11113973 No.11113973 [Reply] [Original]

Let's talk about the fun machine.
I'm currently playing Banjo-Kazooie: The Jiggies of Time on my console via a flashcart and it's pretty good, was wondering what other romhacks should I try, already have Mario Kart Amped Up (waiting for the new update that might add 3D models for the racers) and Smash Remix, maybe some randomizers as long as they're console compatible.
I have played some Mario 64 romhacks (currently Sapphire is my favorite) and some for Goldeneye.

Been tempted to check out Duke Nukem 64, Hexen, and Quake after reading the other console ports are inferior. I know the music is missing but they do look a bit nicer on the N64 imo. Surprising as it usually seems to get inferior ports. Also need to check out the latest Smash Remix at some point

When I was 8 years old, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter gave me headaches and made me feel dizzy. This was strange because I used to play a lot of Starfox 64 and Goldeneye without any issues.

Turok had something about it that made me feel physically ill.

As an ESL learner, my father enrolled me in an English course during that summer. A few weeks later, I received Turok 2: Seeds of Evil as a birthday gift, and playing it felt… unique. I experienced the same side effects as with Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, but there was an additional eerie element: the phrase “Beware: Oblivion is at hand.”

That sentence haunted me when I was alone.

Would being forgotten be worse than dying? If I no longer breathe; no longer experience life, but there’s no record of my existence, who, how, or what could even confirm that I ever lived?

Will death be when I lose my breath and my heart stops beating... or when time itself has forgotten me? And if I am remembered: Will I live or will I be consumed by whoever at that moment is experiencing what I believe to be "living"? Am I living or just existing?

Few games have fucked my head like Turok 2. I don't know if it was because of my age or because I was learning the language at that time, I have no idea.

I'd be wary of those if I were you. Someone on N64brew ordered one and the seller tried hitting him with extra fees (one for 1 cent and another for $45). This was after it had already "shipped" (the seller claimed there was a problem with the order and it needed "reshipment"). Also, the carts are missing the button on the back and who knows what else. The price is really suspicious.

No. It automatically writes the save data to the SD card during gameplay. There's even a flashing indicator light. Way more seamless than the x7 which doesn't fully save until you boot into the menu again. Still pretty expensive, though ($124 + shipping from a proper seller like Phenom Mod).

If S-video is the way to go, then I'd like to get high-end cables. I just got the Retrotink very recently, and so far I've only tested it with PS2. Using the AV cables that came with the PS2, the retrotink made it look decent. Then I got cheap component cables, and that was a big improvement. Then I got Retrovision's shielded component cables, and now the image looks great! So I've seen for myself the difference that good cables can make. Can anyone recommend me a good high-quality shielded S-video cable that ships to Canada? N64 is definitely the next system I want to try with the Retrotink.

It was a good design when you consider that analog sticks were not yet a commonly accepted feature of game controllers. The N64 controller had an analog stick in case fans responded well to it, and a D-Pad in case they didn't, and developers were free to design their games around one or the other. Sony spent 5th gen redesigning their controller to add features that Nintendo came up with like analogue sticks and rumble.

Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Doom 64. Doom 64 is a classic corridor shooter and the others are mission based, with good multiplayer for the day. These games reward creative ways of solving their missions and are at theur best when things go wrong and you have to improvise. Doom 64 is not a port of Doom 1 or 2, its like Doom 3.

The World is not Enough and Turok 2 are the next level. TWINE is another devs take on the Goldeneye formula, and it came out well. Theres 4 Turok games and a few others that use their engine on n64 and Turok 2 is the best by a good amount.

The other Turok games are the next level. These games are more about exploration, item collection and boss battles. As I said Turok 2 is best. Turok 1 is fun too, but has terrible line of soght and fog. Rage wars is a multiplayer expansion and it ok fun. Three is just more of the same, but not bad. Armorines is one of the worst of the Turok type games, but it isn’t that bad. South Park is the worst Turok clone.

Forsaken 64 is a descent clone. Its a niche market, but if you like 8 directional shooters this ones for you.

The PC ports are mostly fine but inferior to the pc originals. Quake 1 and 2, Hexen, Rainbow Six are all good. The Duke 3d port uses polygonal models which is interesting, but I actually prefer the Saturn version as a console port.

Shadows of the Empires has a first person canera option. Its Auto aim. Kind of a fun, very early 3d platforming/third/first person shooter hybrid.

Daikatana is a steaming pile of shit.

Quake 2 isn't a port, it's more like an expansion. It's entirely exclusive levels.
Duke Nukem 3D doesn't use polygonal enemies except for the end boss.

I doubt you played half of what you're talking about

I prefer Mystical Ninja 2, but most people seem to have fond memories of the previous game. Is it that good?

2nd one is a better game. First one is fun to explore the huge 3D world but gameplay is otherwise poor.

Fucked up that 4MB of shit RAM is going for 40-50 bucks.
I ended up just buying a whole other console with the expansion pak already inside for about $25.

Honestly, it's an improvement over the original release just because the sidekicks aren't used in the game. There are a lot of further heavy alterations done to the game to make it play on the N64, though. Just look up the intro cutscenes for the original and the N64 port to get a glimpse.

2nd plays like a bad SNES game (bad is a harsh word, but it's your typical "3d game in a 2d plane" game of the era)
1st one is great

I wouldn't say its better than Great Adventure/Mystical Ninja 2 but it is still a good time, I think its more remembered because Great Adventure wasn't so common to see (I by luck managed to rent that game back then).
