Do you think the retro games community needs more or less gatekeeping? Or is it just right? Is it even possible to gatekeep old games anymore?

The only people who care about gatekeeping retro games are real hardware collectors angry it is getting more expensive. I say they more the merrier. As far as I am concerned , I want the scene to be so large that all the big AAA companies stop bothering with that live service crap and retvrn to making real games.

How is this gatekeeping though

Are you asking this because of insufferable people of today? I just pretend that they don't exist.

If the last 10 years has taught us anything, it's that gatekeeping is extremely required for all forms of entertainment. The only argument is how much.

retro gaming pretty much gatekeeps itself. a lot of younger folks have no idea how to use emulators/roms (or are too scared to), or can't afford consoles and games.

Anyone can pick up and play old video games, you can't gatekeep people in single player stuff.

I may be in the minority here but I think they need less gatekeeping. Zoomers and aoomers can't really do anything to ruin muh old games, the multiplayer ones are already mostly dead so if they want to host a server for something like Marathon Infinity deathmatch or Nox PvP then that will actually be an improvement.

This, along with the fact older games being unforgiving is more than enough to scare off weenies.

The only gatekeeping is from yourself if you're too retarded to lern how to play older games.

Most of the absolute worst of zoomers are already put off by anything that looks retro besides Minecraft (and even then, a lot of them like to use shaders) and isn't online multiplayer or a movie game, so I don't think more gatekeeping is even necessary, or possible.
The kind of insufferable people currently within retro gaming communities already are the kind of people who likely would have been there 20-40 years ago too.

It just depends. I don’t really care about save states, as long as the player isn’t ruining their overall experience by abusing them.

The only thing I’m autistic about are different versions of games. I sort of despise what I view as pointless or outright negative changes to ports / remakes. I don’t like having to ask which version a person played before discussing a game with them.

Unnatural attempts at gatekeeping usually just become pathological assholes shitting where they eat and making a community inhospitable for even the regular members who don't give a shit about community drama. It's done by people who probably got kicked out from other communities
These games already cost two whole fucking asscheeks to afford physically, popular rom sites keep going down, not every game is easy to emulate and not ever are even in English, and of course you have to care about old games to even know some of these titles exist, that's plenty

gatekeeping with an ivory tower mentality results in stagnation, and stagnation leads to everyone eventually no longer engaging as they already talked about X, Y, and Z so many times and for so many years.

Gate keeping should just be that. If you're into something than the gate is open, if you're posing to fit in, the gate is closed. Simple as

old games do a good enough job gate keeping by themselves, king's field is a really good example of this since the walk and turn speed immediately filters ADHD shitters. but who gives a fuck if someone wants to get into an old game and they actually enjoy it? i say go for it. you can't stop people from playing old games these days anyway, especially now with how easy it is to emulate things. it's up to the games themselves to do the gate keeping and as i said, most of them do it just fine.

I'd say it needs more.

I mean, just see what happened after Apple let major emulators on their store and emulation in general got more popular, we lost Vimm's Lair in a flash, and now the Internet Archive's looking like it won't last long either.

The less people and demand there is, the better.

Movie games are a thing of the past nowadays, dino anon. We're in the sandbox era.
