What are some retro games that are fun to explore and have good aesthetics? I love exploring the maps on games such as Zelda and Pokemon, however, I've played all the titles in these series too many times

dump maps please

It's weird to see a 2D game that feels huge like Zelda, then think how small it would feel if you were standing in the map and could look around in 3D. There's some Minecraft maps that are recreations of the old 2D Zeldas or Pokemon games and it always feels really small even though it's usually a 1:1 recreation.

Revelations: The Demon Slayer might be up your alley OP

It's sorta like Pokemon, but with demons instead of Pokemon. http://www.ign.com/games/revelations-the-demon-slayer-141870/gbc-12193

To be fair, you're talking about pixelated graphics from a time when pixelated graphics were pretty much as good as they were gonna get and comparing them to 3d polygonal graphics from when those were first starting to get common in games. It's not exactly a fair comparison.

I'd say OP has it covered with Zelda and Pokémon, two series that have awesome maps to explore and discover.

Many RPGs have cool maps too, like the Final Fantasy games. However, the world map does take a little away from the sense of exploration while adding to the sense of scale. Super Mario RPG has an interesting map with a few hidden places as well.

StarTropics had a neat map, but it's pretty restrictive and you have to go into those dungeons to get from one place to another.

I also think of the N64 3D adventure games. Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini, all had huge worlds to mess around in. Of course, the seamless world in Jak & Daxter was a lot of fun, but that's not before 1999...

If you're into the seamless worlds, you can't go wrong with Metroid in the end. Super Metroid's world was designed from the ground up for you to explore obsessively. EarthBound also has a great seamless world.

There is a program called OGMO for making tilemaps. http://www.ogmoeditor.com/.. It exports the information into xml. You just need a tileset.

It's actually a side series Shin Megami Tensei game, if you can believe it. I don't know until I was older but it made perfect sense. Play if you like Smt and gameboy RPGs

I will never understand why Nintendo was so lazy with this area.
They could have easily did it up proper but they had to be lazy and made it look ugly.

I really really really love good ol' 2D maps.

Some I really loved:

>FF4
>Overworld
>Underworld
>Moon

>FF5
>Butz' world
>Galuf's world
>Both worlds fused
>Plus sbumarine exploration

>FF6
>World of Balance
>World of Ruin

I just really fucking love JRPGs where you get a new world map at some point due to story events.
