Did you know you can fuck up and not get the revive spell for Benjamin? I accidentally skipped it in my last run and anytime my partner got KO'd or petrified I was completely fucked.

Rented and beat this as a kid, it's okay, still think it was dumb as fuck not to release V here. Mystic Quest was designed to be babies first JRPG, nothing wrong with simple but it was a little too simple. Music rocked though, final boss theme especially.

I listen to this every time I am reminded this game exists.

I think it's a really solid game for what it is, and which has gotten a lot of unnecessary flak for being really easy, when the entire concept of the game was to be an easy entrylevel jarpig, and when it's actually pretty good at being exactly that.
I think the game is a bit of a victim of its own branding, with some people having certain expectations of it because it's named Final Fantasy, and also that as far as beginner jarpigs go, it would get supplanted by the Pokémon games, which in many ways are much stronger as products, and even as games (even if little of the music of at least the retro era games is anywhere near as good).

Beyond that, it has great graphics, sound, and music, and even haters usually admit to that, even if they shit on its gameplay. One of my favorite parts was the monster graphics, which were fun to look at, and I always thought it was cool that they showed damage, and I always viewed this as a point of superiority over most other RPGs.

I'm personally really fond of it for its visuals and music, so it still holds a pretty dear spot to me, and I think that this would still be a really good game for very young gamers, this game will teach a 6 year old a lot of videogame and RPG basics while being attractive to look at and listen to.

Agree. That one is still one of my favorite of the old 2D Final Fantasies.

Even if you're not gonna play the game (the gameplay itself really is nothing special), do yourself a favor and at least jump around a bit in some YouTube videos to get a look at the various enemies, or maybe just a sprite sheet while listening to some of the music.
The enemy design quite fun.

I like how they titled it Final Fantasy USA in Japan, like showcasing how fat and stupid we are that we needed a baby game to learn how to make numbers go up

I'm actually playing through it now. Great game. Don't understand the hate. It would've been nice if they had a mini-series of sequels in this style they had released between mainline FFs.

if i remember right, this game didnt have random encounters, there were set places to fight monsters, and therefor limited encounters. also the final boss could be cheesed in like 3 turns by casting healing magic on it.

Enemies will only respawn if you leave and re-enter a dungeon, except for bosses, which die permanently. The battlefield instances on the overworld have 10 fights each then they are empty, usually giving you some kind of reward for clearing them out (one of the early ones giving you Magic Charm).

>>11217638
I think there's space in the market for newbie JRPGs for kids, but like I said, I think Pokémon just about ate all of that space up by the virtue of being the really big and famous one with the cosmic amounts of merchandising.

Fantastic music and intriguing ideas. Unfortunately it's got extremely tedious battles (and by extension, dungeons), especially towards the end of the game. They're completely mindless, but they require just enough engagement (choosing the right weapon/spell for the right enemy) and persist for just long enough that they become annoying.
They're somewhat less tedious than the random fights in Octopath Traveler, however.

You've never encountered a cartridge with a dead save battery before? That's pretty easy to fix, like a really beginner's soldering job, you should be able to learn how to properly do it by reading a guide and getting just a few basic tools.

Just keep a window open while doing the actual soldering part, maybe even with a fan blowing air out the window. Don't use lead-free solder btw, it's fucking worthless.

I was a 14 year old kid. I couldn't figure out what to do if the zipper on my fly got stuck let alone what to do about a SNES game with a dead battery. If I had the cartridge today I'd switch it out, sadly I threw the game out soon after my story

Rented it as a kid in the 90s.

I think at the time it was like my 3rd RPG after playing Dragon Warrior 1 (Quest) on the original NES and Final Fantasy 1. I don't really count Zelda titles.

It was fun, the towns were comfy, the music was great, the characters had expressions.

Sure it was easy if you had a solid week to play it and compare it to everything we would get after over the next 30 years but at the time back in the 90s it was super fun

Don't listen to weirdos like ProJared and other Youtubers that are just looking to bash something because they know their soul broken audience need something the hate collectively

It really was my first JRPG. I remember that, at first I really sucked and died at the flamerus rex a few times. By the end I knew what to do and was getting a little tired of the game, but still wanted to play to the end. It definitely helped me understand JRPG basics but I didn't go on to play more FF - it was Lufia 2 and the Phantasy Star series.

I actually remember when this came out and all the gaming mags billed it as Final Fantasy Lite, easier, simpler, the game that could help get your little brother into rpgs. I never really gave it a fair shake, but after reading this thread I kind of want to try it again.

I bought this when it came out as it was the only final fantasy game available on tne SNES apart from II which I thought was amazing. There wasn’t really a lot of decent western RPGs on the system at all at that point.
At the time this was reviewed as okay but called out for its cut down light gaming style. I finished it and never thought of it again.
It’s surprising to see so many posts here claiming this is a great game now.

First FF I played and I really liked it
Best thing about it was the enemies visible on the map instead of random encounters, they should have done that for all FFs
