For those who emulate N64 games, how do you set up the controls for a modern control pad?

>> No.11162847

>>11162831
For any game that doesn't use the C-buttons just do the default binds every emulator has where right stick is the C-buttons.
But for games that do make extensive use of them, just get an adapter. I've been using the Retrode2 with its N64 controller adapter though I wouldn't recommend it since it's barely compatible with fucking anything due to Windows addressing it in a weird way.

I usually map c-left and c-down to the upper right face buttons and c-right and c-up to the shoulder buttons. Then if the dpad isn't used I leave L unbound and map Z and R to the triggers, and map the c buttons to the dpad and right stick as well. That usually works out pretty well for most games.

In retrospect the library of releases for this console * looks * like shit becuase the dynamics of gaming have shifted a lot since... but at the time, this was peak multiplayer gaming. Countless fond memories, spending hours with friends and family playing this on huge rear projection TVs. Sure playing online is fun and convinient now, but it does not compare even the slightest to being in a room with your friends, eating pizza and screaming at each other playing what this console had to offer... it was all downhill from there.

The library isn't even that bad, I think people literally just don't do their research. There's plenty of mainstream western titles but also a handful of Japanese titles that are rarely mentioned. Anything that isn't on there is usually on SNES or GBC anyway. I like 2D games but they didn't really need to make a second SNES

I've never even seen an N64 irl but I think it's so overrated. It barely has any games. It's also a cartridge system with 3D graphics capability. So many limitations. Don't even hit me with the quality over quantity meme because it's not true. All the hype is from millennials that got it for Christmas and have mad nostalgia for it.

The console has shmups. Not as many as Saturn or PS1, but they are there. I played pic related a few months ago and it was a blast. Not many RPG's but it does still have Paper Mario, Ogre Battle, Mega Man Legends, and a handful of others. If people want more... then they should play Super Nintendo, which got Super Mario RPG and Bahamut Lagoon when the N64 came out, or GB/C which got proper Pokemon and Dragon Warrior titles.

One of the big things with this was the 4 controller ports and moreso the fact that there were a bunch of games pushing for 4 people to game on the console at the same time. These 4 player consoles along with pc lan gaming pushed multiplayer before the whole "online" gaming could eventually have enough bandwidth to do so. It's definitely it's own era of gaming.

>No longer exclusive
I don't think counting those games as not exclusives based on releases in future console gens is fair, because by that logic a very large amount of games are not exclusive. If you want to say a game isn't exclusive because it came out for another console in the same gen, even if it was later, that's fine. But saying Zelda 2 isn't a NES exclusive because it came out on the GBA seems.. not quite right. Might as well say all exclusives don't matter because of emulation at that point.

I'm currently waiting on a steelsticks64 A grade bowl which I intend to install into my best controller, which I know has good gears but I need to check the condition of the stick. If it's too worn I might use a Kitsch Bent stick but those kinda suck.

I wanted to buy a controller pak for a few games which need it to save, however I also recently bought a Raphnet V3 GameCube adapter, which has a builtin controller pak, so I suppose I don't really need a real one.

I've seen somebody do that before, but I haven't attempted it since I haven't worked with epoxy before. That's why I grabbed a steelsticks64 bowl when they were available recently. It was expensive but it should last a long time.

The AliExpress SC64 carts should work just like the regular SC64, but they're not built to spec. FPGA speed is luck of the draw, it's definitely sourced from binned components, and it's obviously lacking in build quality.
However, as of the current firmware even with the speed grade 4 FPGA chip (instead of 6) that many of the units ship with it seems to function perfectly fine according to people who bought one.
There's no guarantee that future updates won't break this, though, so don't expect to be always able to update firmwares if you have one.
Also, apparently the AliExpress sellers are working to make all their carts speed grade 6 as of like a week or so ago which is why they're not for sale at the moment.

nta goldeneye enemies have several different variables like health, damage, accuracy, reaction speed, also the gun they use which aren't always machine guns. You also have special enemies like Jaws and Xena. Added to this their placement is also going to be important in determining how you engage with them. You're just plain objectively wrong to suggest this as a flaw in the game that it has humans instead of children's monsters.

I'm in the market for a good modern-style N64 controller. Was using the Brawler 64, which I liked, but the rubber came off the joystick and it soured me on the whole thing.

Also, is there a good N64 controller to USB solution that isn't Raphnet?

>> No.11172083

>>11172034
There is the Tribute 64 which is a clone of the Horipad Mini. Not sure if you consider that to be modern style. You could also get a real Horipad.

There is also the Raphnet GameCube to N64 adapter so you can use a GameCube controller. Version 3 of the adapter has a builtin controller pak. I don't think any version of the adapter supports rumble.

Raphnet also make a Wii to N64 adapter, so you can use the Wii classic controller and others.

Maybe you could also get a replacement joystick cap for your brawler.

For USB adapters I think I have one of these: https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-Nintendo-Controller-Adapter-Windows/dp/B089LKCBLG.. It's OK I suppose. If you get one make sure to install the latest firmware.

I should get a Hori, since I exclusively play Smash Remix with friends. But they look, well, miniature — I have Duke-sized hands.

Never even heard of the GCN-to-N64 idea; it sounds very cool! That might be the ultimate way to go, though I don't have much first-hand experience with those controllers.

As for your USB dongle, is latency ever a notable issue? I couldn't find numbers on it, and while I'm not super-autismo, I do only play Smash.

The main selling point for non-developers, other than the lower price, is support for running 64DD ROMs. However, that's less useful than you may think. Every 64DD game that's worth playing already has a cartridge conversion, making it more of a fun novelty.

Other advantages include:
- Cheaper ($124 vs $159)
- Saves to the SD card during gameplay instead of waiting until the next time you load the menu
- MicroSD card doesn't stick out
- More color options (got mine is smoke black, but that one's sold out now so suck it)
- Open-source design and software
- Various development features (much faster at loading ROMs over USB, programmable button and LED, etc.)

Disadvantages:
- Lacks cheat support
- Battery not included due to the seller having shipping issues (applies if bought from Phenon Mod). It can, however, work without one (but not on PAL, due to technical limitations).
- MicroSD card can be a bit hard to remove

All-in-all, the SummerCart64 is the obvious choice if you want a fully-featured flash cart (no reset to save, RTC, USB port for development, etc.). That is, unless you really need cheat support right now (it's still being worked on).

For me the most interesting feature is native DD support. Seeing the DD startup screen is cool, but it's interesting to think that somebody could do something like convert OoT back to the DD and implement the disk-only features which Nintendo originally wanted, such as using the writable storage to allow the player to interact with the world in a more permanent way. Maybe also use the real time clock. Or make homebrew and ROM hacks which use those features.

In every picture I've seen, it sticks out slightly. Just a minor nitpick.

Sure, but the added security of how the SC64 handles saving is nice. Doesn't really matter much in the end, though.

>>11175028
Another small advantage: The X7 is limited to just 1024 files per directory. This isn't quite enough for a full ROM set. I'm not sure how many the SummerCart64 menu supports, but it handles at least enough for a complete ROM set (~1100 files). Pretty minor difference, but it's there.

I don't know about any of that stuff, but the SC64 is fully open-source, so theoretically it should be easier to verify those sorts of claims. At any rate, compatibility is said to be on par with the X7 (barring 64DD support, which is unique to the SC64).

>> No.11176691

>>11176647
>I don't understand. Are you asking why improvements are a good thing?

I am saying that sometimes an "improvement" is only better on the surface. There are pros, cons and trade-offs for everything. Never is something simply a "free" upgrade. Maybe the SC64 is all that, but I'm no expert and it's too early to tell. I'll wait and see how it holds up over time.

>> No.11176728

>>11176691
I haven't seen anyone have any problems with compatibility, and regardless of whatever flashcart you get it will be true to the original hardware since it's playing on an N64 (as long as it's properly transferring data which is a pretty low bar since a Raspberry Pi Pico can function as a flashcart).
The only exception to that would be 64DD games, but the SC64 would be more 'accurate' in that regard since it emulates the hardware and runs the 64DD ROMs directly unlike other carts which need converted ROMs.
Primarily the SummerCart was made to have a better developer cartridge. It's entirely open source, and the USB speeds are much better. The Everdrive advertises up to 23 MB/s over USB but can't reliably deliver even a twentieth of that, taking minutes to upload a ROM, while the SC64 can upload a 64MB ROM in a few seconds.
As far as downsides go, I suppose the open source N64FlashcartMenu used is missing a few misc. features still like cheat support or a Controller Pak file manager which are still WIP, but it's also got some other upsides like showing game box art or the 64DD emulation support I mentioned above.

I'm playing through Banjo-Dreamie right now and there's good stuff and bad stuff imo:
>Good
-Clever use of notes instead of jiggies, I like the idea a lot
-only 25 notes and 2 honeycombs per level
-Making you find even the basic moves makes it quite challenging yet still fun at the beginning
-Solid level design overall with nice aesthetics, tunes are catchy too
-Very focused on platforming, if someone didn't like Banjo-Kazooie because of the collecting or the minigames and exploration overtaking the platforming aspect of the game then this hack might be what they want
>Bad
-Kinda mixed on the backtracking, its kinda cool to go back with new moves to get missing notes but it can be tedious because of that.
-Note-reset on death can be painful since there's more (& harder) platforming, notes are much harder to find, there's some nasty enemy placement and there's a lot of fall-damage or even lava insta-killing you, never had an issue with the reset on the original BK but it can be infuriating in Dreamie
-A lot of "moving on tight-ropes", this wouldn't be that bad if the camera wasn't stuck in one angle in some areas (like the volcano on the beach level) that you can't move or getting blocked by some elements, the lava part of the moon level was really annoying.

Its a pretty good romhack even if the bad camera and some frustrasting parts (mostly regarding the note reset) can make you drop the game, I'll recommend it mostly to people that want a harder Banjo challenge with more focus on platforming.

Tooie is very divisive, some like it or even call it better than Kazooie while others fucking despise it.
Tooie trades the simple collecting of the first game for more complex ways to get jiggies (by interconnecting worlds and making you do a lot of tasks to get one single Jiggy), there is still a lot of collectables but they're not placed all over the place (its more "compact" in that regard), and the notes dont reset if you die because they work in a different way, there's also way more backtracking (you need new moves that you will learn in later worlds or do something in a different world that will trigger an action that opens a locked place) and the worlds are thrice the size of Kazooie, it can become really tedious to do some stuff (specially anything involving Mumbo or transformations) and later worlds, specially Grunty Industries can be a headache to go around.
Like I said before you might like it or hate it depending on how you can handle the huge worlds and complex tasks, I didn't like it during my first play but after beating it twice I do like it a lot, not as much as the original Kazooie but still would recommend it.

It's the only banjovania on the market and it's a borderline masterpiece, and the clear evolution for banjo in terms of cementing its rareware identity in gameplay, tone, and level design. Banjo Tooie is what happens when you get to Rusty Bucket Bay, and the gates open up and reveal something more grungier, expansive and exciting. The complaints against this game are all from children who got filtered and can't get over their initial disappointment they can't get a single jiggy or two immediately - that jiggies feel more earned. Tooie is the salty spitoon where the world feels lived in and it's just you and your navigation skills, kazooie is still kids at recess on the playground who need shiny things every two seconds

The section that filters many. I think it’s sort of funny that it calls back to the (randomized) Grunty trivia, and I’ve never once had trouble there. Even as a kid, I guess I interacted with Brentilda for whatever reason.

>Is tooie as good as this one?
Better in some ways, worse in others. The most important factor for your enjoyment during a first time playthrough: do not attempt to 100% clear any level until you have obtained all moves. Explore each level as well as you can, note areas you think you’ll need to return to, and move on to the next level after you have learned the moves from the current one. Tooie asks you to backtrack more than the first game. It’s (usually) not annoying, especially on a repeat playthrough, but it trips up a lot of people on the first go.

I was able to mitigate it by putting in a business card between the power supply's main pcb and the loose connector to tighten the connector. That seemed to work for a few days, but it's back to glitching again, albeit far less often than when I first encountered this problem. The way I see it, there's 3 paths forward:

Recently picked up an ElectronNMB (breakout board that adds multiple audio/video outputs). I wanted to be able to easily flip between composite and s-video captures for development purposes + output to a TV at the same time, so this fit the bill perfectly.

Pros:
- Using all the outputs at once works as expected without major issue.
- Excellent s-video quality. Not sure how it compares with an OEM s-video cable, but the NMB pretty much eliminates the subtle checkerboarding I was getting with a third-party cable.

Cons:
- The multi-out pass-through is extremely tight. Plugging it in almost feels like it will break something, but it seems to work fine otherwise.
- The image is slightly darker than using a cable directly. It's extremely subtle, but should be noted. This was tested against OEM composite and third-party s-video cables. I recommend adjusting the gain if it bothers you.

For my usage case, it's better than messing with splitters, distribution amplifiers, or those questionably-built s-video + composite cables. It does exactly what I need with minimal changes to the signal. Pretty happy with it overall.

Here's what I mean by checkerboarding. Notice how the folder icon on the left has a subtle checkerboard pattern to it. That's with a third-party cable (one with s-video only, no composite). Really makes me wonder how well the first-party cable does, but I'm not spending the $40 to find out.

Took a risk and bought a used expansion pack from a local indoor flea market for $30 today but I'm not sure if its authentic or not. It looks real and Perfect Dark seems to run just fine with it.

I've never played Pokemon in Japanese before now; I'm using Stadium 2 as a companion piece to playing through Japanese gens 1 and 2. Still not sure of the exact games - I'm thinking Green and Gold.

Would be cool if somebody made an FPGA expansion pak which also replaced the internal memory but performed better and was higher capacity. Wouldn’t be cheap though.

Not possible: https://n64brew.dev/wiki/FAQ#Would_it_be_possible_to_create_a_larger_RAM_expansion_for_N64,_to_go_beyond_the_total_8_MiB_we_can_get_today_with_the_Expansion_Pak?

Interesting, thanks. So basically the RAM controller inside in the RCP cannot address more than 8MB (actually MiB). Though I am still interested in ways to increase the memory bandwidth. From what I understand the N64 could really be unlocked if that was higher.

Another interesting thing on that same page is the ROM limitation. Previously I had seen that it was 252MB, but it says that it can be up to 4GB without bank switching.

>> No.11196617

Did you know that the signals used by GameCube controllers are compatible with the N64. You could wire up a GameCube controller to an N64 without a converter and a game could use it, presumably including all its buttons and both sticks. No retail games support this but I believe there is an SM64 ROM hack which does, and I think libdragon does too.

Just hire a Chinese company to make a modified reverse engineered RI chip that has more space in the state machine. Would be tricky, but I think it's totally doable in today's hacking/modding scene. Hell, there is probably some anon already looking into this or something similar. I say if you're going to solve this problem might as well hit it hard and just do the dirty work.

Problem is that it doesn't seem to be a separate chip, but integrated into the RCP. I think you can see it in this picture of a decapped RCP, RDRAM Interface next to RSP Core. https://static.miraheze.org/n64wiki/e/e2/N64_RCP_Decapped.jpg

I was thinking on getting one (or a regular hall effect gamepad since i have a blueretro adapter).

I have one of those 8bitdo hall effect sticks. It doesn't respond exactly like an ideal OEM stick, but then no third-party solution does (not even if you refurbish an original by using kitsch bent parts, from what I've seen). My main gripe is that it feels a little oversensitive, but you get used to it.

Note: These test results don't tell the whole story. Some types of sticks have spot-on range results, but the values in the middle are jumpy or inconsistent. The 8bitdo one, at least, seems alright.

I'll eventually get to that. Been playing a lot of helicopter and plane games recently and have this and Chopper Attack for the N64. Chopper Attack is pretty fun, and the final level is gated by expert mode.

>> No.11198469

i have seen these in Alibaba since 2 years ago, but i have been buying from China for years and something i have learned is that when an item is sold on alibaba but not on aliexpress, means the item is too low quality it will burn your console and the chinks wont risk refunds on aliexpress, so these expansions must be fucking shit

yes i do
>are the N64 consoles cheap in these days?
ehhh Im from the third world and a N64 is not the cheapest but nowhere near an expensive console, around 50-60 bucks with a controller
you can get cheap flashcarts from china
only problem is getting an expansion, these things are getting very expensive every year

i remember when the first snes multicarts came out, i bought like 20 of them to make some money, in the end half of them got their rom mask corrupted after a week of use

I do, I prefer playing on console than emulating honestly.
>are they cheap?
they used to be cheap but they're quite expensive nowadays (not nes/snes tier but more expensive than sony stuff), add the extra stuff like a cheap flashcart, a controller in good condition, the expansion pak and something like an hdmi adapter in case your tv doesn't have composite or worse, have to get a crt.
Easy $160 there, maybe more.

Those multicarts were infamous. The modern wave of everdrive clones are decently good quality. I’m on the verge of ordering some nes and n64 ones in bulk to flip on eBay.

I was up until my audio starting acting up. Based on my troubleshooting, I think I am one of the (seemingly) few who has had a capacitor die despite taking good care of the system. Maybe it didn’t like the several year stretch where it was never powered on? I’m not sure. I plan to replace the caps at some point within the next 6 months. I know a place that would probably repair it for cheap, but I would rather buy the tools and do it myself if I can do so in a reasonable timeframe.

>are the N64 consoles cheap in these days?
Yes and no. With a flashcart setup, you’re getting a lot of games for your buck, but I would guess you’re going to spend between $100-$400 depending on the deals you find and the setup you want. Between the high-end Everdrive and the Retrotink 2x Pro, I sunk about $300 on my N64 this year, alone. That estimate doesn’t include the cost of the tools you’ll want to have for performing even light maintenance.
