>What game is this?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaeru_no_Tame_ni_Kane_wa_Naru

It's a game I consider a pure gem, and while it's not very unknown to japan it's still very unknown in the west. "Frog Bell Tolls" didn't get a translation patch until 2011 so I suspect a lot of you haven't played it (or maybe even finished it!). If you're a fan of the Zelda gameboy games you should give this a serious try since the Link's Awakening borrewed this games game engine.

>What is Retro Game of the Week?
It's a get together of people who wants to play and discuss certain retro games each week with other people. Each thursday a new thread will be created for a new game, and until the new thread we discuss our current game. Discussions can be everything to personal stuff to heavy game developement discussions.

>What kind of games get chosen?
As long as it's allowed to talk about at /vr/ it has a chance to get played at some point. Right now I will be in charge of choosing games in the first weeks. Later on I will make the community more and more involved the games we choose. Giving me game tips is encouraged!

>Emulators allowed?
Play on all you want. As long as it's the same game we're playing, you're good.

>Where can I get emulator though?
https://sites.google.com/site/vrgotw/home
Or visit #RGOTW at the Rizon IRC server. The channel title will provide emulators and game for Win and Mac.

Have fun!

PS.
Here's the game pre-patched for you lazy bums.

My memory might be off, but I think Intelligent System helped them work on it.

>why didn't they release it in the west?
Pretty sure it was released during the time Nintendo of Japan deemed the west to be too dumb for some kind of games. It could also just have been a gameboy thing. We missed out on a lot of good games.

Alright, time to vaguely discuss next week choice.

What I had in mind for next week was Sega Genesis, and I want to let you guys vote on the game that will be chosen. So what I plan to do is let you guys suggest a bunch of games, then I will look them through and choose three (the rest of them will be left on my suggestion list!).
What I'm looking for is
>Platformer
>Shmup
>Beat 'em Up
Try to give suggestions about must play games and gems.

A great lesser-known beat-em-up for the Genesis would be Mazin Saga. It's based on an old anime series that was only dubbed about three-fourths of the way through, so it wasn't really popular, and neither was the game, by extension.

FTFY
I like JRPGs personally, because while many Japanese gamers responded positively to Wizardry, most other WRPG series were poorly received and they were seeking something simpler and more accessible. So Yuji Horii and other game developers satisfied that market demand.

Other than specific genres that got shit on like JRPGs, most of NOA's bad decisions were because of paranoia at America's moral majority and assuming anything even slightly offensive - drugs, sex, excessively graphic violence, etc. - would cause a shitstorm.

pros -
-great graphics for GB game
-interesting use of animal transformations
-dungeons are well designed and fun to explore, especially the castle

cons -
-way too much unnecessary backtracking
-all power ups are completely necessary to advance
-battle system is dull and boring

This game really is quite interesting. It's not quite an RPG although it pretends to be, it's not an action adventure in the same way Zelda is, and the 2d bits are pure platforming.

It's definitely one of those games you play for the aesthetics and dialogue and not necessarily the gameplay (although I did love the platforming funnily enough). I'd consider it a GB equivalent to EarthBound in that sense.

Anways, great game. The final boss 'mini-game' had bitchin' music.

MUH DICK

>> No.1117353

I don't mean to be a dick but the thread could do without your running one-liner narration and screenshots. I realise it's a thing in the gauntlet threads and it makes sense there, but when everyone is playing the same game you're kinda spoiling it for them with all the posts and needlessly clogging up the thread. It's supposed to be like a book club, so how about just playing it and if you have something to discuss then make a post, and possible accompany it with a screenshot if appropriate to further illustrate your point?

I don't like this game's combat much personally. Perhaps it's that it feels so similar to LA that I expect Zelda-style combat. That said, I love how the whole frog business is playing out. So Mandola was the princess in disguise the entire time.

But if Mandola was actually helping you the entire time why the fuck did she take all your money so you couldn't fix the spring bell?

Well, if you think about it, you never could have made it to the end without the bad things she did to you. If she hadn't taken your money, you never would have gone to the goldmine to try to pay for the bell, and you never would have found the snake killer (the only sword capable of defeating Delarin)
Mandola obviously knew it was hidden there, and she did the things she did so you would grow strong enough to save the kingdom.
Not to mention she basically gave you awesome transforming powers

Ok so I had a think about this, and thought of an idea for a voting system.

At the start of the week, a selection of n (say 5) games from a variety of platforms is chosen randomly. Over the course of the week, participants vote for those games from some sort of voting page that has links to some info about them (for example, Mobygames URL).

At the end of the week, voting ends and the most voted-for game is the /vr/ Game of The Week. A new vote starts a the same time, so that by the end of the week we have a new game to play - it's a sort of rolling vote system.

Games can't be winners more than once, but can be nominated more than once.

Let me know what you guys think, any improvements, etc. and I'll look at putting together a demo/prototype.
