GBA cartridge slot at a stretch) or modern handhelds that emulate old games.

Plus' d-pad is okay, but verticals aren't great for shoulder button intensive games.
28xx's d-pad is solid, but some people have problems with its size and buttons. Great pocketer, I love it.
SP has a design flaw with its buttons where they'll pierce through the membranes and into the domes. Enjoyable format and feels like a real product in comparison by just being a SP clone but symmetrical, but it's just doomed.
Haven't tried H but its sticks are crippled on software level (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T1hXHVbFKk&t=531s)), there's a fix incoming but it hasn't been implemented yet AFAIK so no telling how (if) it'll work out. It also utilizes the old 35xx's d-pad which I hear isn't stellar.
These will all do PS1, but hardly do any N64, DC and (especially) Saturn despite the marketing.

My favorite is RP2S. I'm told the d-pad is somewhat similar to the Vita's. The price can be relatively high but it's really nice, great little speakers, flawless sticks and enough juice for DC and some actual full speed Smash Bros Melee matches given tweaking. Some people need the grip, I'm good without it.

I suggest sticking to horizontals as you don't come across as a primarily JRPG player. Stick to USB to USB C charging too, seems to be an issue with the C specs on all those.

Hello and welcome to he hhg thread where merchants attempt to shame you into buying/thinking that all these handhelds released weeks apart from each other and of constant questionable quality are what the cool kids are doing and you should too and damn you if you say otherwise. You cursed fool. How could you not buy 100 different handhelds all from the same place in constant cash grabs. Also you're gay if you save money and play on your phone or a spare phone. ;) (Am I one of us yet?)

Anyways unlike my counter parts. I know a few have been gems. Miyoo mini blew minds. A lot of folks like that analogue pocket. Retroid pockets have been hot since they came out and improving aside from the occasional dud or less-lustre edition. Any steel/aluminum case anything has probably survived longer than plastic counter parts I figure. Lot of folks love the Odin. Lot of folks dig the pc handhelds. Aa far as controllers go. Anything Gamesir is legit. Except for the first usb-c model where the usbc was on the wrong side that was awful. Galileo g8 is basically xbox quality phone controller. For me though; I never bought any of the handhelds; they just fascinted me. I've enjoyed watching the progression from the winners/gems. I played a fuck ton of retro games on an old phone with controllers. Worked great. Now I have a steam deck. So I'm pretty much set from here on out when it comes to what I can play retro wise in bed or on a big screen with friends. Controls threw me off a bit at first honestly but they're actually pretty intuitive; there's just a leaening curve. I am preparing to dee dive into tinkering with the deck so as to get the utnost conpatibility/performance/ and soon emulation going on it. I'll keep ya posted.

>> No.11273086

>>11272460
Ngl at first I thought the right stick being a dpad was fucking stupid, but thinking about it, very few retro games rely on precise rstick movements, and it'd make n64 games that use the c buttons for things other than movement a lot more comfortable.

>>11272520
I pre-ordered the 2S and it took about a month and a half between the shipping starting and me getting my system. That said, IIRC the main reason it took so long was because it was the first time they'd been using dual injected buttons and they got fucked up, so they had to delay to make new ones.

Common misconception, but being held in place like that doesn't cause drift. It's more a matter of sensors grinding down over time that cause the sensors to be less and less accurate. That's why hall sticks are believed to be drift proof, they use no-contact magnetic sensors that don't rub against one another, so in theory, no drift.

Yes and no. You can paywall an emulator, but that emulator can't use licensed tech. Yuzu wasn't just in trouble because paid emulator, they were in trouble because their website/discord/etc came with instructions on how to pirate Nintendo's authentication keys. Most other emulators that require licensed files will include a guide on how to legally extract it from a system you own, which gives them deniability, but what Yuzu did was the equivalent of practically putting pirate bay links in the description

My last two purchases were the R35S and R36S a year ago, R36S is neat for sub $50 N64 and DreamCast emulation, but the RG28XX is gonna be a dedicated 90s retro handheld for GBA, SNES, PS1, etc for me.

...But I still want to order a Powkiddy V10 as well cause I'm a vertislut. But after paying about $50 Canadian for an RG28XX that hasn't arrived yet it's hard to justify paying $55 CAD for a V10 despite my impulses.

I already got an RG35XX as my first chinkheld, and despite enjoying its GameBoy Pocket form factor it just isn't quite what I want to play GBA roms on. The best device I have ever enjoyed GBA games on is the original phat NDS bottom half. I wanna make a "GBmacro" out of a phat DS because of how fucking perfect its dpad and face buttons are, nothing has ever compared since, even the New 3DS. A real GBMicro is just 3small5me, but the RG28XX seems like the perfect form factor and size for GBA games.

I gotta say, in terms of ergonomics and form factor, my favourite systems of all time are the GameBoy Color, phat NDS, and the SF-2000. If ONLY I could get the SF-2000, but with the RG35XX +/RG35XX SP/RG35XX H's hardware...

Seriously, idiot? There's a specific reason why most of these devices run Android when wanting to emulate beyond PS1.

>> No.11277325

>>11277298
Because Android gives you more options for an ARM system. Keep in mind that the linux installed on some systems aren't the same type you'd have on a desktop or a steamdeck, it's limited to apps made specifically for the ARM branch, so you can't just take a Linux game and throw it onto a Linux handheld without designing a port

The reason the new RG35XXSP colors suck is because they probably took the default red, blue, and green dyes from whatever dye manufacturer they had a deal with, and didn't bother to actually blend interesting colors themselves. (That would take time and quality control)

They look cheap because they are cheap. That's why the colors look plain and gay
