My parents are fucked up hippies, and were weird about guns and army games. Like my mom to this day is convinced that if we got too high a score in lethal enforcers on genesis that the army would draft us to fight in the middle east as if it was connected to the internet in some enders game type shit. In canada no less. One time my friend brought over mercenaries and I showed dad how you could commandeer civilian vehicles and he freaked out and said this is too much like what's really happening in the world and not to let mom see this shit. Fucking faggot.

What were the gameplay changes if you picked a faction where the main character also spoke that language? I know the girl spoke chinese, the main guy spoke russian and the black guy spoke korean.

they were right, just a bit early with the genesis
that wasnt a conspiracy. they were actually doing exactly that in the states throughout the 00s
they literally use playstation controllers to pilot drones to this very day. prolly saves massive time on training, since xXxMr.Sandman420xXx already has his thousand hrs in on the equipment before he even enlists

More actual game design than pretty much every modern open world game.
You actually had to think about how you were going to tackle objectives, use your resources carefully and etc.

Its the rare open world game where acquiring a helicopter is a big deal, and stealing one means it's something you want to be very careful to keep your hands on.

Even now, I can't think of many games which used their resources and open worlds like Mercs 1 did.

still pisses me off to this day that they had the MOAB, supposedly the ultimate weapon, summoned by a thrown gas grenade, rendering it completely useless. why the hell couldn't it be a laser designator or a satellite uplink? genuinely baffling oversight

they were really selfish with the helicopers in this game
you could only order 2 through the mafia shop, and none of the actual good ones
