What games might have been on the Dreamcast if it had survived longer?

Let's say for instance that the DC is on the market until late 2005 when it gets replaced by the Dreamcast 2.

GTA 3 definitely would have been on DC
What about Vice City though? I don't feel like there's anything much more technologically advanced about it that would mean it couldn't be a DC game.
San Andreas would definitely be too much. It wouldn't fit on the disc, for one thing. So it would be held back and become a Dreamcast 2 launch title in 2005, probably ending up as the definitive console version of the game

It's very sad to this day what happened the dreamcast. It cost a fraction of what the PS2 did and it had online out of the box. Dozens of great games by the time the PS2 launched. Sega fucked up so bad in previous generations - 32x, segacd, Saturn, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with the dreamcast. I don't know how it could have been more of a success.

If sales were bad so what - over time PS2 fans would eventually work out that dreamcast was worth having as well. Remember dreamcast had a ton of exclusives at that point that were only ported to PS2 later. You can see today the incredible community of people with fond memories of the dreamcast, of the closely-knit online communities like on PSO that survive to this day, being forcibly brought back online after Sega shut them down.

Whoever decided to terminate dreamcast and all console manufacture was a fucking coward. All they had to do was wait it out. .

In some of the DC games I've bought second hand you can sometimes find adverts inside for the upcoming games of 2001, and it's always interesting to see what was just around the corner for the system that we never got. Pretty much what >>11189567 said but I do remember there being a lot more games on there that were eventually moved to the Xbox.

I also think there would've been a Skies of Arcadia 2 on that system eventually. I remember reading some dev blog saying that Skies of Arcadia 2 was written up on a whiteboard in the studio as a "reminder to do this" thing that was eventually scrapped because by the time they could've begun development on it the 7th gen was rolling around and they just assumed people wouldn't be interesting in a JRPG sequel from 2000.

Also that Castlevania game someone found a iso of a few years back.

>>11189580
I doubt Heroes would've been made had the DC survived, same with Shadow. Those games feel like Sega trying to move away from the Adventure feeling and try something new and out there, whereas if they stuck to the DC then Adventure 3 just would've made sense. I also think if Shenmue 3 were to exist in the hypothetical Yakuza on the Dreamcast probably wouldn't. That'd be an interesting port though, I wonder if it would be possible?

It wouldn't have.
>b-but someone is showing proof that it could have!
Yeah but he has an unlimited time to make a port functional (not even close to completion btw) on top of decades worth of knowledge on the ins and outs of the system. Try managing a tight deadline crunch and finding the human resources to get the game out for 2001 or 2002 on top of managing to have proper button layouts for a controller missing a lot of the inputs utilized for GTA3 (secondary analog, R2/L2, analog buttons R3/L2, select were all used). Oh and convincing Rockstar to spend money on said port. It was never happening and they figured that out fast enough thankfully.

>Dreamcast was at 9 million sales in just 2 years on the market (3 if you count the extra year in Japan)
That's because by the 2nd year they were practically giving away the console. The thing wasn't even 2 years old by the time it was reduced to $80 and then to $50. They wouldn't have done this if the console wasn't a giant money sink. The reality is Sega was doomed even before the console came out. They should've left the business after the Saturn, at least then they would've had been in a far better position as a major publisher.

The existence of LCS and VCS on PSP with the exact same button layout as a Dreamcast (+ a select button) automatically debunks your controller concerns.
>secondary analog
Have you played GTA 3 lately? It just puts you in first-person and lets you look around while standing still; if you can't even move while looking, then you'd get the same functionality by pressing up on the d-pad and moving the singular Dreamcast stick. Oh, I guess it also lets you bounce a vehicle with hydraulics as well, which is like, whatever dude.
>R2/L2
On foot these switch weapons, which could just be mapped to the d-pad. In a vehicle these turn the camera left/right, so you could do the PSP L-modifier solution or move them to X and A
>Analog buttons
These are only used for the accelerator and brake pedals, and luckily the Dreamcast has analog triggers (which pretty much every game with cars mapped the pedals to by 2001)
>L3/R3
Only used for tooting the horn and activating taxi/paramedic/fireman/vigilante missions; these could just go to the d-pad instead. On foot R3 also lets Claude peer over his shoulder, which isn't really an existential part of the game.
>Select
The only thing we're missing out on, but you could just change the camera setting in the pause menu (GameCube ports often did this due to no select button)

>JSRF
Wouldn't have happened without the death of the Dreamcast. JSRF was a reboot of the franchise and they wouldn't have rebooted the franchise on the same console the original was on.
>Sonic Heroes
Sonic Team stated that they decided to make Heroes instead of Adventure 3 to make the series appeal to a broader audience than just Dreamcast owners after going multiplat. SA3 would've had a similar plot to Heroes, albeit with a more fleshed out story and possibly with less characters. Shadow probably still would've gotten made though, it was apparently Iizuka's passion project.
>Spartan: Total Warrior
Sega wouldn't have bought CA if they hadn't gone multiplat since Total War is an exclusively PC franchise.

the safest guess would be that most of the sequels to DC games they made on other consoles (i.e. JSRF, HOTD3, crazy taxi 3, sonic heroes, etc.). i could see the OP happening if half-life's DC port got off the ground.

i could see MGS2 or yakuza happen on dreamcast as multi-disc games.

>>11192307
>>11192472
>>11192534
i don't think i could ever really seen a "modern" TES game (as in anything from morrowind onward) on anything weaker than an OG xbox without it being some absurd amount of discs BUT i could see a spinoff title like redguard, battlespire or the travels games.

>muh optimization
bro bethesda can barely optimize their games NOW. case in point the reason why fallout 4 has/had shit framerates in areas is because to make rock, rubble & bushes they'll have a bigger model under the map peaking out rather than make a smaller model for that purpose and starfield is a system hog of a game.

>but there was absolutely nothing wrong with the dreamcast

Except, you know, multiple hardware flaws, bad marketing handling, mostly-arcade game library, lack of big players like EA supporting the system...

I think the fact that GTA (or just any open-world except Shenmue) didn't come out on Dreamcast was an important factor of failure. They were warned that open-worlds are hot shit right now, but they didn't listen and rejected their own chances.

I'm a big Dreamcast fan, but that's the truth. System was partially living on the life support of believing into SEGA brand. One thing you should give them credit for is how they've made themselves a name so big and solid, people still believe in Sega, despite them being idiots for literal AGES.
