The bump limit had apparently been reached (probably is 150 posts on this board), so the last thread wouldn't bump anymore no matter how many times you post in it afterwards. That essentially means the last thread is dead, even though it hasn't left the catalog yet, so we want to make sure that we get a new thread going while we can.

Just finished Super Metroid Verticality and it was fucking sick. The sprite and music edits were a little underdone but it nailed the gameplay. Even Subversion, my favorite Super Metroid hack, had filler backtracking and confusing areas but Verticality just keeps pushing you forward. But it didn't feel linear because there's lots of alternate paths, side content, and optional tricks. Wall jumping lets you shit all over some obstacles but not enough to make it too easy or boring and it just works really well

Is there a way to make a custom FONT.ROM for PC-98? I used yy-CHR to edit some of it but when I load it into Neko Project I don't see a change. Do individual games have their own formats? I don't know anything about PC-98, but it sounds like FONT.ROM is a system font. Maybe the game in question uses its own font instead? In that case, you'd have to edit the game itself.

Porting to the SNES is actually easier because the SNES has the same CPU as the NES (just very slightly upgraded), the same low resolution as the NES, and graphics are in a similar format. The Mega Drive would require a full port built from the ground-up. There may be the possibility that a general purpose NES emulator could be created for the Mega Drive which would more easily allow for NES ports, though. There are already emulators like that, but I don't think they are allowed to be used for port projects by others. It may also be harder to add enhancements that way, versus just building a new port in SGDK.

I agree in principal that the SNES ports of NES games are silly and needless, I just understand why they are being made. The PC Engine hardware would be easier for ports of NES games than the Mega Drive, but the SNES is really the easiest system for it, sadly, and that's simply a result of the SNES being an "upgraded" NES.

>> No.11124943

>>11124929
I'm not so sure there's much of an easiness difference. the PC Engine was also designed as a sort of upgraded nes and it's more straightforward than the SNES. especially on the audio side. since it's going to run the same code at 4x the speed, you could probably just emulate nes audio with the extra CPU time left over. it's just a matter of tracking how the channels are configured and playing the correct waveforms and envelopes.

The audio side is addressed, as the SNES ports of NES games simply use an SPC-700 NES audio emulator by Memblers which handles sound translation "automatically". Which, funnily enough, totally negates the idea of ever upgrading the audio. PC Engine is probably not significantly harder for NES ports than the SNES, but it is harder by some amount, and that is the sole reason these SNES ports are being made.
Hey, give it to them, it's not like anybody else is making SNES homebrews.

You don't need a 6 button mod to do this.
None of the Sonic hacks that implement a super-activation, super-cancel, flight-cancel, or special moves ever needed extra buttons because you already had three face buttons with identical functionality.

Whoever made that Alien Soldier 6-button mod happens to have made a lot of Castlevania improved controls mods, but not one for Bloodlines.

Just found out about some kinda romhacking.net stuff from the happenings thread (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXpuRIZzJog); don't know if this helps anyone but I've still got this semi-finished /hbg/ links rentry if it helps anyone with archiving things (was still working on the basic romhacks stuff from the bottom-up; but most of the homebrews were sorted).
After Anonfile got nuked, I put it on hold because of the time needed to sit down and clean it up properly, but with RHDN getting fucked over by some discord tranny drama bullshit (hopefully the links don't die); it's probably appropriate to post it again in case some Anon with time on their hands could find any use for it. If nobody does I'll try to get around to it again (I'll check the offsite archives to skim what I've missed posted ITT's), but I'm busy as fuck right now and just don't have immediate time to spare for like a month minimum because real life.

Running patchers from the command line is super easy. The tricky part is matching all those patches to the right roms. The 'Hacks' table from romhacking.sql in https://archive.org/details/romhacking.net-20240801 lists the correct rom and checksum for each patch but sadly instead of a nice column for each it's all lumped together in a nonstandard block of text marked 'rominfo'

Drama shit of course. Pity, I wanted to submit my project to that site in a few months when I eventually get it done.

>I was finally looking to wind things down at the end of last year. I wanted to provide the site database and file archive to the general public. At that time, an internal group suddenly emerged with an offer to help continue the site. I questioned their intentions, but I thought it could prove to be a more community friendly path forward. However, it turned out to be the opposite. We had a rocky phase 1, moving the downloads into their possession. When I went to startup phase 2, I discovered a most dishonest and hate filled group. I learned that I had been dehumanized for a very long time. My personal details had been given out. Secret deceitful plots had been made to cut me out, and drop a bomb like I am a target to destroy. My family has seen this and after discussion, we are immediately ceasing all related site operations. We are cutting ties to Discord and Twitter social media outlets, and will have no further contact with these individuals. Lines were crossed. I had hoped this community especially would have learned from what happened to Near. This behavior is not OK for handling disagreements, miscommunication, anger, or anything else.

The internet continues to slowly die.

Reminds me of the Linux community. There seems to be a correlation between computer/electronic related interests and trooning out. Maybe because it's such a magnet for mentally unstable dudes. Seeing romhacking.net die makes me really sad, though. Reminds me of when the Whirlpool died.

Seems conflicting with my skim of the shituation,
>NC (Nightcrawler?) is an early 00's oldschool guy, running an early 00's oldschool site; probably in his late 40's at the youngest at this point, considering the timeframe, might even be knocking on his late 60's oldest
>Stuck in his ways, what werks werks, never bothered to learn anything else because he hasn't needed to
>Has not budged on anything in years, regardless of the cost / benefit
>His site staff have a different opinion (since his refusal to budge is causing problems, like days-long site outages when he's not around to fix them), and try to get him to budge over to AWS (Amazon Webservice?) for cheaper hosting or something

>>>{This is where the cloudy he-said she-said shit starts, not sure from here on}

>Clear rift forms between oldschool NC and his nu-age admin team who are all in a shitcord together
>NC doesn't want to budge on things but puts a small amount of effort on his end to see if it helps the people in his admin team whining at him, but gets spooked off and doesn't go all the way - backend stays as it was before, leaving him confused, the people who wanted to help dissatisfied, and everybody frustrated
>Shit happens?
>This is possibly where he's doxxxed / blackmailed?
>NC puts his hands up and just doesn't want to deal with this shit no more
>also Near is involved on the anti-NC side somehow (IIRC Near was the foxdick farms tranny that is either anheroed or is faking it) (don't know, don't care, don't know why they're involved in this, all I know is that my gut feeling is shitcord gayops are afoot)
If anyone else has a more clarified PoV I'd be down to hear it; seems most likely like he was like Hiroyuki in that he was mostly hands-off, and Lowtax in that the site drastically changed in userbase / admin from what he personally wanted to use it like.

My main concern is honestly if all the links are going to stay up or not, and for how long.

> Do individual games have their own formats?
Could be.
There are 3 ways to display text on the PC-98:
1. Simpler way to do it is write to Character RAM (Sogna's Viper and Animahjong do this)
2. Read from Character ROM then display it as you would a sprite. It's more flexible as you can process the glyph to make it bold or with an outline. Most games use this method.
3. Have your custom font that's just 1bpp data. Usually only for ASCII characters, numbers or icons. So used with method 2 for Japanese characters. Seen in D.O./ZyX engine, Dragon Master Silk 2, Branmarker 2, Record of Lodoss War.

Gideon Zhi of Aeon Genesis (AGTP) posted a Twitter thread explaining his side of things.
https://twitter.com/GideonZhi/status/1819216091710959727
AGTP is prolific for making loads of fan translations over the years, with Cave Story being one of the most notable.

The short of it is that Nightcrawler, the lone owner and operator of RHDN, was too controlling over what is a community created content site and didn't take offers for help.

Romhacks.org meanwhile is a site maintained by the CDRomance guy; to distribute ROM patches rather than pre-patched ROMs as CDRomance is popular for.
RHDO however was never widely adopted and one of their moderators caused some real shit for them by actively trying to sabotage RHDN and broadcasting that they were doing it.
https://cdromance.org/news/romhacking-net-to-stop-hosting-romhacks-rhdn-drama/

Under the circumstances, I'm wondering if Romhacking.com will take things up.
Right now it's basically only Super Mario 64 hacks, but it has the innovative Parallel Launcher which makes it piss easy to launch a SM64 hack directly from your browser and play it in a highly compatible N64 emulator.
Either way RHDN is over and I'd like to see a properly managed site pick up the slack, whether that's RHDO or RHDC.

I guess I have to decompress it myself before editing but I have no idea where to start. There are other bitmaps using the .BFT and .PI formats that are not compressed but the font uses a custom one. Anyway, looking closely while running this batch, I noticed some of the files give an error : Could not detect BFNT header.

These are MIKOFT.BFT and ENDFT.BFT. Opening MIKOFT.BFT as a RAW image in IrfanView (1bpp, width = 16, height = 256, skip 32), here's what I get!

I'm assuming that this is still in relatively early development considering there's a bit of a lack of sound effects (they are pretty weak and subtle, are they placeholders?).

The spritework isn't mindblowing, but I'd call it adequate (it does look more GBA than SNES though), while I'd say what needs more work is the movement and physics, and some more work on animations, making them feel a bit more weighty.
I think the current overall graphics would look and feel much better if the animations were improved.

It does remind me of some old Amiga platformers (or for that matter some old DOS platformers), with the levels being very much constructed out of square tile graphics on a grid.
The game uses a lot more color than typical, which is impressive in a way, but compare to the graphical design you may see in many Capcom, Konami, Natsume, and Namco games for the SNES, where the backgrounds and environments can be lavishly detailed.

This whole building block approach is its own aesthetic, though there's ways to improve its appearance to make it look less artificial and "gamey" such as by creating some variants for each type of tile, which you can scatter here and there, and then making stuff like "edge" tiles, where for instance the left and right sides of a brick building there is given shading to make them look like they have rounded corners.

I don't think that's an appropriate comparison, considering Crazy Bus had VERY little work put into it at all. You may not love what you're seeing in that video (I'm certainly not blown away myself), but the author still put a lot of work into the sprites and making boss encounters and all.
If this was presented as a finished and complete game, then I would be decidedly less optimistic and tell the dev to get the fuck back to work, but it looks like it's maybe ~35% finished or so, thus I can't dismiss it as a whole unless he throws in the towel.

GameBanana and itch.io allow hacks. There are quite a few Paper Mario hacks on itch.io since their Discord mods had enough of a brain to use the site for their "Hack Jams". If someone wanted to set up GitHub Pages to host their hack on a simple webpage, they could also do that instead of just having the source in the GitHub with the patches only available in the Discord. Those types refuse to upload the patches into the source tree or the "Releases" section.
All of these sites from itch.io to RHDO will still censor things like RHDN did with their preferred politics, but itch.io and GameBanana will allow nude mods while RHDO won't. I can expect a spicy debate over whether RHDO will host the Fire Emblem Engage translation.

Yeah, they seem to use the system font, so you were right trying to change it in the beginning. Maybe try again changing the font in Neko Project 2 : I had to restart the emulator for the change to be effective. Drew some horizontal lines on the latin caps to really see the font was changed.

From common sense, the jumper is placed at 3.3V so it is operating at 3.3V.

If you want to be sure, look at which pin is the power supplied in the flash chip, then measure it with a multimeter while running.

But really, if you flash it and read the data back and it is the same, you flashed it right.

Also, in the future when you do not know, you should try the lowest option and if it succeed, you stop. You cannot damage anything that way.

Is it worth hosting all of the major archives of mods, or would there be any tangible advantage to narrow the focus to hosting stuff which is just rare, forgotten, or which other sites refuse to host for political or "moral" reasons?
Or would it not make much difference and it's just better if the site works as a full utility?

I know preciously little about running a site or hosting an archive, obviously.
It might be advantageous to do some kind of Sadpanda approach where the servers are hosted somewhere where authorities don't give a fuck about piracy/"piracy", to hold off Nintendo's goons, and the site doesn't delisted because someone uploaded their Cunnyvania romhack.

The real problem is Cloudflare. That is basically a service a lot of website providers use for hosting sites. If your content doesn't agree with their guidelines, good luck in that case.

Not related at all, and no, not a /pol/ dude here, but this is why InfoWars got cancelled.

I think you would have to host that kind of website in the Netherlands or some country that doesn't care for piracy.

Most likely it would devulge into torrents which isn't ideal but probably the only way to keep out Nintendo fuckbag lawyers.

There's other places besides Cloudflare, and you can avoid a lot of the casual normalfag scrutiny by plain hiding access and visibility of any kind of controversial content behind a login and account option. Gelbooru and other sites do that for loli and shota content and stuff, and it's not 100% ideal, but it provides a layer of protection.

I would almost have suggested asking if that Null guy would be willing to provide DDOS protection, since he developed his own after Cloudflare dropped him, but I think that this would not benefit either him or this hypothetical archive, that'd create another attack vector against him, which he probably doesn't want, and it would also create an association motivating people to fuck with the archive who otherwise would not necessarily care much, if at all.
I think he said that creating and operating your own DDOS protection is a lot easier than people think, so if that ends up becoming a real concern at some point, maybe we would just have to figure that out.

If you are hosting your own server, the cost of the server and the network connection and all the HDD space to handle the data plus regularly replacing the HDD's. If not, the cost of renting the server and bandwidth and HDD space. On top of that, site design, standardizing user submissions and having people check the submissions to make sure some bad actor isn't using the site to upload viruses, some form of forums as well as admins to handle the forums, and if you want to actually replace RHDN you'll want a searchable database for everything with lots of different filters and criteria to search by.
Oh, and you'll need to oversee all of it yourself to ensure your admins don't end up getting overrun by terminally-online wanna-be tyrants who want to force their own agenda on everyone else. Otherwise, they will.

If you look at a lot of smaller game dev teams in old days, usually most of the guys on there had ideas in addition to what they were bringing to their table with their real skillset, like the guy who does the sound and music might do at least partial playtesting and give input on the gameplay, or the guy who does the engine realizes "Ahah, I can make the engine do THIS, the guys should try putting that in the game!"

All mod/hack sites that don’t allow nude tiddies should just die, kek. I don’t really care what happens to any of them, anymore, when these types are the ones imploding and sabotaging themselves, anyway. PokeCommunity, SMWCentral, Sonic Retro, RHDN, RHDO; the list goes on, and they attract the most annoying, moronic users.
You can see how they cause the most problems, make dumb arguments and turn the entire site into a “SFW” cesspool that worships Dicksword. They scare off potential hackers with their annoying ways, barely helping anyone that asks and can’t organize anything they’re doing properly. After the noobs get bored of trying to reason with the pretentious userbase, they move on to things like making PC mods since those sites have articulated better tutorials and an easier entry level. All the modding & hacking sites with nude tiddies like GameBanana, NexusMods, LoversLab and itch.io, despite the other levels of censoring things, continue to generate more active users compared to most of these moronic, anti-tiddie hacking sites that remain filled with whiny troglodytes.

You don't represent 'the community', you represent a vocal minority. A vocal minority that never shuts the fuck up. And is quick to silence/ban anyone that disagrees with you. There's no point in even trying to engage with you people.

I've seen the same bullshit play out in other fanbases, time and time again. A group of highly vocal faggots ruins it for everyone else and eventually that fanbase fractures. At which point usually two or more sites emerge from the remains, til two those eventually fade into obscurity too.

It works fine for me. I used the hdi image from the Neo Kobe PC-98 collection on archive.org and drag and dropped 東方封魔.録 in the correct folder.

Still, I usually don't use this technique and prefer deleting then copy the file to the disk image instead of updating it. I've had some weird behaviors updating files, like they were truncated yet the programs (anexdiet or NDC) didn't raise an error.

What you can try is to use a fresh disk image of the game, delete the data file then copy your modified data file.

Also be wary that the repacking script takes all the files in the th02 folder, so be careful that there aren't any temporary files in this folder.

Make sure that the first 32 bytes are exactly the values in pic-related after editing. The thing is a 16x16 1bpp character is also 32 bytes, so the garbled pixels before the 0 you can see in YYCHR is in fact the header of the image file.

After extracting and repacking a couple of times I noticed I keep getting a file called TOUHOU.BMP outside of the th02 and th02_source files. When I opened it on a viewer it is the graphic that's rendered on the intro which might be why it crashes. When I insert it into the th02_src folder nothing changes, and when I erase it the repacker throws an error that it can't read it from the .dat. Maybe it keeps crashing because the graphic is duplicated? When I reach Mima in-game it also crashes because Mima's sprite seems to be duplicated which slows down the game

Ah. I now have the same hi-score glitch as you with the repacked data when I update the English disk image.

TOUHOU.DAT is only this intro image, same format as BFT images, and isn't an archive per se.
The tools indeed assume that there will be a TOUHOU.BMP in the root folder, that may be shared by all 5 games. So no need to put in in th02 or th02_src, or even update TOUHOU.DAT in your disk image if you don't change this BMP.

Well, I'll have to investigate some more.

>> No.11144123

That's what I mean by economically viable.
Economically viable from the stance of someone who has a wage and is contributing that wage almost in full. Think SA before the forums became paid to join. It hasn't been viable to do this for literally over a decade at this point.
By the ways, RHDN also hosts homebrew, and there's literally nothing legally wrong with romhacking(in MOST countries,) provided that they don't redistribute the copyrighted content(the ROM.) This means that while Luna patches are annoying, they are a way to make RHDN completely and utterly legal.
I had to unfortunately specify /most/ countries, because as it turns out, it is illegal in Japan. I think that's actually the only country romhacking is completely and utterly illegal in though, unless some other slightly respectable country wants to chime in.

Romhacking may be legal (except for in Japan, but that wasn't really unexpected either), but I was more thinking you could probably not run any kind of ads to help with hosting because then you might be approaching the territory of making money on the properties of the games in question.

Sorry, I didn't have time to check yet. I suppose there's something wrong with either the image encoder or the archive packer.
The archives are pretty annoying to compare as the repacked files are in a different order, but I'll try to have a look tomorrow.

Why did ROM-hacking more or less fade away? I remember a small period in the late 2000s, early 2010s where it seemed to be all the rage to ROM-hack.
I barely even knew RHDN was closing down most of its operations until recently.

Because it's dying, reverse engineering in general is dying

>Modern games are basically only made on a handful of engines now that have already been documented to hell and back
>The old guard has gotten well, old. And bitter and cynical about it all
>Newcomers find it impossible to learn decades old hacking methods and simply don't bother
>Consequently those oldfags who run the sites simply close down because they aren't getting any attention anymore
>RHDN was dying for years hardly any big submissions got published there and were posted elsewhere first if you were lucky you might have seen a translation for a game you were waiting or an extremely notable hack, otherwise it basically just nothing for months at a time even

>> No.11146592

There's a bunch of reverse engineering of old console games to make them run natively on modern machines though, basically porting games without having the source code.

>Modern games are basically only made on a handful of engines
Yeah, and..? What of the older games, many of which have tools that make it STUPID easy to mod a lot of them?
>The community is slowly aging out and nothing is replacing it
This bit I recognize, but I'm confused on WHY. It's not like the old guard learned some ancient magicks or some shit that is exclusive to them, and many of them have even taken on pupils before.
Furthermore, ROM-hacking has shit loads of guides and documentation. Sure, some of them are difficult to find, but that's more because Google's algorithm has turned to shit than the fault of the community itself. Hell, internet rot has strangely not affected the ROM-hacking hobby as much as it has other hobbies.
The literal only reason I haven't picked it up myself is because I've been busy. Even then, even with my problems with intelligence and general lack of knowledge, I still understand most of everything that's been presented to me.
>RHDN was dying for ages
I used "barely" for a reason. I had known that RHDN was already suffering YEARS ago, so I had somewhat expected it to go under, though I kinda thought it happened in 2018.

So where are all of the new Pokemon romhacks? I'm not asking for big ones mind you, I'm asking for shit as simple as Pokemon Shiny Gold, or Topaz
Gen 3 Pokemon is literally one of the easiest to ROM hack. So easy, in fact, that 10 year old me made some progress on it with absolutely zero experience. I still have the computer with all of the tools. I might even have the half-complete maps I dicked around with. And yet, there's NOTHING today.

>there's literally nothing legally wrong with romhacking

In the USA, Micro Star v. FormGen Inc. ruled that game mods are derivative works and can infringe copyright even if they don't distribute any copyrighted material from the base game. Whether non-commercial ROM hacking would hold as fair use is an open question, but I doubt any company is going to try and litigate it. However, the laws not being enforced does not mean that ROM hacking is legal; take the example of video game decompilations, which Nintendo allows to stay up but both Nicalis and Take Two have taken legal action against for their respective titles.

Most other jurisdictions do not have open-ended "fair use" copyright exceptions like the USA does. The EU, in particular, has never had a case about video game modding specifically go to higher courts; game cheating is the closest we've got.

The uniqueness of Japan is not in ROM hacking; it's that Japanese courts, contrary to most other countries, have ruled that the copyright of a video game extends to its save data, and thus distribution of modified save data is itself copyright infringement (plus there's laws to prevent cheating in video games on the books these days which may also apply).

There are also rightsholders who explicitly allow ROM hacking; in particular, Sega's releases of their Mega Drive games on Steam have explicit Steam Workshop integration, which allow non-commercial ROM hacking by virtue of uploading modified ROMs to the platform.

ROM hacking is not legal. However, ROM hacking is cool, and most companies have no interest in going after niche, non-commercial fan communities.

>Reverse engineering
Both Take Two and Nicalis have both broken the law. Reverse engineering, which is what the decomp projects are, is legal in the United States under fair use(and I am aware that the EU allows reverse engineering but I'm not sure under which circumstances.)
Additionally, the infamous EULAs which dictate that you've waived your right to fair use? Yeah, not only are they not legally binding in most countries, but also they're made in legalese, which means that they're very hard to understand, and therefore are null and void under US law since they need to be written in plain, concise English.
Unfortunately, lawsuits are expensive regardless if it's a guaranteed victory or not, so a cease and desist is usually more than enough to get people to back off.
>Micro Star v. FormGen Inc.
Firstly, Micro Star didn't even make the levels. FormGen actually encouraged people to make levels and shared them. Micro Star literally fucking stole them off of some bulletin board and did NOT get permission from the creators. That alone constitutes a crime, though I suspect this information came out later after Microstar was disbanded.
Secondly, the original ruling was that Microstar violated copyright laws because they used copyrighted material to market and package the game. If they had not done this, it might've actually gone in Microstar's favor.
The second ruling dictates that the story presented by Microstar's stolen levels is a sequel, which suggests that you can literally just avoid this by not making your ROM hack a sequel to any official game.

>The uniqueness of Japan is
their incredibly strict copyright system that may or may not be corrupt.
By the ways, ROM hacking falls under "cheating" in their legal system, not "modified save data" like you're claiming.

>Most companies
Nintendo does CONSTANTLY though(especially when it's covering a game they're about to release,) which makes it even more interesting that they don't go after ROM hacks.

>> No.11148140

Also, having looked into the Micro Star case because I had never heard of it before, I came back to the 1992 ruling on the Game Genie. There's been debate that Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. v. Nintendo of America, Inc. may actually protect non-commercial ROM-hacks as fair use.
Interesting stuff. I'm not knowledgeable enough to make my own determinations, but it's interesting to see the Game Genie remain relevant in our culture 30 years later.
