Best Single Player WADS of 2013 (so far) - If you want pure vanilla maps go check this list!

Now, two things.

1. Yes, I know I used a picture that represents the Ultimate Doom poster using ClipArt and Comic Sans while we're supposed to be celebrating the 19th annyversary of Doom II, no need to point out that, champ. I used it because someone asked it to be used for the next thread and I kindly agreed with him

2.-While the new release date has been set, don't get your hopes up and expect it to be bugged up as hell, since I (and many others) expect v19 not to be finaltested by the community for many reasons we may know already.

Also, if that anon is still around, please, whoever was mantaining that Best Single Player WAD list, report immediately so we can add more WADS to that list

Quake (and quake II) had really goofy ways of preserving and playing music, basically all the music is stored on the cd instead of within pak files

So to get it to play you either need a quake cd, or direct the source port you are using to a folder that contains all of the music (note not all source ports have support for one or both of these methods and simply cannot play the music whatsoever

Altern death animations have been a thing since 2007. Kinsie's Doom Enhanced is a good example

http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?p=298432

Here's an excerpt from the Zombieman's DECORATE

Death:
POSS G 3 A_Jump (128, "Death2")
POSS H 5
POSS I 5 A_Scream
POSS J 5 A_NoBlocking
POSS K 5
POSS L 1 A_SpawnItem ("BodyThud", 0, 0, 0, 0)
POSS L -1
stop
Death2:
POSS V 5
POSS W 5 A_Scream
POSS X 5 A_NoBlocking
POSS Y 5
POSS Z 1 A_SpawnItem ("BodyThud", 0, 0, 0, 0)
POSS Z -1
stop

As you can see, it's as simple as adding a line of text, followed by the necessary frames for the secondary animation sequence, of course.

I know this is Shotguns 2 : Rise of the Super Shotgun but are there any challenging wads where you are expected to use the chainsaw/berserk pack on anything stronger than a horde of (pink)demons?

I am no pro, but I've been playing for so long that I can chainsaw groups of revenants without ever taking a punch and I really enjoy monster infighting, so it annoys me how much spare ammo these wads give me.
8 out of 10 times I only whip out a BFG because I cant carry any more cells and dont want them going to waste. 1 out of 10 are cheap arch-vile placements and other surprise flavours like 20-revenants-suddenly-teleport-behind-you.
Scythe 2 is the epitome of this shit. It is indeed a fun and challenging wad, but holy fuck does it give you ammo. Before I left map 24 I counted fifteen large cell packs, nine rocket boxes and six shell boxes lying around unused. And that was with 0% secrets...

IDCLEVing usually just means I will be missing the SSG and backpack upgrades for a while, which most of the time is annoying rather than challenging.

So far my favorites are Equinox and Suspended in Dusk.

And I agree, sometimes wads turn out to be very trivial once you grab the BFG and there's fucktons on cells laying around the ground.

Believe it or not, some people actually enjoy Doom the way they remember it. Also, most 'purists' I know do enjoy mods, but only map sets with vanilla rules, such as no jumping or vertical aim. It is just preference, and in my case is a preference driven by nostalgia.

I have never heard any 'purists' call themselves a purist. It is a term that is shoved down the throats of anyone who plays Doom with default settings. If there was a massive benefit or convenience that is worth going out of your way to use the DOS version over the many sourceports available on modern systems, then I am sure more people would, but there isn't. The gritty graphics can be simulated on many sourceports, the standard game rules can be enforced on many sourceports, plays smoother on more modern systems, and mods are more conveniently accessible.

First of all, there isnt even an official non-sliding-through-bars + no rocketjumping speedrun record. All the pros abuse the shit out of it and no one cares.
Secondly, I said mouselooking + rocketjumping on map 16, so obviously I fired the rocket at the ground to cross that giant river of lava. No speedrun allows mouselooking, manually jumping, etc.
Third, fuck you. I am doing this for fun. The only way to survive in nightmare is to bolt through the levels, so naturally I am trying to speedrun them. Also, before you mention it, the only way I can afford to rocket my feet off is when I have an invulnerability globe.

Sure, they don't scream horribly and become charred corpses that you can then flip off (though you can call them stupid if you're that desperate), but it's hardly a new thing. I actually played through it twice because I ended up missing the blue and red keycard sections my first run. Good god that cyberdeamon placement is fucking terrifying. So many enemies to deal with plus you have to listen out for his loud footsteps wandering the halls. I think the highlight of it was bum rushing it to the other side and getting completely surrounded by pinkies and hell knights. I thought I was so insanely screwed then I backed into a BFG9K on accident. I spammed my way out, blood pumping. I also love that you can get an infight between the cyberdemon and the archvile if you're careful. I really enjoyed the red and blue sections, but I feel like they might be too easy to miss. On the second run, I turned back when I opened the hell portal, only to be greated with two archviles respawning everything. Bricks were shat. Bricks were fucking shat. Outstanding map, 10/10.

And great mapping, that final room was HARD! I needed a second run to keep the ammo and the medikits saved until the right moment, you could put less monsters or put more ammo, you decide.
Overall I give an honest 9/10

This is what it's supposed to look/sound like.
(sorry about the voice, couldn't find anything else)

I'm running on a Windows 7 machine.
I've got Zdoom, GZdoom, and other stuff ran with ZDL.

So far as I can tell, there are several versions of this thing out, all requiring different versions of Doom, with 20th century sourceports, and some of them are divided into two parts... it's a nightmare.
On top of that, rather than put the whole thing in a wad, the nature of this tc requires all these different files.

I've got it running like a pic I'm about to upload. The player graphics (your gun, your face, etc) and music are unmodified. Everything else seems to work (sounds, textures, etc.)

Since atmosphere is half the point of this TC, I'd like to be able to play it as it was intended.
Does anyone know how to accomplish that?

Firstly, this game is built around suspense and atmosphere,
you can completely destroy this by using cheats to find out in
advance what everything is. (ooh, I wanna see an alien, Light
Amp cheat, degreelessness, happy ammo etc.) RESIST THE
TEMPTATION! The first time you play this will be the best. Not
knowing what is around the next corner is what doom is all
about, in other words, when you use cheats, there is only one
possible outcome - you complete the level, there is absolutely
no challenge, which means there is no FUN.
As I said, the first time you play a level is the best, I've
put a lot of work into this conversion and I require that you
enjoy it :-), these are a few basic requirements
1) pull the curtains and turn out the lights
2) turn down the monitor brightness so that what is meant to
be dark is actually dark.
3) set aside at least an hour when there will be little
distracting background noise.
4) Set the music to about half the volume of the sound FX (so
it's there, but not consciously there)
5) read the rest of this file (-:
6) Play until your nervous system is overriding your motor
control and you can't stop shaking long enough to calm your
heart...

Doomworld: Speaking of which, is it true that you were approached by Dreamworks Interactive and offered a position on the team creating the game "Trespasser?" If so, why did you turn it down?

Justin: I got quite a few offers from various companies, most of which I turned down because I wanted to finish my degree, but there was also a conflict between my not wishing to relocate across the world to somewhere where I know no-one, and my wishing to be more than a little cog in a big machine - to have at least reasonable creative input. The problem with this is that unlike a lot of assigned tasks, creatively working with others requires a lot of contact and communication. Which in turn works
best when you’re in the same room as the people you’re brainstorming (or whatever) with.
Anyway, back to Dreamworks, I don’t remember the offer, but I read an article where they mentioned that the reason I declined was that I wanted to finish my degree, which I guess confirms that they did ask me :-)
(However, for the record, I don’t think they mentioned "Trespasser", or a definite game concept. That would probably have been mentioned later.)

>As it was nearing completion, I did think it was better than almost everything else out there at the time, so I thought it would have a comfortably warm reception, but I was a little off the mark…
(In the week following the anticipated release of Doom2, more of the newsgroup discussion was about Aliens-TC than Doom2). I wanted feedback about A-TC, so had my email address pretty prominently placed in it. The day after I released it, I spent five hours answering email. That really scared me - I just didn’t have the time to spend all day on email. (To anyone who wrote to me and got a short reply, or no reply - sorry - I was swamped)
Four years later, it still surprises me. Recently I decided to buy a computer game magazine, (something I hadn’t done for years) and come across an article about the upcoming game "Trespasser", which cited Aliens-TC as an inspiration for some of their game design. For a game to be influencing games four years later, in the computer industry, seems pretty amazing.

Is it not? No, seriously. Did it bring anything new to the table in terms of gameplay? Even in terms of narrative System Shock was there first but you just couldn't run that on an average PC, but with a slightly modified quake engine you could.
The game itself is mediocre, I can't explain why it got popular except for PC gaming itself was at its peak. Maybe you can?

Gauss jumping is a variation of rocket jumping, and Quake already did the whole mod thing (and multiplayer).

Each individual element of HL was probably done before in some way, but not all of them put together. HL changed the way FPS' were made.

The smooth level loading as >>1130338 said combined with no cutscenes at all in the entire game, memorable and unique enemies, decent level design, pretty good puzzle and platform design (except for Xen lol), and it was actually pretty spooky and did the horror part well. Whereas system shock was also spooky you were never really isolated so it wasn't as spooky.

Conversely the things that made system shock not as popular at the time were the maintenance and breaking mechanics for weaponry, which were very tedious and not based on anything in the real world.

I just never liked vertical mouselook in doom. A lot of levels had enemies at really high spots that you couldn't see normally but were able to see when you had it enabled, so it sometimes ruined the element of surprised/made the game much easier.

The best examples I can think of are the "city" levels in Doom 2 where all of the hitscan enemies were placed high in the buildings, and you had to be a good distance away from them in order to have a good enough auto-aim angle to shoot them. Yet with vertical mouselook, you can walk to the building, look straight up and launch a rocket and kill them.
