I remember when the domain name bubble exploded in the early 2000s but corporations were so ass-hard to have ".com" everything that they literally started calling products ".com"s, until everything became "e"s (electronic) then became "i"s (copying Apple's branding), then became "v"s (virtual). I specifically never got to enjoy a Game.com growing up because the mere name alone made it sound like retardedly junky ass even for a Tiger handheld.

I miss gmenu2x. It's not as well suited to Retroarch though, previous emulator handhelds running on Ingenic processors mostly used standalone emulators and an inconsistent trend of selecting your ROM through gmenu2x or the emulator's own menu.
Everything on the budget side is using Rockchip or Allwinner now, which is probably for the better.

Apparently the fucking RG Nano uses Gmenu2x though so go figure.

The GBA had a very short run from 2001 to 2005.
The DS launched in 2004 with the DS Lite in 2006, and the 3DS was a 2011 launch.

GBA basically had 3-4 years tops whilst the DS kept going for 7 years whilst being GBA backwards compatible.
There's far more DS systems on supply than GBA as a result.

>> No.11116993

Nintendo was originally scared shitless of the PSP's announcement and claimed they were doing some "triple threat" approach with the GameCube, GBA, and NDS because they had no faith in the DS whatsofuckingever.
And then when it was retardedly popular they killed the GBA and told third parties to work on porting all current GBA projects to the DS instead. Which was fine for most since they could get away with the DS having physical GBA hardware to not need to change much to work. But then projects like the GBA version of Mega Man Anniversary Collection were cancelled after months of failing to port GBC related projects to the DS.

Yeah, but good luck finding a DS in good condition without a horribly scratched/discolored shell, yellowed screens or missing shit. And the DS is a pain in the ass when it comes to reshelling or rescreening, and you can't get better modded screens, just transfer them from another DS.

If it's a smaller display and integer scaling is possible, I generally prefer sharp pixels so long as the image isn't too small.
If it is, I'll do a shader that's designed for non-integer scaling to keep the look of sharp pixels with as little shimmering as possible, and then add a grid overlay to help with the look.

The shader that Nintendo provides for NSO GBA is surprisingly good. I'm also surprised that I can emulate it full speed in Ryujinx but that's besides the point.
I tend to not play GBA games on larger displays anyway, largest would be a Switch in handheld mode, and that's for the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection more than anything (which has a shit super eagle /2xSAL style filter).

They were just going to run five or six GameBoy and GameBoy Color Mega Man games like both Mega Man Xtremes, basically using roms and using the GBA's native ability to run GB and GBC games. Because they didn't have the source code for most of the titles anymore (as it was common practice to delete a game's source code once it went gold so you had the storage space to make a new game), but when they were stonewalled by Capcom's immediate bendover and acceptance of Nintendo telling them to cancel all GBA projects and bring them to the Nintendo DS, and the NDS didn't have the internal hardware to just play GB and GBC games, they had to abandon trying to make the GB and GBC roms run on the NDS after a couple of months of attempts.
Also can I just say I fucking hated how the console versions of these anniversary collection games for Pac-man and Megaman and Sonic and such having exclusive unique content on each console was total bullshit. I can't remember which game, but like the GameCube version got the full anime with subs and dubs, the Xbox version got excessive amounts of exclusive alpha and beta early design concept artwork, animations, in-depth discussion of how the game evolved into its final form... and then the PS2 version got ten terrible no-name remixes of some tracks in a shitty in-game media player in the its bonus menu. Only for Capcom to shitcan cancel the whole fucking thing days before the PAY TO PLAY Chapter 0 demo of it in the same sense as Dead Rising 2's paid demo shit, and specifically blamed the fans for not being involved enough?
Thousands of Mega Man fans bought a 3DS in 2011 and waited a year for the eShop to fucking open just to pay and play the MML3 demo only for Capcom to say, "fuck you, you didn't get 3.5 million people invested."
"3.5 million" was a goal for literally every release Capcom did a the time, and even if a game sold three million copies and made $50,000,000 in profit Capcom was like, "NOPE, NOT THE 3.5. FUCK YOU ALL, GAME DONE."

If they cared more about colorizing all 5 of the OG GameBoy Megaman games, they should have gotten and reserved several or so warehouses in check for at not only business transactions and personal notes, but also source code disks and carts. I know it's expensive... but I think these foldable smartphones that are coming out over the years are pretty decent options for emulation, maybe with a telescopic controller. I know a tablet isn't too different in theory, but one fun thing about these foldables is that when using their internal display, the aspect ratio is pretty much 4:3 in all of them, or at least close to 4:3 I guess, it works.

I obviously wouldn't get an expensive foldable if this is my only use for it, but if you were going to get one anyways... then yes, this is awesome in a lot of ways, a 6' 4:3 screen on a handheld is nice.

Newb here. I get told to buy Steam Deck by a lot of people, but I just don't get it. The thing is huge and heavy, how do you even play it lying down? And no, don't give me cope answers how Deck is literally perfect and I'm bad for not liking it. The thing weighs more than Sega Nomad, I can't imagine how this hunk of shit has """perfect ergonomics""". And what's the battery life anyway, I heard it's 4 hours when used heavily?
I want PS2/GC and ideally Switch, but I don't care much for X360 onward. I just feel far better with a smaller, lighter handheld that isn't a brick. Like, you know, every handheld except for Deck. Plus, in my cunt it's still relatively expensive, base version is near 400 bucks.
What's worse, every time I read Deck owner posts, they're just acting like attention seeking faggots non stop, telling how GBC is LITERALLY PERFECT on their Deck. I guess buying a Deck means you never shut the fuck up about owning a Deck, and also take every opportunity to shit on other devices to shill Deck. I just don't know if Deck is actually that good or these people are just clowns.

I think Steam could as well release some gayming phone that weighs like a brick at this point, like those 80s phones, and people will still shill it like 2nd coming of Jesus and post pictures of how they play Pokemon Red on it. It's like those super heavy bulky gaming laptops that defeat the purpose of having laptops.

I totally agree. I generally love the Vita and it's UI, but it has worse ergonomics than the PSP revisions. The back of that thing is wack - the handle divots on the ends make no sense for holding. I like the clicky buttons, but don't like their size at all. I'd rather hold a PSP any day.

That's basically one of three handhelds.
>ANBERNIC RG ARC-S
>ANBERNIC RG353PS
>ANBERNIC RG353VS

They are all more or less the same console with a VGA screen, but with a different form factor (and button layout with no analogue sticks for the RG ARC).
They're all around the $70-80 mark on Anbernic's own site.

The S models are cheaper than the non-S models because they lack Android support, have 1GB memory instead of 2GB, and lack a touch screen.
If those things matter to you, add $20 to the price. The shells for the S/Non-S models also different and you may prefer the aesthetics of one over the other.

The RG353M with an aluminium shell is also available but way more expensive.

CFW is popular for these devices, but be warned that if you want to install Rocknix CFW, this requires you to wipe the Android installation from the supported models (there's a good chance you wouldn't use Android anyway).
https://rocknix.org/devices/anbernic/rg353pmvvs/
https://rocknix.org/devices/anbernic/rgarc/
This is apparently due to a change in the Linux bootloader or something, rather than a conscious decision by the Rocknix maintainers.

Because the buttons only matter when you actually mash them. If you're playing something turn-based, the crystal clear large screen is much more important than inconvenient buttons, especially for PS1 games. That said, the PSP is much more portable, durable and indeed generally comfier than the Vita, it just has a shitty screen.

4U. If you tried playing a fighting game you'd realize that Vita's clicky buttons and D-pad have far better actuation time than PSP's and that makes it easier for the player to react quickly. And the "classic" PlayStation-style D-pad (which the Vita doesn't use) fucking sucks, it's damn near impossible to quickly press a diagonal. Vita is so good when it comes to controls that I even use it as a controller for my PS3 because the official Sony ones suck.
>Also, it’s crazy how PSP games look blurry as shit on anything besides the native screen.

Those cost too much. Might as well get a used Steam Deck and be able to emulate PS3 and play PC games at that point. No reason to gimp myself with Android on a 250 EUR device. See, this is the problem. If you want actual good PS2 emulation, PC handhelds become more cost-effective because they can also do lots of other stuff. ARM should have better price-to-performance ratio because it doesn't suffer from the same duopoly licensing hell that X86 does, yet that isn't the case. And this is the proof that the state of PS2 emulation on Android is nowhere near good, especially when compared to its contemporary: the GameCube. Cheaper ARM chips should be able to run PS2 better.

I just went with the cheapest model, the one with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Its a good enough device for me, in some games like Yakuza 1, GTA3, Persona 4 or Silent Hill 2/3 on AetherSX2 I had zero issues running them at 2.5x internal resolution with widescreen hacks. Other games like Drakengard 1 were basically unplayable since it mostly hit 60fps during gameplay but tanks the moment any UI elements appear, and Gran Turismo 3 and 4 have too many issues with slow down for my liking.

The XL is prone to the shell peeling. The difference in durability is immediately obvious with the smaller model having a more premium feel. The swappable faceplates are a plus too. I find both models pretty uncomfortable with the dpad being in the wrong place but the larger one makes this problem worse.
Basically the DSi XL is the most premium feeling DS model and the one comfiest to use if you have big hands as well as the one with the biggest screens but the 3DS XL is just the 3DS model with the largest screens but feels cheaper and is worse to hold than the smaller models.

>Triggers are decent if you don't hold it like a retard

>why did you return?
The d-pad being so fucking low bothered me more than I was hoping it would. I was buying it mainly for shmups, Game Gear, NGPC, etc and ultimately found it's just not comfortable to use with these d-pad focused games. The d-pad itself is also very tough to press with very little pivot, basically the polar opposite of the one on the RG Arc. It's not a floating d-pad at all, and if anything feels more like a Xbox Series d-pad than a Saturn one. Honestly, that still could've been good if it was placed in the correct position, but it wasn't. Granted, it's still in the wrong location on the Unicorn as well, but it sits a bit higher and sounds like it's a proper SEGA style floating d-pad, so I'm holding out hope that I'll be able to cope. The speakers firing downward is also really gay, but I would've been able to reluctantly cope with that if the d-pad situation was sorted.
>Any issues with light bleed? is the form factor good for tate mode and SNES?
I had pretty noticeable light bleed along the top, yeah. And yes, the screen is great for those.
>Does saturn run decently?
In Yabashiro it does, yes. I didn't even attempt Beetle Saturn kek. My issue is that Saturn aspect ratio is generally pretty wide, and the resulting picture on this display is a bit small for my shitty old man eyes. You can correct to 4:3 ofc if that's your preference and it'll give you a bigger image, but that's still only 3.5". Which may be perfectly fine for you tbf.

>>11129264
>why did you return?
i did not :)
>Any issues with light bleed?
There's very very faint bleed along the bottom edge, I have to set the screen to pitch black and practically look above the bezel to spot it. It doesn't bother me.
>is the form factor good for tate mode
I guess it's good? Half of the point of a 1:1 ratio is that you don't need to rotate the console for vert games.
I did temptatively hold the console on the right side. My left thumb lands squarely on the right joystick and I have a lot of control on it on this position. The B and Y buttons are very easy to hit. A and X take a bit of a concerned effort to hit or a looser grip.
>and SNES?
Yeah, it's pretty good.
If your grip is lowered to have greater control over the D-Pad, you may miss on L2 depending on your hand size, but SNES games makes no use of it.
>Does saturn run decently?
https://litter.catbox.moe/5ncw6i.mp4 related, Panzer runs at 60FPS on high performance mode.
You can see me dropping to regular performance mode halfway at which point you see a few drops here and there. On normal mode it drops to 30 when there's anything moving onscreen.
I also tried Nights off camera and I get 60FPS on normal mode
All of this was with the yaba core on retroarch; It might perform better on the standalone emulator but i'm not fucking paying some faggot who has the gall to shove wish ads on my face AND not even allow me to list a directory on the free version.
As an aside, I have no fucking clue what ross was smoking. It's a given he tested panzer dragoon on normal mode to shill the cube, but he had to actively make nights run worse somehow for the video.
>other issues
The screen had play and would lift from the right side. I figure my failed attempts at setting the screen protector managed to lift it from its groove since it had no anchorings other than being a tight fit. It has a nice flat plastic surface behind, on which I put a few drops of standard contact glue, and it hasn't moved since.

I'm pretty sure the buttons are exactly the same between the 2. The major differences are the MiniLED screen, the smaller battery, and the obvious extra pocketability of the Mini. I just wish it wasn't so overpriced.

>It might perform better on the standalone emulator but i'm not fucking paying some faggot who has the gall to shove wish ads on my face AND not even allow me to list a directory on the free version.
Kek yeah it's pretty gay. Thankfully it's easy to just search "yabasanshiro 2 pro apk" or something and pirate the paid version. I can't remember which sites I've downloaded it from in the past, but I think someone here recommended "pdalife.com".
>As an aside, I have no fucking clue what ross was smoking
He's always blatantly underselling or overselling performance, and is wildly inconsistent on how he gauges the same chip between videos. No idea what his defect is in this regard.

If unused, I find that it loses like 1~2% overnight, probably less when I don't forget to turn the wifi off.
One thing I noticed is that this charges really fucking fast, like less than an hour to recover that 70% on my 67W xiaomi phone charger, and doesn't get particularly hot while doing so. I'd trust it to charge unattended on a slower charger, but still wouldn't leave it plugged overnight as is my standard practice with chinkhelds.

I have a deck, it is heavy on the wrists when lying down, i just don't play as long as I normally would or play a lot sitting with it on my lap, or switching positions. This doesn't depend on your hand size, wrists aren't a muscle.
Battery is 3-4 hours when used heavily means when playing a recent AAA game or something terribly unoptimized, for snes/ps1 I can get 7-8 hours, so I'm guessing PS2/GC would be in the middle, around 5-6 hours. I have only tried them briefly but in my experience the deck has no issues at all with PS2/GC they run fine.

The main (and perhaps only?) advantage of the deck is that you can also use it to play Steam games (duh), literally no one buys it as a emulation only machine, you'd have to be a complete fucking retard. If you can get only one device that can do both I say it's worth it and I don't regret it, because I don't really play that much, but if I played a ton I'd prefer a second lighter emulation handheld, or fuck I'd get original hardware if I had the space or the money.
As far as "the community" goes, that part is optional as always. I think I've told like only two people IRL that I have a deck, I never take it outside either.

Nothing at its price point comes close to that display. Decent controls, proper stacked triggers, best sleep mode on a budget linux held.
The drawbacks are primarily the PSP performance (which is sadly spotty despite the screen being almost a perfect fit to the original) and the CFW options. Crossmix is nice but at the end of the day is souped up stock, which at least was serviceable to begin with. Knulli is a bitch to set up and portmaster there still sucks dick. And MinUI is MinUI. It's cool you can use it, I guess (maybe you have a MM+ and really want to go widescreen on some games on the same SD)? But you miss out on DC, PSP and a bunch of other emus.
There are other options now if you don't need the 16:9 ratio like the M19, R36S, XU 10 or Xu Mini (if you like micros). If you spend a bit more, you could pick up your RGB powkiddy of choice or, may God forgive me for saying this, an RG40XXH.

I honestly think I'm gonna cut my losses on the AnberSP and go back to my CFW'd 3DS. It's a damn shame, cause the SP would've been my dream handheld if not for the battery stuff. Something to replace my retired childhood SP. I haven't even run into any problems, but I'm the slightly paranoid type, so I couldn't ever be at ease charging it unsupervised, much less traveling in a plane and stuff like I'd want to. At least it was easy to transfer my .srm's over. I'll probably recycle the battery and keep the shell as a nice decoration or something. Hopefully one day someone makes a decent replacement...

Weird game, arbitrary platforms and that one big jump at the start you can easily make with Tails hover blocked with an invisible wall just so you have to drop from the top, freaking western devs and their alien logic.

Plays fine, its d-pad is great. Biggest shortcomings of the 28xx are how common light bleed can be (hard to notice on color, but still annoying), the unconventional shoulder buttons and the shallow Function button button being dead center at the top that kinda doesn't register sometimes (relevant to muOS as a combo to control brightness + volume buttons), start and select under the d-pad instead of the H's layout, the d-pad/face buttons being too small for some (not me, love them), lack of wifi (takes one specific dongle and a plugin on muOS, drivers for multiple dongles on Knulli) and its N64 and DC capabilities are vastly overblown (but I knew it going in).

I like the 28xx a lot, knowing the H sticks are nearly useless in your place I'd go with it or the XU Mini M if feedback is positive and it gets adopted by Rocknix or some other equally reputable project.

Its genuinely bizarre how much he got away with. He brought up the possibility of the screens having lightbleed, even though the only device with a 1:1 screen with lightbleed was the RG Cube. He completely gave Anbernig the benefit of doubt by assuming that they came up with the device for the Cube at the same time, and that Max Zhou didn't just blatantly rip the A1 Unicorn. And he still shilled the RG40XX H in the video despite being more expensive/worse than the TrimUI Smart Pro, even though Anbernig has better 4" screen devices with much more power at that, like the RG405V.

I personally have a Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance (AGB) x2, both a back and frontlit SP, PSP 2k, Vita 1k and Vita 2k, DS Lite, 3DS, N3DS XL, a funny little AAA powered Game Boy clone my Mom surprised me with on my birthday a year back that's a famicolone and a pair of Dingoo A320's. I was of your personal mindset until I saw that Portmaster was a thing and that the Trimu Smart Pro could run that and Dreamcast/N64/PS1 no issues. So I grabbed one on sale, and a Trimui Smart because it was $28, fits in my pocket without a case or problems and if it gets stolen it's not as bad as losing my original GBA or 3DS/Vita. I do not see the point in buying a new handheld every time one launches, but getting one or two for a specific purpose makes some sense now.

People have been collecting handhelds since the Game Boy anon, that's basically what inspired my Famiclone collection

Having one main device is fine but sometimes it's fun that's not really the reason we collect them, especially for people who are into doing custom mods like reshell, custom buttons, etc.

It’s solid, literally every negative that people are gonna point out is immediately obvious to anybody from just looking at it, which is likely the exact same way that you decided that you want the small horizontal form factor version including joysticks. It’s built nicely, the OS is perfectly fine, and as you obviously know already, it’s small and pocket-focused

>> No.11132237

i don't know what the advertised life is but i would guess it's in the 4-5 hr range? i play 20-30 min on the train to-and-from work if i can get a seat and get a full week

all i play is the super metroid practice rom on it, maaaybe apotris if i wanna play even if i don't get a seat

always max brightness but volume at 0 since there's no 3.5mm jack and i haven't even bothered to test the bluetooth as i heard it's shit; even if it wasn't i'm listening to music off my phone or media player

>> No.11132239

I want something pocketable/compact, mostly for gba and ds but never played ps1 and psp so would probably like to try those as well. Don't want to spend over 100-150€. I already have a hacked switch, but it's big and running retroarch is annoying. I want something to carry, pick up and play with ease. What do I get? I like the Miyoo mini +, but it's weak for anything beyond ps1 (+ I had a gameboy pocket back in the day and it was cramped for longer sessions) , and Trimui Smart Pro, but that looks like it might be a bit big for a pocket. Any suggestions? There so much of this shit and I don't want collecting chinkshit handhelds to become my hobby, just getting one to suit my needs.

i highly doubt the frontend has that much impact (and i'm under the impression you already have it) but i run minui on mine

5hrs might be a stretch, i'm confident in 3-4hrs though as i did get a full 5-day week in where i played both ways on my commute

an hour or two is crazy, i can 100% super metroid in just a little over 2hrs and i did so with no issues recently as i was blown away by how good the buttons/dpad were and wanted to see how much time i could shave off (i don't speedrun seriously so i'm not running a timer or anything, just went off feel and checking the ingame timer at the end)

i didn't finish the run and feel the need to charge it, i actually just stuck it back into my bag and charged it a day or two later

I'm using stock actually, which could be the problem. I'll probably swap to minui on mine tomorrow and see if that helps. I have played maybe six hours of games total since getting my Smart Last week and charged it either two or three times from red flashing LED levels of low battery.

>> No.11132305

>>11132287
also doubt this has any impact but mine's a black one i purchased a month or two ago, but to my knowledge there's been no hardware revisions of the smart (aside from different shell colorways) and the only potential difference is in the firmware version which would be negated by going with minui anyway

in contrast to the smart pro that actually did have a hardware revision with things like the buttons and speakers very early on if i'm not mistaken, though those things wouldn't halve the battery life either

Yeah, looking at the readme now and it seems simple enough. That said it's 2AM and I'm not fully awake so I'll copy files/nuke a card with Rufus to Fat32/get Minui running tomorrow when I'm hopefully more awake and aware. Thanks for the input, Anon!

YouTube told me the RG35XX-H would struggle with stuff like wave race 64 and banjo kazooie but mine does N64 perfectly out of the box (I think I googled a bad super smash bros rom though, like 70% of polygons are missing), is the better than expected performance just because of a 5-month newer OS than any of the youtube ones or something? Do you actually get real performance benefits from a special OS or is it just for like different icons and function shortcuts?

>> No.11132531

>>11132498
It uses a really old video plugin for performance's sake, you can immediately notice the wrong lighting on SM64 or OoT, that's probably why your Smash is fucked. muOS had a performance lead back when stock was 32bit, no idea now, but stock sucks to use regardless.
