I don't use names relevant to me, and I never really have I used to never use custom names for my characters, but in the past 5 years or so I've been taking the first letter of the character's class or species (if Pokemon or DQM) and pulling up a site for names and picking something nice that starts with that same letter.

I think my Etrian Odyssey 4 party consists of Lars, Faye, Dahlia, Marietta and Rin.

I name them after their role.
If there's only one namable character I use my own, except for romantic games where I use Anon.

I usually name characters after random people; an average party might consist of GaryOak, Batman, Lil'B, and JEEEAAAN.

If I get to name pairs of characters that are often together, like in a tactics RPG, I'm a big fan of naming two girls Envy and Spite, or Sam and Ella.

As far as my limited Dragon Quest knowledge takes me, they're all pretty much the same, minus graphical updates and maybe some bugfixes and a retranslation. Play whichever one appeals to you.

I remember my father would name RPG characters after members of our family. Which, amusingly enough, lead to Eiko being named Logan later on. (I am male.)

I initially followed suit but later on I left the names as default. Incidentally, RPGs were instrumental in teaching me to read. I learned how to because I wanted to play them.

I give them names that are like 80s action movie names. Or I just make the occasional unbearable pun.

Historically, I would name the first character after myself, the first female character after my sister and the remainder after my friends.

More often than not, the first female character and the main male character fall in love with each other, which makes it awkward for me because then I have my sister telling me how much she LOVES ME loves me. That's why I've kind of dropped this practice.

Default names because I'm boring.
If the main character/friends have no names by default, I just make up stuff appropriate to the setting i.e. Shiguta for Japan settings, Alec Smith for humans in other settings, Gnaras for Dwarves, etc.

Main character is always Crispy regardless of th game. The first girl to enter the party is always Laya, named after Laya from Phantasy Star III, and everyone else is just default name.

In plot-centric RPGs, default names.
In shit like Earthbound or Pokemon I choose a theme and run with it.

In my last run through of Soul Silver I named everything named after Black Civil Rights activists then proceeded to make art of my Pokemon with their faces.

I tend to name the mage/clerics type people after the male family/friends and fighters/rogue after my female family/friends. Even if the mage is a female I'll still name her Matt. My friends actually thinks it's funny and normally just nods and let me do what I can.

MC's best friend - Buddy
Everybody else - Default or something I make up on the spot

The decision I always consider the longest in WRGPs is if I should use my real name for the MC or make up something that fits the setting.

These were all defaults. I find that makes it even more hilarious.

I also need to finish more promotion quests.

If I know who the characters are ahead of time, once in a while I'll keep the names but switch them around. Screws with your head if you quit playing for a while and then come back to that file.

For the most part, I just kept to their default names. For the SNES version of Final Fantasy 6, I tended to at least put their names in lower case so it didn't seem like people were shouting out the names. Why they felt the need to go CAPSLOCK on every playable character is beyond me.

Also, I like calling Frog from Chrono Trigger Glenn, because screw it, not like anyone's going to believe you're actually Glenn anyway. Plus, it's more awesome than just going around as "Frog" too.

When I was a child, in the NES-SNES era I would name them after people I knew. By the end of the SNES era there started to definitely be suggested ("Butz? Seriously WTF" - Twelve Year Old Me) and even forced names.

When FF7 came out I was an adult, working at Babbage's. I left their names as-is.

When Wild Arms came out, I didn't take it seriously and I named everybody obscenities but then it pulled me in and I ended up pissing myself off as I was grinding to get to that name changing location to make them default.

I have a four-fighter FF1 game on my baby's iPod Touch and they all have computer-suggested names.

In Pokemon, I've always used ironic and pseudo-humorous names for everyone, including the creatures themselves (yes, I was that guy who named my Metapod PENIS).

For every other game, I would either use default names if they had them, or I would try to come up with something original. I never name a character after myself, because I don't use the character as an avatar of myself. That's why I don't mind playing a female protag if the design is better than the male.

I used to name my characters exactly like OPs picture. One time I decided to deviate from that slightly named a female character after my cousin. That character turned out to be a love interest in the story.

I use all default names in JRPGs because a JRPG has never been able to make me feel like it's a game about me; it always just feels like it's about the characters the devs designed. Earthbound is the exception, but I only used my name as the player's name.

I will name them after random movie characters.

After my first playthrough of FF7, I always named Red XIII "Nanaki".

Most games i stick with the default names because OCD. I don't even change FF6 names from caps to lower case. For games without default naming (FF1, Inindo, Ultima Exodus) or where characters have their own names but the game doesn't really say (Secret of Mana, FFMQ) i'll name the MC after myself.

One exception is Gobi from Breath of Fire. I hate this piece of shit so much that i usually change his name to reflect his personality. I hate him so fucking much i even changed his stats in this pic so he would be useless forever.

I almost always go with defaults but if I can't I'll pick a relevant culture (Celtic, Russian, Indian, etc.) and one or two letters at random and then search for a cool sounding name that matches.

If I have to make my own characters, I find that naming characters after friends I had in elementary school is always good for feels, especially if the game is like FFIII or Etrian Odyssey and uses kid characters.
