What were mmo's in the 90's like? Must have
been a pain in the ass on dial-up.

>> No.1116664

Most of them were text based and called MUDs. True graphical MMOs did exist in the latter part of the decade, but they were the exception rather than the rule.

Only bad thing about dialup was losing connection.
I played uo for a few years and eq for a few more on dialup with little discomfort.

>> No.1119520

Nah not really. My uncle had cable and convinced everyone else in the family to get it early (96 or so?) so I was playing UO on cable. It was really funny too because in that game if you had a faster connection, you had a faster movement speed basically. So I was typically able to outrun people on horseback just by having a better connection.

For example they had player run "subpaths". Subpath is a specialization of your warrior/mage/rogue/poet class.

I wasn't into it too much but an in game friend named Citian actually entered one for rogue's called shadow and exposed all this bullshit and nepotism they were involved in and got the whole subpath dissolved by the game developers. they put him in charge of a new one shortly thereafter called the rangers. (before it was merchant/spy/shadow)

>> No.1120180

Man, I miss MMOs. FPSes and MOBAs are taking over as there are always cycles for which genre of games are popular, but from like 2003-2007 MMOs were the shit. MMOs in the very late 90s though were part of an absolutely niche market though. MMOs were unheard of to nearly everyone. A few times around 1998-2000 I tried to get into some but just couldn't because of prevailing connection stability issues. You can't exactly talk about MMOs without going past the retro horizon.

To be honest, Habbo/Hotelli Kultakala used to be pretty good between 2000 - 2001, it only started going downhill in mid - late 02, when the horny teenagers decided it would make a good place to have cybersex, and act like a bunch of assholes. Considering that Mobiles Disco is what Habbo directly evolved from, it saddens me a great deal, knowing such a great game suffered such a shitty fate, and has gotten to the point of no return.

I should open up a Mobiles Disco private server one of these days, just so I can go on a nostalgia trip, like the sad cunt I am.

This isn't retro but I used to play the shit out of DarkRP on garrys mod. Its mostly played by little kids and they carebeared the shit out of it now, but in the good ol days that game brought me to tears many many times. Smashing the fucking shit out of people with invisible prop traps, exploiting to push myself through walls to break into peoples bases to steal guns/drugs/money printers. I can still remember this small little british voice "stop minging me" as I repeatedly exploited myself into his base and killed him. My friends and I played that for so many hours even though we all had like 10 years on everyone in that game but it was so fun agitating them. I swear we got some of those kids kicked off the computer by their parents hahaha. Now they fixed a lot of the exploits I used to do and a lot of servers disable the tools I would use to ninja kill people so its not as much fun.

Not really no.
They were a pain on a shitty connection, but that's true no matter what speed you have. Poor connections are poor connections no matter how much corrupted data they send.

MMOs were different experiences depending on which you played, even if many of them were thematically similar. They weren't explicitly D&D knock offs or so similar mechanically like what you see today with effectivelly WoW knockoffs or Diablo with more player clones.

Does anyone remember Legend of Mir 2?

It had a great system of PvP. The more you killed the more infamous you became, your name would darken until it became pure black at which point if you were killed you'd drop all your equipment and money in addition to bounty messages being called out serverwide. You could also be killed without the murderer losing karma.

So if you were killed by them you'd drop a small portion of your money, you do some killing maybe now you have a chance at dropping your amulet upon death from a player, you kill some more and serverwide messages start being broadcasted for your capture, etc.

It meant that as a lowbie you were not really hunted lest somebody disliked you for whatever reason, however on the flipside there were whole guilds of black-named characters who after reaching "endgame" became roaming bandits of the game, pretty much only targetting the highest level players.

A fond memory I have is a black-named warrior with no equips killing all the town guards, I tried to fight him off but was doing no damage. Once I had his attention he just kept juggling me with this no-damage knockback move. Some time passed and I had quickly become the shuttlecock of a guild-wide badminton game.

If this happened in a modern MMO, I think the whole country where the developer operated would have been shut down out of disgust and fear at such online behavior.

>> No.1129223

>been a pain in the ass on dial-up.

MMOs like Everquest that existed near the end of the 1990s were designed with the expectation that people would be playing on dial-up. By the mid-2000s though, the expectation was that MMO players would be playing on high speed connections rather than dial-up.

Final Fantasy XI was released 2003 and was designed to be run on 56k, naturally it was a slower paced game but I always thought it was amazing at how optimised it was, both in networking and general specs.

Also EQ had an interesting system for disconnects, I believe if you were attacking something and you dc'd for whatever reason then you'd be put into a temporary state of godmode and you'd hit like a truck.

You didn't receive any rewards but it was nice to log back into your character and realise you didn't just lose 4 hours of work.

I was born a touch after MUD's were popular.

How did parties and lore work? So you and three friends are grouped up and enter a specific room. Are you all prompted with a notice about your surroundings, do you each have to type /look room to get that info?

Also what are the enemies doing while you're reading, if it's turn-based or rather step based like roguelikes how do you synch that with the other people you play with?

I've always been curious about MUD's, I feel similarly about roguelikes; that stripped away to purely what you can achieve via text you have the ability to create monoliths of content with only imagination as your limit.

Room descriptions are per person, everyone has to do the usual examination themselves. If there are some immediate effects caused by player interactions everyone in room will see them (or feel them if they're unlucky). Most MUDs that I know of have realtime combat and your character will usually auto-defend itself when attacked.

>> No.1129471

>>1129458
The answers to these depend on what you're playing. I played ROM muds, so I'll answer based on the.

A party was formed by inviting other players to it. It gave you access to a command that let you check every party members' health, mana and XP. There were a number of different options you could then set, such as auto-follow and auto-attack. Turning these on meant that, if you were in the same room as the party leader and he'd left, you'd follow or, if someone in the party was attacked, you'd attack too.

When you change rooms, you see the room name, description, exits and then your prompt that is customizable but typically had your current/max health and man, and whatever.

It is not turn-based. Ticks are typically 1 second long (I think it was?). Once you engage in combat, you autoattack every tick, and so does everything else. You see kinda a text-wall of all your attacks, all party members' attacks, and all other attacks. They usually use colors to describe different, arbitrary ranks of damage (maybe 1-100 is yellow, and 101-200 is red).

Most room descriptions are [room name], [room description], [one line about each item], [one line about each mob], then your [prompt].

I guess they required a bit of technical savvy with that particular code-base, but you picked it up pretty quick. Ask anyone who played them regularly, and they can remember walking around thinking "north, north, north, open east, east" as they walked around their house.

You basically don't. If you bash tougher monsters for a while you will gain 1 extra HP. That's your level. Rinse and repeat until you shit HP. Spells are leveled in classic Ultima fashion - cast them to gain % until you qualify for another level in your school of spellcraft. Mana is determined by your mysticism stat, to gain more you have to find mana nodes throughout the world and activate them. Just check gilcon.net/meridian for information.

Did anyone play Neocron 2? It was an MMO with a very Deus Ex feel, despite its age it was able to boast quite a large player run economy. Everything from crafting drugs and selling them (which conferred benefits at the risk of getting hooked) to repairing somebodies broken hoverbike for a fee went on.

There was also a housing market, prime real-estate was dictated by which large guilds were in what areas and also proximity to certain high-traffic Data-zones.

Another cool thing was that hacking was among one of your many skills, by hacking into these specifics nodes you would be transferred into a different world, the coolest thing was that your equipment was based on your hacking level.

So while you could bring along your demolition expert buddy he'd be naked and quite vulnerable. Essentially you went to these areas to get blueprints for crafting and certain materials.

I'm constantly surprised by how few people know of or played it though, in my eyes it should have been so much larger. The company were terrible with their pricing policies though, that might have been it.

do any of you remember cokestudios? it was like habbo but you got money for free as each account started with 5000 decibels, and you could get more by making "music" and playing it ingame. the music was created in a shitty program where you edited multiple tracks. there were no actual music notes, you just had pre-recorded sounds to use. _every_ rock song sounded the same.

but no one really did that.to get money what you would actually do was create throwaway accounts, multi-log, and trade the stuff you bought with your main.

some players would hold games. the host would have 4 people stand in a row, and then they would be boxed in. the host would then have the contestants race by running to the end of the room and back. another game was called 'falling furni'. the host would have people boxed in again, but this time it was a musical chairs type game where the host would place random couches and chairs around.

and then IT happened. IT was teleporters.they made fucking teleporters, man. for the low cost of 2000 decibels, you could buy two teleporters and set them to link to seperate rooms. suddenly, players were creating entire mansions, fortresses, and mazes, using what must of been thousands of throwaway accounts. some of the mazes were immense and looked like a hoarders' house. the creators of the mazes would glitch furniture by stacking them, and then putting whatever was on bottom into their inventory, i think. this way they made floating stuff.

Surprisingly, The Realm worked quite well.

I visited it for a brief while after Sierra was acquired by Vivendi and ended up selling the game to Codemasters. It was fun again for a brief while, but the game hasn't really aged well.

I miss the kind of community that made it good. It was all about being able to interact with people in a positive way that was beyond simply going and farming daily quests and dungeons or doing raids every day.

Though I don't really miss Soldiers of Fortune. Those guys and gals were fucking assholes. I do miss the people I got to roleplay with back in the day, though.

I played Graal for a while when I was a kid. My sister's boyfriend at the time was a mod or something on a server and got her interested, so we split the bill to register an account. I think the server we played on was Impulse or something like that. I loved the shit out of it and ended up playing it way more than she did, but eventually stopped for reasons i don't remember. I know they broke up at some point, so maybe he got butthurt and banned the account to spite us or something.

I also played runescape a ton in middle school. I remember when the RS2 beta first came out and everyone thought it was the hottest shit ever. I still played it a bit off and on into high school and I had my character past level 60 and with trimmed rune armor. Out of nostalgia I loaded it back up for the first time in like 5 years a few months ago and all my rune gear was gone. I still had everything else, all my money and other items, but not the armor.

I think the only other retro MMO I played was Tibia, briefly. The game was just so clunky to me that I couldn't get into it, and having to wait 20 minutes for a log on queue anytime i wanted to play was lame as fuck.

Is that ImaNewbie?

Anyway, loved UO the first year it was around. After that, it degraded sharply in quality.
Part of UOs charm was the fact that it was more or less the first of its kind, and the devs and gamers had no fucking clue what they were doing. The unpolished nature of the game added a ton to its sense of adventure, and many of the exploits and bugs felt like a part of the game.

Drop stone? If you're referring to a rune, why would you drop it? You could simply use it from your inventory.
Also, if you were able to cast gate, you'd already be a ridiculously powerful mage.
Lastly, if you actually had the rune on you when you died, he could simply use the rune to find his dragon.

I call bullshit.

Person who's never MMOd here. So was Ultima Online an actual sandbox virtual world in which you could meet and interact with anyone in the world playing at the same time as you? Because that's what I thought MMOs in general were, but all I hear of WoW etc is people teaming up and going on hack n'slash raids.

>> No.1133217

>>1133190

WoW is a touch contrary as they generally make all your dungeons instanced-based, which means you and your buddies make a group and enter a dungeon and no other players will be in that dungeon with you except for that party\alliance.

Most MMO's are fully interactive though, you could meet somebody while buying a new sword, gathering materials, killing a boss etc anywhere that you can go generally there'll be another real person there doing something aswell.

That doesn't make it a sandbox however, that term refers to a players ability to modify the MMO's gameworld. So for instance owning a plot of land that other players can see and visit, or any variation of a heavily player-based economy.

I've looked for any groups doing such a thing but no luck. I really do think there needs to be a preservation society for these games similar to the effort of redump, tosec, etc.

A friend of mine, who worked with me at Sulake Incorporation at the time helped work on the creation of Coke Studios. They were the ones commissioned to create it, hence why it was so similar to Habbo.

"Falling furni", and teleporters both originated from Habbo, and got incorporated into Coke Studios/Coke Music, considering how popular they were.

I really miss Habbo, Coke Music, and Mobiles Disco, they kicked ass. It's just a shame that Habbo got overrun with children, or I'd still play it today, no doubt. May I also add, working with Sulake was incredibly fun, back in the day.

Pic related, it's a "scripted" room with scripted items of furniture in Habbo from back in 2003. To my knowledge, "S0nux" is "Sonic Mouse", who was incredibly popular in the scripting community at the time of the picture.

Wow, Ireland really beefed up in the Habbo world.

So having an absurdly cursory knowledge of Habbo, what kind of restrictions were placed on the scripting for objects? And what sort of objects could you apply scripts to, were they a set list or could you make your own?

In the advent of Second Life, some of the most fun I had was applying certain scripts like that of a motorbike to random objects I'd created, it's something I always wished MMO's gave you access to.

>what kind of restrictions were placed on the scripting for objects?
Scripting was always against the "Habbo Way", (rules), despite the fact that my job was to remove rule violators, I actually liked the scripting community, and I actually used to have a few scripted rooms myself, on alternate accounts from my company account/staff account. Scripting was piss easy, years ago, people could use artmoney to throw posters off of walls, turn their Habbos into "mutants", merge furniture into walls, give themselves staff badges, recolour their items, some people even found out how to buy rare items from the catalog, which caused everyone to collectively shit themselves, and a lot more harmful shit happened as well, such as the one that let people crash the client by filling it with automated users (Jeax was responsible for this, and he actually went to court for it)
>And what sort of objects could you apply scripts to, were they a set list or could you make your own?
People used to write their own scripts for literally EVERYTHING in game, it's actually still VERY possible to do a lot of stuff to my knowledge, such as throwing stuff off of walls, dropping furniture into the black part of the screen, making your character have a seizure and freak out, but I am unaware whether or not the developmental team fixed it or not. Last time I checked though, it worked 100% fine.

If you want to check out some stuff related to Habbo, one noteworthy thing to look up is the user "Finch-HIMself" who successfully social engineered a female moderator, and got access to the housekeeping on the US website. Despite what everyone thinks, the kid had no knowledge of "hacking", or anything of the sort, he was just incredibly good at manipulating people. Another dodgy bastard is "Myrax", from the English website, he sold out his hacker friends for cash.

Here's a scripted Moutain Dew machine, staff only trophy, and a blue elephant (recolour of a gold elephant which was never released)

What do they actually do??

Do they back up MMO clients or do they just record gameplay footage and player interviews?

>> No.1135151

Last MMO I played in the old style of things was Shadowbane, and I think that was before I played WoW. That shit had this massive character creation thing sorta like a tabletop RPG, and the game world was void of anything but a few monster spawning zones/dens/lairs and maybe a single big city. Players made guilds, bought buildings from the NPC city and built their own, sieging each other down. Dying caused you to drop your entire inventory, so going out into the world was somewhat scary -- people would be waiting around to PK you for anything you brought outside your guild's base, and if you never had anything good, they'd knock it down and you'd lose tons of money.

That sort of thing was actually fun back then, but now everyone's so proficient at ganking and there's such a skill gap between vets and newbies, it's not that great anymore. Some of the games that still implement that system you can't even hardly spawn in before someone 50 levels above you murders you for no other reason than they can.

Most older MMOs had a diary of some sort, some sort of central BBS or mail system and often map where you could put your own annotations. UO had it, EQ had it, AC had it, DAoC had it, M59 had it, SWG had it and almost all MUDs had it. How something so simple yet useful is absent from modern MMOs is mind boggling.

It's not used because the developers know that the gameplay they're producing isn't worthy of story, and couldn't create the necessary drama for a dramatic diary entry anyways because "muh respawn system"
Oh, and the corpse/diary items would disappear in 5 minutes after being dropped anyways (assuming they drop at all) invalidating months of personal record keeping.

To get most people to consistently use a diary, they'd need an in-game reason to keep one, like having a morale bar. And then some faggot realizes you can just spam one letter without spaces and get the same effect as actual writing.

What they need is some source of information that can't just be looked up on a wiki, a password for your guild hangout comes to mind or maybe the co-ordinates of some back-alley trading hub.

I once played a game with player crafted drugs and by trading them you were temporarily in a state of kill on sight with no karma penalty.

This created an actual community of only trading drugs in uncommon areas and having a few strongarms as lookouts; naturally the community also had people RP'ing neighbourhood watch, trying to find dealers and kill them. What happend was a constantly revolving system of co-ordinates, secret codewords and hiring of low-level players as a mule so they aren't recognized.

An actual in-game notekeeping system or annotation-friendly map would have been lovely at the time.

I played this on and off from the time I was like 10 or 11 til I was like 15.

I joined the Koguryo Royal Army, and back when I was that young it was still kind of fun to do that RP. I ran some events with a friend, too, which was fun. One thing that I remember was that we had to stand guard for some RP ceremony with the prince or Yuri or something, and they put us in this big map that disabled the afk snore. I was playing with a friend in the same room(by which I mean standing perfectly still and doing nothing), and after about 15 minutes of listening to the speech, we left the house to get food, ate it, came back, and the fucking ceremony was still going on.

I have mainly fond memories of Nexus though. I'd kill for a UOF/P99 style nostalgia server. I can't imagine it'd get enough of a playerbase to kick off though.

DiscworldMUD here. I can't say it's for everyone, but if you like text-based adventure games, it might be worth a try for you, because the quests in the game are more like the kind of puzzles you'd encounter in adventure games rather than "slay ten of this monster" or "bring me ten of this item".

I can't truthfully say that combat is my favorite thing about it, but a lot of the gameplay mechanics differ significantly from other MUDs - for instance, wizards memorize spells and only can fit a limited number of spells in their heads at once, like D&D wizards (which Disc wizards are partially based on in a satirical fashion).

If you're curious and want to check it out, you can find out more about it here : http://discworld.starturtle.net/lpc/

There's a "play now" link on the site that uses java, although most people use a MU* client such as MUSHClient, in which case you connect to discworld.starturtle.net on port 23.

The Discworld adventure games you can find as abandonware on Abandonia - I don't think they have Discworld Noir, but you can probably find it on TPB or other torrent sites.

If you decide to check out DiscworldMUD and decide you like it but need a little help finding your feet, I have a wizard there, Funderburk, and I try to pop on every now and then. I tend to have a 'binge and purge' approach, where I might be on a lot for a few days, and then take a break from it for a while.

All the guilds are pretty fun, although I wouldn't recommend the Assassins' Guild for a first-time play since PVP is mandatory for them and it will usually come sooner rather than later.

Not really a 90s game, but the most fun I ever had playing a game ever wast playing DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot) around 2001.

It was popular for a pre-WoW MMORPG, but now it's largely forgotten, other then a few people that still play. Frankly it should be seen as a masterpiece. The PvP/RvR system in it was ground breaking and the best end game I've ever experienced. If it was allowed to evolve instead of being killed off by WoW, it would have been glorious to see.

Kids these days will never experience the joy of playing a real MMORPG, that has minimal grinding and near perfect player vs player combat.

>Dat feeling playing a minstrel class and putting an player too sleep with a song from my flute and then using it to charm monsters which I set on their ass to chomp them too pieces.

>Sieges with hundreds of players and stealing precious relics from an opposing realm's keeps, climbing up the walls and stabbing defenders on the ramparts with my assassin.

I'd like it to be in a medieval or fantasy setting.
