I've been playing Wolf3D using ecwolf and i'm very surprised on how good it looks.
It's very comfortable to use a USB Joystick (Even though i had to use JoyToKey because the game seems to not recognize the controller).

I'm very curious, /vr/, because i was like almost 2 years old when this game came out and i never see any Ads about the game.
How bad it was received? I remeber a long time ago some documentary about videogames and how important and controversial this game was.

>> No.1116512

It wasn't received badly at all. The game basically invented the fps genre. When Doom came out, it was hailed as being a very worthy follow up to Wolf.

The only controversy was over violence, nobody really had a problem that Nazis were being killed, except Nintendo.

>> No.1116515

Nobody disliked Wolfenstein 3d. Its just that Doom is better in every single way.

Wolf3d gives me motion sickness though. Its that lack of bob.

>> No.1116536

PC gaming wasn't as prolific as it is now, so there were ads but only in gaming magazines.

I fucking thated the maze-like levels.

>> No.1116573

Such a great game. It was played fucking everywhere when it came out and everyone goddamn loved it.

Just got overshadowed by the mind-blowing leap Doom made over it and it was quickly pushed to the side.

OP here.
Interesting, i thought people like politics or the goverment were ape-shit about how this game was so violent.
Yeah, Doom is without a doubt the biggest step up. better graphics, better music, much better layout and variety.

>> No.1116860

I've always preferred Wolf3D's level design to Doom's. And I shouldn't, because Doom's is much better. But there's something about the levels being cube-tastic, insane mazes that hits my sweet spot.

Compare it to Ultima Underworld, a game that came out a few months before Wolfenstein 3D.

>> No.1116865

>>1116861
I have heard about the Ultima Underworld games
(I think i've seen those on the Spoony videos).
Never give it a chance since i never know the Ultima series existed until i discover the Gameboy games. Yeah, shame on me.

>> No.1116868

Someone needs to do Doom-style levels with Wolfenstein assets.

>> No.1116869

>>1116865
I wanted to try them but i'm not too much into RPG's. I know the Ultima series has been very important, though. I see some gameplay footage and it really shows how advanced PC gaming was.

>> No.1116884

Wolf3D is still a bunch of fun.

>> No.1117262

>>1116861
interesting thing is that Catacomb 3d and wolf3d were also attempts to make first person engines that ran much faster and efficient than ultima underworld or wing commander did with computers at the time.

>> No.1117378

Blake Stone was better than Wolfenstein in terms of game content, but it was released later when Doom was already around the corner so no one really played it.

>> No.1117491

>>1116861
Ultima Underworld may have had more advanced features, but Wolf3D and Doom's advantage was their incredible speed, in terms of both engine and gameplay. Wolf3D ran at 70FPS. You'd be hard-pressed to find modern games running at that speed.

I played through it in it's entirety along with Spear of Destiny and it's expansion packs the other day and I'd have to say this is one of the main problems.
Because there is no z axis in the levels, later game levels end up becoming stupid huge labyrinths that show little variation.
Aside from that it was enjoyable.
I mean, I found it to be less than challenging even on Death Incarnate but I played a fuck ton of Doom prior so that's to be expected.

id Software was all about the engines, not the games. They just threw them on the table and had other teams produce the actual content:

Wolf3D -> Blake Stone
DOOM -> Strife
Quake -> Hexen II

cannot say that any of us krauts had a problem with the game, why should we in the first place anyway?
'cause i don't think many real nazis played this game - they were very old when wolf3d came out....

Of course people played them, but not anywhere near to the extent that they played (and still play) Wolf3D, Doom and Quake.

no.
didn't think you was being literal.
you made a statement:
>no one played these games
i knew that was not 100% true.
you postest that statement anyway, therefore you we're sort of trolling.
so then i started trolling the troll that you are.
should i explain any further or can you just leave it here as it is, and get back to topic?

They didn't as much advertise it in the usual sense, as they let players spread the word by themselves, this is what is called "Viral Marketing" (which /v/ constantly conflates with "Guerilla Marketing"), they had already established fame with their Commander Keen games, so people were already curious about their upcoming game.

Of course, Doom came along, and blew it out of the water, but Wolf 3D remains important.

>>1116884
Oh yeah, it's just the right kind of Arcade actiongame I like.
They should have made an Arcade cabinet.

>>1118332
Damn, Strife was cool as fuck, I kind wish it had done better so they could have made a sequel. Then of course, they'd have gone for the Quake engine by then, and then they wouldn't have had all that wonderful and beautiful spritework. Strife seriously had beautiful sprites and textures, very smooth animations and everything. Setting was interesting too.
