I only started watching this from the atlantis challenge episode, and I already fucking love it. It has the perfect blend of japanese game culture with retro game culture. And it's amazing how much crosses borders. He plays games much like my friends and I do with older games.

Would you say "retro" is an essential part of the show? Would the format work with modern games?

So I watched the shiaku version of Wings of Madoola and once again 4chan blows things out of proportion because it's not bad at all. Translation's a bit still, but satisfactory and the narrator only flaw is that he's a little to dramatic and energetic.

There was a big worry at the time of release, since this was the show's only official presence in the West (outside of a DS game nobody bought), that the 'bad' aspects of it could potentially turn away people who would've otherwise become fans of the show.

Looking back, I think we're thankful it got enough viewers to warrant a DVD release, but spiteful about what a rush-job the pre-DVD episode cuts were and how that impacted the potential size of the fanbase.

Arino sucks so hard that there's plenty of modern games that would give him a challenge. Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Donkey Kong Country Returns could be a great watch.

My memory isn't serving me so well, when the first GCCX game came out, had the idea of devs doing faux retro games left and right begun yet? Because I don't recall a lot of fami-rpg clones and such before that point, maybe that game pioneered a lot of it in the mass market?

Crazy amazing. I was so impressed I couldn't prononces anything except "arigato" and bowing like mad. Even looking his eyes was hard. Not to mention Abe. The others ADs were very cool also, like Black Kirby and the last female AD whose name I keep on forgetting. Very cute smile and laugh. I did, but it didn't seem to get much buzz for our first full episode translation, so I didn't either bother throwing it on the poll. After that, some members of the SA team got free right about when I got jammed up with work (right after I started Karnov), and Full Speed's name was floated as a potential project, so... The more translated and released the better, right? No need to squabble over a potential next episode when you're too busy to finishing your current one. I really like that episode, so I'm just glad that other people can enjoy now too.

He has staff members (ADs) who can help him in specific spots if he gets stuck for a really long time. They usually film challenges from about 10 AM up until around midnight. If it's a long game that he has some chance of beating eventually they can extend the challenge to another day. About 1 out of 3 times a game just hopelessly destroys him and they declare the challenge a failure after the 14 or so hours. They usually have an AD take over at that point to show the ending.

It's a Korean variety show that features a tight knit cast of comedians and celebrities that compete each week in all sorts of really fun challenges, the usual one being that they have to run up and tear a tag off of another player's back. The start of the series basically amounted to locking them in an abandoned building and letting them loose, and a ton of the humor comes from them playing off of each other and forming all sorts of alliances and back stabbing at every opportunity. Later episodes have all sorts of cool and complex but easy to understand challenges and they regularly get all sorts of big celebrities to participate. What really sells the show and what's a big part of the appeal is that it's extremely well edited, they use a lot of licensed music and the show takes pains to keep the viewers guessing about some of the information that the players know. I know that tastes vary but I doubt you'll dislike it if you like GCCX, but that's me.

Yeah SA always insists on ruining source recordings...they take x264 and force it to recode into an AVI. They could just be taking the unaltered raws and inserting softsubs into the .MKV container file, swapping the .MP4 container for a Matroska. Simple.

Why they chose to use the WORST raw on all of Perfect Dark I'll never know. The Iwate raw is garbage.

Yup they had an x264 in .mp4 at 30 fps. All they needed to do was swap the container to .MKV and add the soft subs directly into the file. No loss of resolution, no change in video size.
