The 3 handle design looks kinda weird but I don't really think it was that bad, it made sense since you're not supposed to hold the three handles at the same time or something.

It gave options to the developers, wheter you wanted to do a 2D platformer like Kirby, or a 3D platformer like Mario. The fact that little games used the d-pad is mostly the developer's fault, not the controller's...

Done differently. If I remember correctly, the buttons on the 7800 stick each sends signals down two lines. Both send a signal to the 2600's button line, so you can play 2600 games with them. They also send signals down their own dedicated lines for individual detection.

Using a Genesis controller only the B button produces anything on the Atari (or anything that most games would typically look for.)

If you plugged the 7800 stick on a Genesis, it would do some odd things of its own. The only one I recall offhand was hitting both buttons simultaneously would fire the super weapon and pause the game. Hitting them individually wouldn't produce either result.

Not as bad, but I never cared much for this controller either. The joystick's feel was just, weird.

Yes, but at the sacrifice of separating all of the directional buttons of the DPAD into sectional padding. These buttons are especially susceptible to getting stuck underneath the casing, and transferring to different points of the DPAD were painful.

>distinct buttons
True.

>Almost as hard to kill as a NES controller.
This is bullshit, and I did a test to prove it. I placed one NES controller and one PSX controller under the legs of my couch, and left them there for 3 months. During this time, me and my friends sat on this couch, I had jumped on it multiple times, and had even slept on this couch for a few days. When it hit month three, I removed the controllers. The PSX controller had a large indent in it, chipped casing, stuck joystick, and smashed buttons stuck under the casing. I plugged it in, and it didn't work, no surprise. The NES controller on the other hand had a single white scrape mark, and the controller worked perfectly fine on my console too.

>i would be riveted to be provided proof that you have used this hock of shit long enough to determine if it is a sturdy controller or not.

I'm not that guy, but there is substantial dirt in the crevices of that controller, and it looks like at least the triangle button has worn paint. I have PS1 controllers from the mid-late 90s that still work like champs, and the only thing that ever broke over time was the screw eyes in the handles (which has actually happened in four of my six PS1/2 pads), which just makes a little bit of the seam open up if you pull on it intentionally. A little glue would fix it (One of them is completely transparent, so I can see exactly what's not staying in place.), but since it doesn't affect the functionality of the controllers I haven't bothered to take them apart. These controllers have all been crammed in boxes, moved around the country a few times, schlepped around in a backpack that often sat in my car in both southern summer and Cleveland winter for days at a time, and not least of all were chew toys for several large breed dogs on more than one occasion. The plastic has bite-marks, but not a single button or stick malfunctions.

For instance, on ALL of my PS controllers, the D-pad is hard and ill-responsive, the L2,R2 buttons have all cracked and become less responsive (aside from my regular PS which is useless because I only have PS2, and the d-pad is uber shit). OH, and the analogue sticks, particularly the left one, always seems to pull to the right after a week.

I tried it as a kid and hated it, it was way too big for my hands. Now it feels pretty good, very 'filling' of the hands. I also like how the buttons are clustered together under your thumb. You can actually hit all four buttons easily, which is something I always felt was a flaw with the SNES/PS/eternal standard that was the four button square pattern.

I got the Xbox on release (or that Christmas rather).

And that controller fit my hands perfectly. I was 12 at the time, and a pretty weedy 12 year old at that.
