Is there really no other reason to get one of these besides Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and a bunch of Shoot em ups? I'm really into collecting for Japanese Saturn and there seems to be a lot of overlap between people who collect obsessively Saturn and PC Engine for some reason? I went for a couple beers at a local Saturn collectors house and when saw his PC Engine I told him I was interested to play Rondo of Blood and he basically said that was the only reason he had a PC Engine along with a bunch of Shmups.

What a stupid question, just look at that compact form factor. With one of these babies you could store an entire retro console collection in a Japanese apartment.

Adventure Island is fine

Tons of great games don't believe the memes. If your bud said that then he's an idiot.
Just a few
Splatterhouse
Military madness
Silent debuggers (console's 1st fps?)

It has a large library of CD RPG's, unfortunately most were never ported so you have to know Japanese.

My PC Engine is mostly for RPGs, SRPGs, action RPGs, and character-raising simulations

Its got a handfull of platformers, not as many as other consoles but they are very high quality, stuff like JJ and Jeff.
Its got a couple of good beat em ups, probably a bit of a waste if you don't like shooters.
It got a fair amount of nonsense like board games and quiz games too.

It's got a lot of great arcade ports, but assuming you can just emulate Arcade versions, the main appeal is shmups and Bonk. But if you do like shmups, the lineup is very solid

Ys Series, Valis series, some nice fighting games and arcade ports. They are very similar though imho the TurboGrafx-CD is actually way more interesting, mainly because many of its games are actually exclusive and not shared with PS1. The shmups themselves are also better imo

Forgot to mention some of the beat 'em ups, it has a very cool port of Double Dragon II, Kaze Kiri Ninja Action, Mad Stalker, and several others

There are ports on the PS1, Saturn and probably best of all, Sharp X68000 that are basically arcade perfect. It's still the best home port when the game was relevant though, the Sharp ver dropped in 94.

Great YouTuber for this is Retro Core, he does a series where he compares all ports of older games, nothing extravagant, just back to back comparisons over gameplay footage. 511 videos on the subject.

I bought one a few months ago with a flash card. I have to say the library is a little disappointing without the CD addon. I really enjoyed the Bonk games, Neutopia 1&2 and Devil's Crush pinball though

He's a fucking retard, the PC Engine has an excellent library of games outside of Rondo and shooters. Ninja Spirit, Alien Crush/Devil's Crush, New Adventure Island, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Legend of Hero Tonma, Son Son II, Valis I - IV, Legendary Axe, Cadash, Exile, Dragon's Curse, Dynastic Hero, Ys I-III, Dungeon Explorer I & II, all great games that aren't shooters.

Lots of good non-shooter games for PCE. Parasol Stars, Mizubaku Daiboken, Dynastic Hero, Kiki Kaikai, Ninja Spirit, Legend of Hero Tonma, Beball, Splatterhouse, Devil/Alien Crash, Adventure Island, Marchen Maze, Bomberman, Bonk, Bloody Wolf, Gekisha Boy, Valkyrie no Densetsu, Legendary Axe, Cadash, Jackie Chan, Ys, Kaze Kiri. Those are off the top of my head. Tons of RPG’s but most are filtered by virtue of not being able to read Jap, myself included. This “Saturn collector” sounds like a bit of a retard.

It's impossible to choose a model. You have this console that you only get if you have autism. But just to troll, there are like 5 different models to choose from. This is a hell of Nec's creation.

Holy fuck I didn't expect it to be this large. I'm just finally getting around to backup up games and this crazy. I'm probably just going to just download the rest by hand later since wget will go through the whole list if I move the folder around. My poor nvme 1TB... I just need to move these over to my external and internal HDDs so I can delete these off of the nvme.

i have the complete retail library on my everdrive
even without the (godtier) cd library you still have a STACKED collection of around 330 hucards

not EVERY game is a 10\10
but there are some killer titles that never got rereleased on other systems
if you liked the nes\snes\genesis era
and didn't have a tg16 growing up its like another timecapsule library from that exact era
with the upside of tons of games that you likely havent played

recs:
Märchen Maze
new zealand story
liquid kids
Fushigi no Yume no Alice
new adventure island
parasol fuckin stars
strip fighter
wonder boy
mega twins
Valkyrie no Densetsu
