Do you like dungeon/roguelike game?

Love 'em. The one you posted a pic of, Torneko, is easily my favorite JRPG roguelike. I also like Castle of the Winds, even if it is casual level difficulty - sometimes I feel like actually beating a roguelike.

Some of the MUDs out there scratch the same itch as roguelikes, especially the ones that make extensive use of ASCII.

Like them, sure.

But I have no fucking idea how to play them properly (Shiren DS).

i only ever play pokeymans mystery dungeons, but dats not retro
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokémon_Mystery_Dungeon

wanted to play chocobo dungeon for PSX but the bad reviews drove me away. the battle engine was like retarded "half-realtime"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocobo_no_Fushigina_Dungeon#Games

then there's diablo.

as more "real" rouguelikes, z-angband and steamband, but i never really got into them or beat them.

The only thing I find bothersome about them is that they introduce genre confusion. I've always known Wizardry/M&M and such games as "dungeon crawlers" while roguelikes, Diablo and such were simply "roguelikes". Since I'm a big fan of the former it makes it much harder to look for new games of that style.

Screw you, Chocobo Dungeon 2 on the PS1 was amazing.

Have you played the one on the N64?

You say that as if they aren't almost exactly the same game, with the most significant differences being aesthetic. Shiren has a Glorious Nippon theme, and Torneko has a Dragon Quest theme.

Azure Dreams is one of my favorite games. I know it's "babby's first roguelike", but seeing as it WAS my first roguelike, I still have a fondness for it.

Not quite, Shiren is much harder and they improved upon the mechanics from Torneko considerably.

I'd even go so far as to say Shiren is a masterpiece. You should try out that one DS version with extra content.

It's sad that it often gets overlooked, despite being one of the best games on the snes, and arguably the best rpg on the system. Especially considering that it's been completely translated for a long time now.

Has anyone gotten the N64 Shiren to save correctly on any emulator? Every time I save and return to the main menu, I get a message basically saying both save slots have been erased.

>> No.1103521

Shiren, DooMRL and IVAN are the only roguelikes I've ever beat. And I do count DooMRL because I beat the angel of 100 mode.

I'm actually just starting Shiren on the DS. Only played Roguelikes here and there but never really got into them. I really love the survival part where if you don't eat you most likely will die. Never beaten a roguelike before and only got to floor 15 so I got a long way to go. Any advice for someone new to roguelikes?

Don't equip things you haven't identified yet. If you're in a dark hallway you can throw things like weeds or rotten riceballs to check if there is an enemy in the darkness ahead. Can't really say more without spoiling the fun of discovering it yourself.
The people in the towns will also give you different advice every time you die and restart, so keep talking to them.

Here's a tip. Go to the tavern and grab a riceball, put it it into storage, solve one of Fay's problems, then get another riceball. This way you can have an almost endless supply of 'em.

Upgrade your weapons at the blacksmith, then store 'em to use in later runs. Clever use of items is what will ensure your survival.

You should watch some japanese playghtroughs, they have plenty of nice tricks, you could learn a thing or two.

I beat the last boss guy of Shiren with one of those staves that turn enemies into decoys of you, not only did he take care of every enemy on the level, he was almost dead himself.

Keep your food in pots whenever possible, they prevent traps from spoiling it.

Learn how to burglarize dungeon shops. Actually paying cash should be considered a last resort. There are many ways to steal; some are much safer than others.

Learn and remember what each enemy type does. There are very few generic meatbag enemies in Shiren games; almost all of them have some kind of special ability. Some will kill you (anything with a ranged attack must be treated with utmost respect, especially when it appears in combination with other enemies) some will mess up your status or your items, and some can be milked for resources (e.g. the guys who turn items into food) or otherwise exploited (e.g. the ants who dig new tunnels).

Some entire levels, based on the mix of enemies found in them, are essentially boobytraps and should not be lingered on. The forest level with the skeleton mages, reapers, and soldiers who turn into ghosts is an early example. If an offscreen mage or reaper gets possessed by a ghost and levels up (watch the messages), FIND THE EXIT IMMEDIATELY. Later on there are levels chock full of level-draining and equipment-rusting enemies; if you attempt to clean them out you will most likely come out weaker than you came in. Better to ignore the items (those levels are late in the game, you should already have plenty of stuff) and just dash for the exit.

Yeah, staves in general are the most useful items in the game, they saved my ass an uncountable amount of times.

Also, getting that melding jar from Gaibara on the second town is a must. Those things can make the best items in the game.
