nah there are semi decent ones for snes and pc engine in active development.

the difference is that sgdk is more or less the unreal engine or unity for retro systems. it's got asset processing tools, music drivers, a high performance sprite engine, and it uses gcc. you don't even need to know how the hardware works in detail to make a finished game.

>> No.11122637

>>11122537
>there are semi decent ones for snes
SNES homebrew has been nothing but a shit show, what are you talking about? It's either fake Game Maker games being passed off as "SNES", or the worst garbage you've ever seen in you're life. The "best" one was the failed attempt to port Xeno Crisis to the SNES, but there were so many compromises made that there's no reason to ever play that version instead of the many other better versions, and that's despite it using a cheater chip several times more powerful than the entire SNES. SGDK turned the Mega Drive into the preferred homebrew console for a reason, it's because the hardware itself is very friendly for programmers. I do wish there were more homebrews for the PC Engine though.

I'm talking about pvsneslib and HuC (which I've used quite a bit myself). They're not as good as they could be, but they're semi decent and both have been used for finished games.
There's a sort of fundamental limitation to how well those processors can handle compiled C code though. Both SDKs compilers generate slow, bloated code and until a lot of work is put into that, assembly is the best way to go unless your game is pretty conservative.

Check out rex nobilis if you're inclined. It's probably the most interesting snes homebew in development right now. 100% 65816 asm, of course.

The rom is packed inside a GBC emulator for GBA called Goomba Color. You can use the emulator VBA to view the rom information to see for yourself. Naturally a GBC won't be able to play a GBA game with a GBC emulator inside. I first discovered this on a retrobit plug n play with wonky emulation, so I am not 100% sure if its snes or gba. This is one of the few games that really scratches that Tetris "one more try" itch for me. The objective is to match tiles on a 4 way sliding playfield. The same numbers connecting makes a combined total(2+2=4) with the goal being to reach 2048. It combines both that addictive line clearing autism of Puzzle de Pon or Bejewled and needing to pre plan multiple steps ahead since every move adds a new block and you lose if all spots are filled with no more possible combinations. I am assuming this is a homebrew port of something that has been around for a while on computers.

Also props to this little crappy device to introducing me to Zooming Secretaries (nes) and Broken Circle(gba).

What is failed about the SNES XenoCrisis port, aside from the cut down resolution and sampled music? Doesnt it have slightly better control, where you can roll and shoot at the same time? Also some SNES transparency effects and a voiced intro.

It goes against his thirdworld manchild nostalgia, so it's automatically bad. He posts this same shit in every homebrew thread, unprompted, just like you expect from fanboy troons like himself.

the snes port just puts a chip in the cart that is more powerful than the snes itself, and emulates the sega. it's lame as hell. goes against the spirit of homebrew. you can put a miyoo mini in a nes cart and emulate ps1 on it, kind of fucking stupid though.

porting the game to snes the honest way would be a ground up rebuild since they're too different. That's the reason for "Aladdin syndrome" or whatever they call it

Has anyone checked if the ROMs in the rereleases of the Shockman series can be extracted?
All of them have been translated, and the second game (the one that is a MegaMan clone) got a retranslation too.

Thanks for the rec, anon. I was aware of the NES and Sega versions of 2048 (the Sega has an especially good tune in it), but I wasn't aware of more versions. This is seriously awesome news, anon. I've known about the only localized TurboGrafx one since it launched on Wii VC and also finally got around to playing the Columbus Circle localized SNES one. Pretty good time. I reposted your request for this in /hbg/, since someone there probably can handle this project (unlike me).

>Didn't work on Genesis Plus GX (soind breaks)
Apparently, that's just a bug with the game itself, because if you skip a cutscene before it finishes, the music plays as normal. But besides this error, the controls should be customizable: it's Alex Kidd in Miracle World button configuration by default. Also, there's no pause function, which is stupid (Start just sends you back to the title screen, where you can thankfully select any level you've played so far).

Also, here's the GBA version (or rather, ONE GBA version I found) of Alice Sisters: https://files.catbox.moe/jlpap1.ZIP
This version has it's own problems, however. Despite fixing the control issues of the Genesis version (including now including a pause function), it doesn't let you even start the game unless you press (NOT hold) L at the language select screen before selecting a language. But its fun besides all that!

I tried that link on a different device, and it unironically did work for me. That said, I just tried it on this on, after using a different VPN location than I normally do, and Catbox wouldn't even load, so maybe that has something to do with it.
